Within the last week alone, there have been enough injury casualties during World Cup prep to construct a winning eleven of crocked footballers.
Rio Ferdinand, Didier Drogba, Holland’s Arjen Robben, Italy’s Andrea Pirlo, Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel, and Portugal’s Nani all look to miss out on the tournament one day away. Fresh injury doubts now surround Spain’s Andres Iniesta, Australia’s Tim Cahill, Brazil’s Julio Cesar, and Switzerland’s Alex Frei. Not to mention, we found out months ago that otherwise certain participants David Beckham, Michael Ballack, and Michael Essien wouldn’t be making the trip.
Blame it on the long, fatiguing domestic seasons for running the players ragged and robbing us & them of some memorable World Cup moments. The most disappointing absence is Drogba as a freak tackle claimed his elbow, of all body parts. The best player on the best African team, there leaves little chance of Ivory Coast progressing out of the “Group of Death” including Brazil and Portugal, now having to rely on raw, markedly inferior replacements Gervinho and Salomon Kalou for bagging goals. Even if Drogba does make it back on the team sheet, it’ll probably be all too late.
Africa’s next best hope will also struggle to cope with their notable absentees. For Nigeria, Mikel was their midfield anchor, as was the case with Ghana and Essien. An unproven Anthony Annan or an in-form Kevin-Prince Boateng may fill the latter’s boots, but with teammates Sulley Muntari and Stephen Appiah also not in top shape, Ghana’s one true strength is now a glaring weakness.
Robben and Nani present similar conundrums for their respective teams. The former, one of the five best players in the world this past year, and the latter, making strides towards reaching his potential with United, provide their national squads with needed width in 4-3-3 formations. Holland will now push Rafael Van der Vaart wide or hope Eljero Elia can be one of the tournament’s breakout stars, while Portugal may have to keep Cristiano Ronaldo on the wings as opposed to the tempting proposition of him leading the line in the center.
And out of the remaining absentees, the potential loss of Tim Cahill stands apart. The unequivocal, inspirational leader behind Australia, he’s a big-game player as his Everton history proves and perhaps the only one for the Socceroos. As for England, Spain and Brazil, they have the strength in numbers to compensate. Spoiled for choice in those injury-hit departments, the absences might even ease their selection choices.
Yet, in a tournament like this, the little differences down the depth chart could ultimate alter the bigger picture.

Let’s focus on the positive:
THE WORLD CUP STARTED. CHEA!
FOOTBALL(SOCCER) WORLD CUP
FRANCE VS URUGUAY
TONIGHT !!!
Im glad these ESPN commentators dont understand the concept of the offside rule. The mexican player was clearly offside, it was a good call. All its going to take is one bounce for South Africa and this game is over. These fans are just waiting for it. THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SPORT AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOMENT OF THIS SPORT.
I think Robben hurts the most. They had a good shot at Brazil in the quarters with him. Hopefully he will be healthy. Drogba should be good. Nani’s would hurt Portugal but I didnt see them making in out of the group before he got hurt.
@devin… it seems like drogba may play against portugal.
YYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!! SOUTH AFRICA BITCHES
that was an impossible shot to stop
mexico got lucky
Damn this is all real rough. yo and have y’all heard that curren$y nate dogg track, let’s get it crackin? So sick…most of my friends agree…
Yeah, the injury jinx has struck, yet again!
BTW, Devin what you predicting for the England vs USA game?
England 4
USA 0
Rooney to grab a brace, Gerrard with a wonder strike and Joe Cole to add on with one more! :P
draw…..guess it’s a fair result for my Mexican side…lol.
that shot…was perfect. no one….not even the likes of Buffon and Casillas coulda stopped that one!
@sir run paw paw… you seem to forget that the refs want the americans to win
1-1 or 2-2 draw with one english super star ejected. most likely rooney. this brazilian ref for the match in horrendous.
Anyone interested in the deciding factor in this match look below:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jun/06/england-world-cup-2010-referee
all refs have been required to learn swear words in english, however they arent required to learn them in any other language
@PSA, I thought South Africa were pretty wasteful in front of goal today, they should have had it wrapped up. But Mexico had their chances as well, was impressed by Giovanni Dos Santos in particular, never played like that for Tottenham Hotspurs!
@PandasNeedWorldCup, good grief! That article does not make for merry reading, why the heck is he grinning in the picture like that? LOL! I think Steven Gerrard will rally England to sound victory over the USA, Joe Cole will shine, if he gets a chance to start that is, but our defence isn’t the strongest in the world, truth be told and the USA are improving fast as the years go by.
@sir run… we are improving, as footballers. Our once stingy defense however has turned into mush. we probably wont allow very many goals from crosses, especially from our left side, but im worried. I just fear the ref is going to make the game about him instead of the players. As a ManU fan and overall football fan i have seen firsthand the disastrous results a wayne rooney tantrum can cause for his team.
wow i cant believe the amount of people claiming that mexico got screwed by a bad offside call. the dude was clearly offside. its not always the refs fault. only in the US v England game.
England: 3 vs. USA 1
Just my humble prediction. GO NETHERLANDS!!!
Forgot to mention: Is it just me, or do the groups look a bit too easy for the favoured teams to breeze through uncontested?
GO NETHERLANDS!!!
===============================
agreed. before robben got hurt they were playing the most beautiful football in the world. my pre tourney favorites.
@Pandas Honestly I hope Rooney keeps his cool, the USA isn’t a team that baits their opponents from what I’ve seen over the years. I just hope nothing erupts like that, because Rooney is our talisman, if he crumbles, then I don’t even need to express how it goes. We have a few hot heads in the squad, but I hope our captain and the elder heads in the squad can keep things contained on that front. It must be a concern, because there is a piece on it over at the BBC:-
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8732497.stm
BTW, did you see any of the World Cup concert last night? Alicia Keys, Will Smith and loads of others, I heard this K’NAAN song for the first time, when he performed it. I like it, as much as the other world cup track with AKON and Keri Hilson, but this K’NAAN one his much more rousing.
I’m missing boxing circuit training tonight to watch the Uruguay vs France in a bit. I want to see if France can prove the punters wrong, who say they are a spent force!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8__lUfx7zdo
I’m mad that Drogba’s injured but I’m not gonna dwell on it. In the meantime Wayne Rooney is gonna go wild today.
@cadet. drogba will be fine. that man is a footballer. He will be out there and may even net one against a weaker than hyped portugal side.
@sir run… its bob bradley. i hate him. he forever puts the wrong 11 out. Like buddle. Move dempsey up front and bring torres in, forget buddle, use him as a sub. he will do better that way anyway. but bradley is no nonsense and loves the game. i dont see him advocating baiting rooney or anyone for that matter. he is all about fair play. however whether an american player baits rooney on his own is a different matter. lets hope not. and lets hope the hoopla about the ref is all for naught.
@Paw
yeah….Dos Santos was creating plenty chances for us…too bad none of the mexican forwards were able to convert.
and yeah…S. Africa could have had the dagger…that was the biggest sigh of relief Ive had in a looooong time…makes me wonder if El Tri will een be able to compete with France. Aguirre better start Man U’s new starlet, “Chicharito” and Guardado next game…Mexico can create chances, just score!
South Africa…Im just glad they;re in the spotlight….fitting for the first goal in an African World Cup…to be from an African nation. I hope this World Cup helps out that country…especially in areas that need it the most.
U.S – 1
England – 2
Rooney will NOT be denied…though if he gets sent off at all or isn’t performing…the tide can turn quick to the U.S side!
Drogba is tough as nails, we’ll be seeing him, for sure.
@Pandas, the USA camp sound confident, Bob Bradley, Oguchi Onyewu and Jonathan Spector are all waxing lyrical that they feel confident of beating England. I think we’re being cautious here because we saw how the USA did in the Confederations Cup, last year.
Is the US Torres as good as his name sake Fernando Torres? :P :)
Altidore likely to start? He’s got a spark about him that kid.
Check this from BBC ticker tape:-
Apparently someone has staked £110,000 on France to win the World Cup at odds of 20/1. It is an each-way bet which could make a profit of £1.65m – which would be the biggest winning football bet of all time. tres courageux or tres stupide? I’ll let you decide…
and yeah….that K’Naan song is doooooooooope!!!
makes me wonder if El Tri will een be able to compete with France.
===========================================================
Really? I feel France is the worst in this group. Its all very close. I think as far as how good the teams are it goes Uruguay, Mexico, France, and South Africa. but i think you all or uruguay join south africa in the next round because of the fan support for the home side.
@PSA, you need to discover another Jared Borgetti amongst your crop of future players! :)
@paw.. yeah altidore when his mind is in the game is a beast of a striker.. he is fine, we were just being cautious. yeah i dont sense fear, just caution not to repeat 1950 from england. Torres is a creative player on the ball and has amazing pace. he is exactly what we need in our midfield. like i said, bradley, great leader, horrible at picking players. No reason bornstein is on the final 23.
as far as the france bet, if you can afford to place that bet and accept not getting anything back then its brilliant. i think france is garbage though. theyve looked bad before a world cup before though, and they finished second that year, so who knows.
Co sign the knaan song, been rockin to it on the world cup game for xbox
Wow I thought the US VS England was going down today. Way to jump the gun huh? Also who thinks Theo Walcott should’ve made the final cut?
@cadet. i think theo walcott is englands freddy adu
@Paw
I KNOW! Borgetti always came through…hopefully Guardado, Chicharito or Vela can convert the feeds from Dos Santos…Gio had a surefire goal if not for the great save from S. Africa’s keeper.
it all depends with France….they have awesome talent (Henry, Anelka, Ribery, Malouda)….its just a matter of can they perform at a World Cup level now…and if they wont be distracted from the sex scandals that’s plaguing them. If they play to form like in 06′….watch out. if not…then yeah…Mexico and Uruguay can make it out of the group.
*Wow I thought the US VS England game was going down today…
@ PandasNeedWorldCup
I see what you’re saying but he’s still way better than Freddy. I thought he was good enough to make it but I guess he wasn’t consistent enough.
@S.Cadet, I honestly believe that Theo Walcott should have made the squad, he has not been that match fit for Arsenal last season, but when he has been, he has proven to be a great impact player. I believe this is where England could have benefited in taking him, his pace is frightening, but he is still only 21 and I believe he will be an integral part of our international team set up over the next decade or so.
@PSA, yeah France got some serious off the field ish going down huh? Anyway, I’m going down to watch the match, this is going to be interesting. :)
he’s still way better than Freddy.
=======================================
thats why he is englands freddy adu. he is still good enough to play, just not yet
haha france. henry would have put that away
yup. just seen that…Henry mos def would scored there.
might as well use this as our open thread for day 1 of the World Cup…haha!
from 7am to around 430 pm i dont leave the tv area. i talk football all day. and i tell my 5 month old son that he better man up and stop crying cuz you dont make the world cup that way. so yes, i feel daily threads on the world cup are necessary, even if there is only 5 or 6 of us talking
Happy that Walcott didn’t make it, actually. Thought that Adam Johnson should’ve had a spot on the plane. And even though he plays for Citeh, I think he’s the future for England.
@Paw
2-0 Eng, but obviously I’d like to see more goals. US been mad disrespectful in the lead-up.
its not disrespect. its confidence. We gonna beat you just like we did in 1950 AND in WW2
^believes none of that unless we can get the ref to hook us up with a few no look red cards. turn and BAM, rooney red card, BAM, there goes gerrard.
With the exception of that Gourcuff free kick, this match is a bore. Seemed better on paper.
i dont know… i figured 1 or 2 goals total. neither team is very good offensively. argentina light is more of a threat to score i feel.
outside backs for france will be key
i think that was a poor call on the red card, should have been a yellow.
good match, bad luck for uruguay. Great first day overall and we are off. Even if we dont get an open thread for each day of the world cup i will attempt to turn one thread a day into it, no matter the intended subject matter.
That was a straight up red card, Sagna was lucky not have suffered damage to his leg up.
But I cannot believe that is France, they looked jaded and without direction. I am still trying to fathom what I just saw, you have a squad with players like that, but no cohesion and commitment to win? What is going on over there? The media is on their case, there is shit going down on and off the field between players and coaching staff. Somebody needs to kick that house into shape.
What is Domanech doing with the timing of his announcement that he is leaving his post after the world cup is done? Dude chill with that, wait until the competition is done.
Besides, Patrice Evra I cannot say that I saw anybody else giving over 60% in the French team, they were lucky as well because Forlan who is a predatory lion was lurking and waiting, he almost got in as well.
Unbelievable, France really needs to ask questions of themselves, must improve fast, that group is up for grabs!
I feel like he mistimed the tackle. i dont think there was intent. it was bad timing which made it look worse. either way, oh well.
I agree on france, thats why i have them finishing last in this group. they have been playing like dog shit for well over a year. garbage. the only reason they are in the world cup is because they cheated my people out of bid
Laurent Blanc will step in for Domanech after the world cup I believe. He’s got younger cats like Karim Benzima and Samir Nasri that can help forge the next reign, but man it looks a mess there. I heard about it, but I didn’t believe, until I saw with my own two eyes, they lacked direction and commitment.
There are millions of young men in France who would give anything to put on that jersey and play for a fraction of what them guys are getting paid, heck there are many who would do it for free.
Here’s a photo trail of day one of the World Cup:-
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8687462.stm
A’yo this version is even better, got Damian Marley heading the ball and wot not, this is my jam for World Cup season!
http://vimeo.com/10085362
back at it….and I’m glad to see this thread at 50+ comments while the NBA one was close to 40…lol. no bashing over here…Im hoping for an L.A Finals victory! but this is the World Cup! I’ll be on here as much as I can commentating as well whenever it deems fit.
but yeah…I had to tune out of the game for the 2nd half….but I heard….France struggled mightily. If they showed that kind of performance on the pitch….then perhaps El Tri can triumph in 1st for this group after all…everyone is tied in Group A…Mexico can do it! Though the same can now be said for Uruguay and S. Africa as well. These three teams must be extremely happy that France is crumbling before our very eyes.
NBA vs Footy? No Competition, the beautiful game, hands, how can half a billion people be wrong? ;) :P
Yeah, Group A is super tight, I think Uruguay are the shrewdest bet though cos of Diego Forlan, I saw that guy destroy my beloved Liverpool FC in the UEFA Cup, he is a very clever footballer indeed.
If Uruguay can hold their forte in defence then they will always have a chance of scoring cos of Forlan. That Luis Alberto Suárez looks decent as well but I didn’t see much today that indicates that he would translate his astounding club form into the national team, but it’s just the first game yet.
I’m gonna head back home tommorow in time for Argentina vs Nigeria and of course the big one in the evening with our good friends across the pond. ;)
It’s been a good start to the world cup, the atmosphere looks absolutely electric in South Africa, I hope it continues all the way through and beyond.
@Paw
tell that to an American…lmao.
but yeah…Uruguay can win it. they also played a part in France’s demise by frustrating them all night long. Wide open group now. Defense can win championships…and with Uruguay, you’re right…they defende well, Forlan will always be their major threat.
As much as I’m gonna root for the U.S…their back line is suspect. Their defense will have to play one heck of a game to make sure Rooney and company don’t shred them. I still say…2-1 England win…but if the Lions don’t come in top form, the U.S can steal it.
shoot. whatever the most recent thread is ill be on at 7 am DMV time commenting on the korea greece game… to myself most likely but fuuug it… this is the world cup. this aint some countries professional league finals… this is the worlds finals.
shit im american… while i feel i am a huge minority (and not just cuz im white…. boosh!!) i cant fathom someone choosing to watch another sport over my beloved football, even if its just a domestic game, football is the most beautiful sport ever.
@PSA, seek out a DVD called Once In A Lifetime, it is essential viewing, and a worthy edition to one’s DVD collection. about the rise and fall of the New York Cosmos, from what I could see soccer was a huge in the USA. They say if the USA had won the right to host the 1986 World Cup, it would have re-galvanised the American interest in the game to the level it was in the 1970s. I’m giving it another 25 years or so before it’s bigger than the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. The Americans love it, how else do you explain their fascination with the likes of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi and Didier Drogba.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_in_a_Lifetime:_The_Extraordinary_Story_of_the_New_York_Cosmos
I expect Joe Cole to shine tommorow, honestly the hunger in his eyes, he is ready to go, and also watch out for Aaron Lennon and James Milner. Steven Gerrard will boss it in midfield. It will be interesting to see if Jermaine Defoe starts along with Wayne Rooney.
I’ve checked out the USA squad, there’s some notable players there. I fear Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey the most, seasoned vets.
They giving the World Cup major coverage in the USA? Is it on the pay channels only or free to air channels? It should be free to air, honestly this is one event that everybody should be allowed to experience for free on TV. It’s only right! :)
@sir espn and abc and univision (spanish channel) cable television. however, the espn announcers today were horrendous, i prefer watching the spanish channel. Lennon is a beast, i truly feel if he can stay healthy he can have a great career. He is kinda like Torres for us, imo. Good pace, creative like i was saying earlier.
@Paw
I’ve read a bit on the New York Cosmos and when they got Pele. that way before my time (I’m about to turn 22 in July)…I couldn’t fathom the U.S be that “soccer” crazy anytime soon…although over here, ESPN is giving mass coverage of the tourney. that’s on regular cable…with select games on regular TV, which is ABC (ESPN is affiliated with ABC, which are both owned by Disney, I think). I haven’t seen that DVD, so I’ll give it a spin after the Cup is over.
oh….anyone here watch “Special1TV”? lmao….I swear…puppet Jose, Sven and Wayne are some of the best comedy I’ve seen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S2BB34sfH0&feature=channel
“BE CHAMPIONS!”
My Altidore jersey just came in the mail today, perfect timing, sort of…
Drogba’s injury looks so fierce, that must have hurt. At least it’s not a broken leg or anything, I hope he plays against Portugal.
USA! USA!
Univision is dope too for those that like watching in Spanish. GOLAZO! GOLAZO! GOLAZO!….never gets old. I myself was laughing hysterically at the spanish announcers trying to prounounce “Tshabalala”. TSHABALALA!!!! lmao. funny hearing that in spanish.
and my favorite…”SE LA PERDIOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!” (he lost it…it standing for a goal…imagine hearing that after that missed shot by S. Africa in the 90th minute).
Good Football played by S. Africa and Mexico but France Uruguay not so much but who cares I want my house devided match USA England bitches I’ll be calling my fam in America when the 3 lions murder them but I think Americana can keep it to say either 3-1 or 2-0
@ Paw I thought Fabio was going to start Crouch up front but I might be wrong and I’m pondering the Hesky bit yah Physically he’s a monster and he’s got potential but to me should’a been Bent
Heskey will probably start.
France is a mess. On paper, they should win the World Cup with that squad.
Was looking to see what Suarez could do against good comp. Impressive in the few eredivisie games I saw but not too much today. Thinking he might be another Kezman.
@ Devin Frances problem is they have a shit for brains maneger
Robben is back with the Dutch squad :P
HOLLAND HOLLAND HOLLAND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah Heskey could very well start, just depends on how Capello goes for it in terms of the attacking angle. You can’t Peter Crouch either, his record for England is really good.
But Heskey usually gets on with it quietly in terms of the holding attacker that lays off the main spearhead, in this case Rooney (who better watch is tongue because the referee is listening, LOL).
I was under the impression that you guys in the States got BBC worldwide channel(s) for free as well. They got really good coverage on the BBC I must admit (the other channels covering it in the UK is ITV which is also free).
germany >>>
in my opionion germany will win the cup
Germany, always rock solid perfomers cos they do the basics right! :)
In other news Arjen Robben will probably be playing, pretty soon!
I work at a country club shining shoes (yeah…) anyways today I had the game on in the lounge and needless to say the members had to fuckin shine their own shoes. Those cheap bastards are on their own during the cup.
Lets hope that this comment does not get censured Kidding of course.
