TSS: Hi-Tek, I see you’re following the path of Dr. Dre and Timbaland by trying to become the next super-producer, Jr. bodybuilder world champion.
Hi-Tek: Ha! I just like to take care of myself man…
TSS: So it feels like Reflection Eternal is here to stay now. It won’t be so difficult to do the solo thing and still come back together…right?
Hi-Tek: I think so. Yeah.
Talib Kweli: Yeah, but I think timing is everything in music and right now, is just the perfect time more than anything.
TSS: So what’s the chances of getting a Black Star album solely produced by Hi-Tek. Black Star Eternal?
Talib Kweli: Hmmm…that’s not impossible at all, seeing that Hi-Tek produced the majority of the first record.
Hi-Tek: Oh man…(Laughs) That’s kind of reaching far!
Everybody: (Laughs!!!)
Hi-Tek: It ain’t reaching that far–but it’s far enough, you know what I’m saying! But actually, it’s just like us doing this Reflection Eternal album. We really have to be able to sit down and iron out the details. Black Star was Mos Def’s idea. He set a lot of the groundwork but once we got into it, I felt like me and Kweli are the ones who really wrapped it up. He was doing movies, he was busy and was like “I already got the blueprint, y’all gotta do y’alls part.” But we would have to come back together and do it the right way. We would look at where everybody was at musically and go from there. We’re not going to do it just because the people want it.
We’ve got to do it the right way.
Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek a.k.a. Reflection Eternal’s brand new album Revolutions Per Minute features appearances from Bun B, Estelle, Chester French, Mos Def, J Cole, Jay Electronica, Bilal and Res and is available on iTunes, Amazon and in stores TODAY courtesy of Warner Bros. and Blacksmith Records. Cause at this point, no one takes Mr. Badu seriously.
Dude likes to hear himself stutter.
Great interview.
If TSS was a late night talk show, I’d watch (blunt in hand of course).

really? weren’t the internets just crownin this dude as the next nasir?
i wonder if jay elec will be subject to the same fate as charles hamilton…mega, internet based buzz, and then destroyed by the same internet cats..

Nah. These rappers destroy themselves. The ‘nets just take it & run with it, positive or negative.
“We’ve got to do it the right way.”
There it is righ there. Simple yet smart. And that’s the difference between Talib and Jy Electronica for those who brought him up.
Right now, J Elect-hanukkah is all physique and no strength. I think he’s a more talented and versatile MC than Talib, but Talib has spent the last years really building his catalog and working the field, plantin seeds and polishing his craft. Even if RPM sucked, which it doesn’t–it’s impossible to hate dude’s work ethic and drive and maturity.
What’s Jay doing besides waiting for another DJ repackage Exhibit C with some random stuff we already heard 3 years back and call it a fresh mixtape?
Jay needs to take note of Talib and roll up the sleeves and put that muscle to work before he goes down as another coulda-shoulda-woulda (csw).
Co-Sign BC. Even The Beautiful Struggle, which was regarded as Talib’s worst album was still an enjoyable listen. All Jay E has given me was interviews, beef with Kay Slay, and Exhibit A.
I’d rather wait 6 months for a new JE song then sit through a mediocre Kweli album.
But with that said, I’m really digging RPM…and I’m far from a Talib fan.

i agree.. my only point was to illustrate how crazy jay elec’s buzz was coming off of “exhibit c” and how people were acting like he just dropped “illmatic”.. i like elec, but damn.. just sayin that his lack of productivity has come back to bite him, because without new music, people are limited to talking about kay-slay, or the benzino clip or what have you

What do you really want to be said? IDK about the rest of the internuts but I ,for one , only care to discuss music. Not conspiracies , gossip/rumors , or what another man’s random opinion may be about another man. Just sayin.

Concur. RPM is gonna be dope from what I can tell.
@ Black Canseco, for all we know Jay E has a lot of material but hasn’t released it because it’s not up to his standard yet. Just’ said he’s been back and forth between him and Em so you know he’s been doing something , this ‘ jr Dr Dre ‘ speed may just be his process.
I don’t really like the whole they boxing me in thing they kept saying. I don’t really like that midnight hour track much or that type of music. When an artist makes something different than what they usually do and I dont like it and I call em out on it it isnt me trying to box em in. It’s me saying that shit is wak. If I dont like it I dont like it, doesnt mean that im boxing you in?
Cell,
I can see your point. Coming up on Rakim, if there was ever someone who waited too long between albums it was him. So I guess i can give JE the benefit of the doubt—to a point.
At some point MCs have to MC.
In this day and age, there’s almost no cause for not putting out your own material. Maybe not a full length, but when you’ve got guys doing a song a week, a mixtape a month…
I’m just saying.
It’s prolly a false comparison between JE and Talib on my part, given where hip hop was 15 yrs ago with Talib started out. You had to drop material and perform or you didn’t eat back then. Period.
Now, a couple crazy interviews, a little web buzz, a mic shot or two and next thing you know: soup’s on.
Strange days, I guess.
Word, I feel ya on a MC gotta MC. And Jay E definitely has not taken the normal course of action in garnering a buzz but like Amp implied, the music is worth the wait. In the mean/between time I’ll just finish listening to the Prayer for Michael Vick, satisfy some nostalgia with My World and continue trying to decipher Dimethyltryptamine
@ Cell,
No doubt the ability is there. time’ll tell tho.
But since Talib came thru, might as well give him his due. RPM is a pretty good album so far. I know there’ll be a proper TSS review coming in another week or so, but I’m diggin it so far.
I’m already copping. I don’t even want to hear anymore cuts. I’m now at that position where I’m sold, just wanna hear it already with the sleeve in my hand looking through the artwork and credits.
As far as rap goes, there are few emcees I respect more than Talib Kweli. Dude puts passion and relevence into every verse he records. I copped this cd about an hour ago (along with Distant Relatives) and am gonna sit down and digest later on. Appreciate the dope smoking session as usual, TSS.
…back again

Solid interview, the album is dope.
Jay E better be careful; he will end up just like Chucky Hamilton. Instead of pontificating on every topic known to man; he needs to bunker himself in a studio and go to work.
God I hate when niggas disregard a post and leave a totally unrelated comment. Shout out to eskay but this ain’t Nah Right lol.
I had Reeses cereal for breakfast. The fuck?
That Nas comparison of Jay Elect. is valid because Nasir has been known to say some of the wall shit when he gets the spotlight.
What I’ve heard of this album so far is pleasing to the ears and mind.

wha happan?
right now Jay Elect got his fans begging for his music. He had a mystique about him thats coming apart now and at this rate he’ll be begging for fans soon. 2 official tracks in years is not a good look whichever way you cut it.
Waiting for my copy of RPM. the leaked records were dope.
Hi-Tek is one of my favorite producers, i trust he came correct.
What happened to Dion and Jonells’s albums though? Opportunity gone? hope not…
This youn g dude about to bring hip-hop back [usershare.net]
Great smiking session!
I mean smoking, unconscious mashup of mic and smoke, nice. ^^
