I have to give my better half full credit. She was the one who actually had this on shuffle the other day and I snuck to hit repeat.
Can anyone give me a logical reason why we criticize types like Kanye & Drake for singing, yet give praise to Andre? I do remember Andre catchin’ hella flack initially, then most listeners came around. So since we’ve already knocked down that door, where’s the disconnect when other rappers trade notepads for high notes?

ps- ‘the love below’ was a banger

That’s EXACTLY what happened.
I’m guessing Andre got a pass cuz he had built up such a solid reputation as one of rap’s premier lyricists, and when he started shifting to a more eclectic/eccentric/esoteric expression of himself, it was viewed as genuine rather than contrived, especially post-Erykah lol
The shots at Kanye were prolly out of resentment. We were expecting a return to boom-bap, which we all know he can do extremely well. He hit us with 808s. Plus he’s a diva, so that’s what prolly fueled the criticism
Folks, in general, just wanna easily classify, categorize, and put others in a box with a label

100% agree
Andre’s subject matter and style was a lot more creative than Drake’s current sing-songs. Kanye, OTOH, can go either way.
Comparing them just because they sing is like saying “How come people don’t think Erykah Badu and Brandy are on the same level? They both sing songs.”
Sheesh! Smoking Section just loves stabbing me in the heart.
We gave Andre that pass because he started singing a long time ago and then finally just said f*ck it and made an entire album of him singing. And the tunes were tuff.
this is the same beat for kid cudi whenever?
prototype = top 5 songs ever for me
That new dream tho? 8o

Right there with you, man
I can understand the flack that Drake and Yeezy get, though I don’t necessarily agree with it. While I enjoyed 808′s I think it’s fair to say it was purely a product of Kanye’s self-indulgence. As for Drake, it sorta makes sense that people would lash out against him for singing since he’s been crowned the savior of all things hip-hop. Also, Drake’s star rose really quickly, which makes him an easy target. 3-Stacks on the other hand is undisputed hip-hop royalty, he can more or less get away with anything at this point.

Yep.
Andre, gets away with the singing because he has lyrical skills, what ever he touches it makes you think about what was said. This is not a diss at Drake but, he sounds like Lil Wayne now. I guess everyone that is apart of Young Money has changed their style to song like him Example: Nicki Minaj, Drake and everyone else.
I still think Drake has skills and is one of the best up and comers in hip-hop but, it is on the softer side (Pause.)Drake has a skill that most people don’t have and that he can sing but he makes his songs for the ladies and most of us guys think it is just soft period. Can related to those songs! Kanye, on the other hand was coming off a classic album Graduation and begun sing with auto- tune this had mishap written all over it from day one. Kanye, has skills and that’s what made people go out and buy Graduation not singing on auto- tune.
In urban music, there’s 2 types of singers: Jamie Foxx and Force MDs. (Yes I’m old, eff y’all!)
Jamie Foxx is the cat who can sing pretty good for someone who does something else by trade (actor/comedian).
Mos Def is a pretty good singer—for an MC.
Phonte is a very good singer–for a cat who’s an MC.
Black Thought is a good singer–for an MC.
Then you got your Force MDs types–cats that rhyme and sing equally well and are good enough at both to make a living at one or the other. They’re truly rare.
Lauryn Hill was a Force MD… I’m hard-pressed to name any others.
Cudi, Drake, and the rest… these cats cant sing. I appreciate the effort, sorta. but they can’t sing. Not at all.
I’d rather punch Bob Dylan in the crotch and listen to the aftermath than put up with another one of these no singing cats.
We’ve all heard to many good, great and just-okay singers to accept this extra-smedium mess.
Sorry, I can’t.
Canseco – Andre is a Force MD or a Jamie Foxx?
cause Drake dont really sing that well (though i respect the guy) and Kanye can’t sing at all, he used autotune. Andre’s shit is so left field and weird, I still never came around 100% but Love Below definitely has some bangers. Im so ready for Son of Chico Dusty.
Andre would still get a good amount of shit for it if he came back after all this time with just singing & hardly any rappin at all
Kanye got shit for because his singing SUCKED, & was pure autotune, & didn’t even sound like “good autotune”. I’ve come around to a few songs, & of course now there is NO DENYING that the album is a milestone moment, but I still feel like it should’ve been done as a group or side project. but he deserves to get shit for singing, — he can’t sang.
Q-Tip got shit for singing
shiiiiit, even CEE-LO got shit for singing, & he’s got one of the most respectable singing voices of any artist ever all time.
so of course Drake is going to get a little shit for it. that doesn’t mean that he should listen. & that doesn’t mean that the general public will hate, it just means haters will hate…
Andre songs were creatively more oringinal.Drake sound p>>sy trying to fill in where his lyrics lack. Kanye’s was just genius.
mos sounds aight singin on wax, but live he sucks…
or maybe he just had an off night, i watched an ep of austin city limits with him & he sounded HORRIBLE
@Black Canseco – I still remember you’re 4A analysis lol.
A lot of people can sing. A lot of MC’s can sing. They choose not to, because they know they are not singers by trade – they do not know the ins and outs musically of singing properly and therefore do not try to make a career out of it.
Drake/Cudi is a pop artist, people that listen to pop music do not care about how well someone is singing.
I truly believe that the reason why we as a hip-hop/ rap community give “passes” to artists like Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, and Cee Lo is because when we listen to thier music it sounds like it’s coming from their heart; its really them and we as listeners become connected to them because of it. When Kanye did it everyone thought he was feeding his ego and not trying to achieve that level of intimacy with the listeners. When Drake does it, no one thinks much of it because he hasn’t put his all into it yet and he is still a fairly new artist. We just got to give them more time and room to do this and not be so critical as consumers.
like ga ga and goo goo all mamma lol teach me something new lol thats my jams
In my longwinded ass analysis I missed my point about Dre… I need my meds. Again.
Dre is a Jamie Foxx singer.
Cee-lo is borderline. At this point in Cee’s career he’s prolly sung almost as much as he rapped [on official releases, at last]. You know dude’s gonna sing so….
Shoutsout to Mike P.
“Prototype” got planned 11x in a row before I would allow myself to even hear the next song; pure crack
Because
A) Andre is an absolute madman with his rhymes, so he has earned the right to experiment. He raps circles around um, almost everyone
B) The music was actually really dope
C) Drake f*ckin sucks donkey cock
D) Kanye didn’t catch flack, people f*cks with that album
i like drakes shit but after hearing find your love this weekend in a club while extremely inebriated i came to the conclusion his singing voice sounds like elmer fudd on auto tune…
