In the “It Seems Like They Don’t Like Each Other” department, there’s a blog battle brewing between Young H of Potholes In My Blog (“Why Popular Bloggers Are Bad For Hip-Hop”) and targeted members of the New Music Cartel, who I’m not even sure if they know they’re “involved” at this point. If you’re too lazy to read it all, Ivan summed it all up with “Blog Thugs-No-Harmony” and provided his .02 as well.
Honestly, I’ve never been much for speaking publicly about how I find another site’s content to be crap. Generally, I think Sandra Rose has to be one of the dumbest, most hateful broads I’ve seen in operation. I figured out her angle (I think she despises Black men), decided I didn’t like it and stopped the RSS feed. Didn’t have any use for her brand of blogging. Same sh#t for disgruntled, entitled types who used to write for print* (i.e. used to be popular) but couldn’t make the transition online, minus the few hundred readers who stroke their nuts egos for them daily. For most people, Bol is an easy target but I like the guy’s material most days. My rule of thumb is simple — don’t like it, don’t read it. By directing hits to the sites you dislike, you’re helping them in the long run.
Like most, I attempt to keep track of as many different outlets as I can, but rap sites generally fall last on my list (sneakers & sports first, stank you very much), as there’s a lot of regurgitation going on. In the big fish, little fish scheme, I can click on almost any site and know what’s going to be @ the very top before I enter, just by checking what eskay posted recently. No shots, but simple facts because eskay & co. will always be King Crab in this bucket. And that’s not to say we’re immune because we do our fair share of aggregating popular content as well.
At the same time, we’ve turned down countless offers to host projects where we didn’t know the artist or their material, had to tell start-up emcees “we’ll listen but we can’t guarantee a post. Keep sending though.” and things of that nature. And dear Lord, I don’t know why the hell Bad Boy still floods my inbox with PR and requests, knowing I can’t very much stand Puffy. Speaking for myself, I honestly won’t post it if I don’t actually like or find it interesting, unless it’s content that I feel like readers will find entertaining, that being the only sacrifice we’ve ever made.
What I can’t figure out is how bloggers keep up with each other? Barely finding enough time in the online day to keep a handle on my inbox is a tremendous task by itself. How these guys stockpile ammo on what they deem to be missteps is beyond me. Monitor them on Twitter & Facebook? Is there a filing system in place and then you pick a day to unleash? Is there an observed waiting period? How does it work?
Over a year ago, I stumbled across a quote by William Faulkner that said “Don’t bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.” Once I read that, my whole approach to how we operate changed. There is no competition with other outlets, at least in my eyes. It’s all about how you choose to represent your brand and this culture. Entertaining and engaging the visitors. Finding what’s liked and dedicating words and energy to it. I don’t know how much success we’ve experienced as a result, but the approach has proven to be much more personally satisfying.
In the end, I treat the net like TV. I expect a certain news slant when I view Fox News. I get my funnies watching Nick @ Nite. I flip to A&E when I want to watch a Criminal Minds marathon. The point being, I know what to expect before I get to each station. The point? You don’t like it, change the channel or, in the online case, click the red X in the corner. There’s plenty of other content on this worldwide web.
Edit — Just spoke with Noz. No ill will moving forward because @ the end of the day, I think we ultimately all have the same goal(s), that being to better the culture. Earlier references removed out of respect and inaccuracy.

Roper – nice shots sir.
Digs – Authors may not, but journalists do trade barbs. Still, it all seems wasteful to me.
Authors don’t beef with each other. Terry McMillan has no beef with John Grisham, so why should bloggers have beef with one another? I hate biters too, but if the content is good, other people will love it other than oneself. As long as the people feel it, that’s all that matters.
Yet another reason why TSS Is Major.
Ahh respect man thanks
Why does Sandra Rose seem like a disgruntled middle-aged woman who doesn’t have a sense of humor in her entire body? In all honestly, there’s a reason why I migrated to TSS from AHH, Hip-HopDX (I still go there because their news and interviews are quite interesting) and 2DopeBoyz (Respect to Mek and Shake and the rest at the house, but I couldn’t stand their comment section). Yall can be considered a professional or popular blog, but yall still keep that personal feeling in each one of your posts. From LC’s nightcap and several Blu posts, to the Cooler, to the fact that you even post in your own comments section a lot, TSS does something I believe a lot of these blogsites don’t: Connect with the readers.
Same sh#t for disgruntled, entitled types who used to write for print (i.e. used to be popular) but couldn’t make the transition online, minus the few hundred readers who stroke their nuts egos for them daily

Click the link for that section. it ain’t hard to find and I ain’t shy about it either lol.
Good read GotBoogie,
Ive been coming to this site now for 3 yrs strong and I know it’s the integrity of the different journalist here that keep me coming back. And even though I don’t always agree w/ the post or artist that’s promoted, I have a great appreciation for authenticity and I can attest to this site being true to their convictions even though it could have been WAY more profitable to do otherwise.
@ Word
I believe that was at noz & ol softmoney
sandra rose is on some fuckery.
bitch goes around calling everyone and anyone gay at the drop of a hat, but have you seen this broad? she look like she eats vagina muffins for breakfast….
anyhow…tss is my favourite actual “blog”. 2db and nahright aren’t really blogs when you compare the writing there to the writing here.
keep it up tss fam.
TSS does something I believe a lot of these blogsites don’t: Connect with the readers.
====
That’s all I care about, because I’m a reader too.
Props on that Faulkner quote. It may just save a few lives.
Back to music!
And I honestly don’t intend to say we’re better than anyone. Make that clear. I’m just all for using your platform wisely.
NMC is good, but TSS is the best
Blogs have to go beyond music to stay relevant now; like Gotty said engaging visitors with unique content or presenting it in a unique way is key. Ever since I started using Twitter I don’t even need to go to a particular site for music, mainly because the artists that I follow post links to their work themselves.
ps: Nahright is dope, but those fucking non-sequitur comments are fucking annoying!!! How hard is it just to comment on topic? Sheeeeeeiit….
blogger royal rumble @ sxsw ’11
blog beef… the only thing lamer than rap beef
gotty w/ the reminder of why we fucks with TSS.
When did TSS start? like early 00′s right? My earliest memories of the site was like gotty taking pictures of ashtrays…
It’s not just hip-hop blogs, the politicos are even worse. In fact I think much of the shots taken at each other online stems from tv news media shows where the entire point is to put worldview point A vs. worldview point B and have them see who can take the best 15 second jabs at each other.
Luckily we hip-hop bloggers have a topic to cover with plenty of ludicriousity on which to get our snark on.
ps: Nahright is dope, but those fucking non-sequitur comments are fucking annoying!!! How hard is it just to comment on topic?
============================================================
In that room, extremely hard.
When I want to discuss the actual topic with out having to duck shots or look over my shoulder, I come home.
Still Major.
Enjoyed the post
So who’s gonna be the first blogger to get killed in the internet wars?
I remember I found out about TSS through their slept on albums of 09. After I copped some of those albums and decided I should start reading, but not comment. After a while, I started commenting till the point where my ninja Gotty referenced me in one of the posts (The chuck D one) and TC gave me a shout out (in the battlefield that was the K.Flay article). The regulars who come to this site are hilarous (Teef, Bigga, Amp, too many to count), angry at the world (Yah), very informative (BC), and will NEVER miss a cooler post (One Eye Deer and Nelo). This site is major, yet homey and for that, I respect yall fresh, from the end of 09 to ___.
I’m on fire with these long ass posts today lol.
Kobe (not #24) >>> Angus
oh yeah….
I put this on my momma AND my daddy:
In-N-Out > P. Terry’s >>> Five Guys
there you go. My opinion about beef. Now hug it out fellas.
Each NMC site is a carbon copy clone of each other, I have no idea how they can all continue to operate, seriously. Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of the stuff they post, but it’s all the same!
I’m glad I have a bit of diversity in my blogging.
And I honestly don’t intend to say we’re better than anyone.
=====================================================
Why bother?
They already know.
speaking of TV, i need to sit down and get my shit together for this FreeTV project i wanna start up. well, not entirely FREE, but I’m not trying to be paying any cable company for cable tv.
too much blogger beef to keep me focused, though.
EVERY blog I visit serves a purpose.
Some deal in quantity and some post links without discretion.
Some bring attention to the overlooked, underappreciated, or quirky.
Some of these lone wolf bloggers seem to take themselves way too fucking seriously and have an insular view on things. Yet and still, I appreciate their perspective.
I come to TSS for the writing, the laughs, and the discourse.
I might’ve mentioned it before, but TSS like a barber shop, where everybody’s talkin’ shit & chewin’ the fat.
Oh, before I forget: TSS is home to one the finest Albino writers ever: David D.
*goes back to those Alison Brie posts*
yeah sandra rose is the hater of the century nothing positive on her wack blogg
never really heard about Sandra Rose before, but it sounds like some shit like TMZ or Mediatakeout, which only idiotic shallow dumbfucks visit
TSS! Can you diggit!!!
I didn’t know anything about the “blog battle brewing” in the wilds of the internets. Preeeety gay. Shake seems to catch a lotta flack though, maybe it’s his twitter bio that states, “F*ck you, I blog better” that grinds blogger’s keyboards and rubs their mouse the wrong way. LOL…There’s a lot of room for bloggers to be original and scoop up readers and fans if they have heat and do it right.
A blog is only as good as its contributors.
I actually started with 2DopeBoyz….. but their comments section is too much.
Seems as if everyone is so chill and relaxed before they come here…. all the reason TSS is so much doper. TSS +3
I’m not understanding the point of this post. You say you don’t have time to follow other bloggers, but you fire shots at Noz throughout the article. The point of this whole debate (there was one in the beginning) is that a lot of hip hop music coverage isn’t coming from a genuine place. Giving shine to major artists whose music you don’t like cause they give you hits is not reputable. Simple as that.
I came over to TSS in the middle of 2006 after leaving another popular site that I had been one of the original members of since late 2002.
And I’ve been here. And I’ll stay here. THIS is my home base. THIS is who I rep every time someone asks about my favorite websites. THIS is the website that won’t make me a 3X Black and Blue Smoking Section shirt so I can rock it comfortably and not look like a spaz. (Just kidding on that last one. Maybe)
All respect goes to the other bloggers and what they do, but honestly, nothing compares to TSS. I’m looking for intelligent conversation, not a one off about a topic that the author won’t defend or respond to.
I do go to Rap Radar pretty often, but that’s more out of Mr. Wilson and B.Dot’s writing style and quips.
this is why TSS is the freshest
used to fucks with HipHopDX (before beef got in the way of the message boards).
migrated to 2DopeBoyz….but their C-section is on some bullshit nowadays (word to Athrin).
TSS I discovered around freshman year of college…and my affection for this site grew to the point where I only comment on here when I can (college can get in the way of things….lol).
beef, pointless write-ups, egotitiscal know-it-alls are why I don’t fucks with many blogs. this is a prime example of that.
now if u excuse me…I’ll continue to jack 2Dopeboyz for their music….and read TSS for their write-ups. Oh…MEXICO got beat today…Im worried if we gotta go up against Argentina…AHHHHH!!!!!
this blog is appreciated
I always visit TSS before any other blog. Even before my wack ass blog!
“Self-degrading shameful plug” lol
At the end of the day, support the blogs, and or websites that you enjoy. Skip the rest.
I always visit TSS before any other blog. Even before my wack ass blog!
============================================================
Same here scrams lol.
I hope they have TSS in heaven.
but I laughed at the video of that chick walking backwards, so I might be going to hell.
I hope they have TSS there
Blog beef is the new rap beef. Once magazines started going out to pasture, blogs became the number way for fans to engage their artist and have better access to the music.
TSS is major, one of the main sites I visit on a daily basis. Shit, that Everest College post had me dying (even if I’ve seen the clip and had internet ADD to forget posting it on my little small hub of the super highway).
As a small timer who’s newest claim to fame is getting WordPress goin’ nuts over Kobe Bryant, I kind of follow the TSS blueprint of writing fleshed out articles and going in depth on why the blog and its contributors decided to pick said song.
Whoever said this place is a barbershop is dead on, almost reminds me of that This Ain’t The Barbershop flick that came out recently. You get knowledge, some good music, a few laughs and start the morning with a sexy woman – how can you go wrong?
Ukininam (Teef), fuck you for being so funny and making me think of walking it out backwards slime flu shot girl.
Smoke blogs, don’t beef!
This is the perfect time to re-post lyrics from my underground hit “Internet Beef,” which debuted here a year ago.
For the few of you unfamiliar with this classic joint, it goes to the tune of Mobb Deep’s Survival of the Fittest:
“There’s a war goin on online no man is safe from
You can run but you can’t hide forever in these, PC’s we done took
You bloggin’ wit’ your head down scared to look
Ya’ shook, cuz ain’t no such thing as keyboard crooks…”
You want more?
“No matter how much loot I get I’m stayin’ on the internet, forever
Bugs & viruses, we out-clever
In beef, add me to your blog-roll, let’s pull together…”
Aight! Just a taste o’ the crack, na’mean?
Cop dat mixtape when it drops, nigguh!!!!!!!
Let me be clear, I dont believe in the practice of blog beef
I spoke my piece, a lot of folks felt it needed to be said
But I’m the furthest thing from an attention whore or looking to make a name off of them, I’m just a man with principles.
I’m at work laughing that this has even made it so far as The Smoking Section, kind of honored but really it’s surreal.
I came for the Mythblazers and stayed for the Coolers.
You had to know that this would spark some kind of a debate, as it was one of the intended reasons for the post.
I also don’t think you intended to start beef, but I’m not sure there is any other way to categorize it when you call someone out by name (props though for being an adult about it) and highlight thier actions in a negative way.
I am interested in understanding the who in the “many people thought it needed to be said.” I think that may have been the better way of addressing the topic because it would have taken you out of middle.
————————————–
As for Gotty’s post, I think the keeping up is the easy part. The “why” is the hard question to answer. More than likely, it’s because we all like staring at what we belive is a train wreck. I know I am guilty of following people on Twitter who post things I can’t stand. It took a couple of weeks for me to realize I was torturing myself. lol
Scott Storch
What I meant was many folks have come out in agreement since it’s gone up
“Earlier references removed out of respect and inaccuracy.”
Gotty, don’t remove no references!
Fuck ‘em, man! Fuck ANYBODY who talk sideways about TSS!
What’s the matter with a lil’ ill will? Everybody ain’t gotta be friends & shit.
Props to young h for providing material for such a dope post…speaking of which…young h is in the building…
Man, so what if eskay posts “mainstream” stuff that he “got paid” for by Def Jam. If I don’t like it, on to the next one. As long as I see songs that I want I’ll keep going there.
I still fux with 2DopeBoyz but only to say thnx here and there when I like a particular post,I don’t really comment like I used too…and ESPECIALLY not since they went to Complex servers ugh
never used to regularly check TSS, but honestly, it’s been my main site for a few months now, just because it combines the best of all my favorites, without most of their most annoying qualities.
It’s one of the few which holds my attention for a long period of time just for quality of information rather than quantity of posts, without the self-righteousness.
I honestly believe these guys enjoy writing, and participating in their blog as much as we enjoy reading it. It’s not just a job, and it’s not about shining harder than anybody else.
Love the diversity, humor, and singular worldview. You can tell, ’cause I never comment on any blog as much as I do this one.
TSS is one of the main sites I go to, if it wasn’t for TSS I would’ve never discovered other sites in the uproxx. I actually feel comfortable writing posts to this site because there’s smart commenters on here, unlike NahRight and 2DB which just starts beef if you dislike anything. Film Drunk and Warming Glow, I’m afraid to comment cause it might not be sarcastic enough.
But TSS was always major! And I discovered TSS reading that Khia review back in ’08, never laughed so hard in my life!
Fuckin lovefest in here, now that its been scrubbed.
I cosign it all. TSS is the best mayne.
Well said Gotti!
Gotta comment on here!
Been reading TSS for two years now and ain’t goin’ nowhere!
Co-sign at @Athrin comments.
