04.08.10 Written by TC

Latins coming together to Rise Up in Hip-Hop is always a welcomed look. Still smokin’ after all these years, B-Real & The Gang bring the joyous salsa vibes to flavor the summer season with a video that only adds to the song’s increasing popularity. Read the rest of this entry »

Fight For Worst: Arab Vs. Lil B

04.08.10 Written by TSSCrew

The end of the line for taste and musicality has been coming up quickly. Now we have that demise documented in two, very special videos from two, very special individuals who have been able to compartmentalize all people into three, very descriptive categories.

That is; “b*tches,” “aggins” and “f*ggots.” Read the rest of this entry »

Jay Elect-shirt-ica

04.08.10 Written by Jason H.

You know you’ve made it when fans are inspired to put your name on t-shirts. Moreso, it’s even better when you didn’t even commission them yourself. Looks like some key performances have only propelled the Jay Electronica hype train, even when he leaves us hanging without an album to show for it.

These dudes from X Is The Weapon apparently don’t give a crap what we write. They most likely have “Exhibit C” on repeat, with the result being the tee you see before you. With the price they’re charging for the tees only covering production expenses, you can see this is not a profit project. Links to his mixtape and iTunes pages don’t hurt the cause either. TSS Presents Smoking Sessions With Rocky Rivera

04.08.10 Written by TC

Despite the increased opportunites to be heard through the microphone, the world still endures a dearth of female rappers and fans that will lend them an ear to be heard. Subtract the ones that are actually talented, and the pickens are even slimmer. But stats don’t speak for individuality achievement and Krishtine de Leon demonstrates enough core Hip-Hop in her blood to be considered going extinct anytime soon. Read the rest of this entry »

Mayer Hawthorne – “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” Video

04.08.10 Written by Gotty™

To coincide with a collaborative effort between Stones Throw, Freegums and Huf, here’s a clip of Mayer covering a Tony Bennett original. And there’s skateboarding, which happens to be a distant relative to Hip-Hop in a rebellious sense and the fact that they both grew up together @ the same time. So, really, what’s not to love here? Tiger’s Dad Speaks From The Grave

04.08.10 Written by David D.

Nike always knows how to turn lemons into lemonade. They turned Kobe and LeBron not meeting in the finals last year into delicious freshly squeezed hilarity (and moolah).

This, though, is like turning lemons into a nice cup of awkward punch on a warm summer’s morrow. First of all, it’s downright creepy. Tiger’s dad is speaking from the dead while Captain Faithful stands there for a Spike Lee-esque close-up. The whole thing makes me uncomfortable. Read the rest of this entry »

Suzanne Vega x The Roots “Tom’s Diner” On Late Night With Fallon

04.08.10 Written by Gotty™

Duh uh DUH uh duh duh da…”

Grew up in the ’80s? Yeah, no way avoiding the automatic foot-tapping that happens as soon as you hear the bassline for “Tom’s Diner.” Suzanne Vega stops by The Roots late night jam spot to do a rendition of the one song we all know her for, even if we only know that monosyllabic line. After The Smoke – “One In A Million”

04.08.10 Written by Gotty™

Remember After The Smoke? The “Typical Weekend” guys that I mentioned a few weeks ago. Of course you don’t because we all consume a mass amount of mp3s weekly. Either way, their digital EP Under The Influence released on iTunes last week…so now I feel guilt-free in posting the other track that grabbed my ear.

Where “Typical…” was upbeat & energetic, “One In A Million” is every bit it’s opposite, except in producer Speek’s continued display of melody mastery. So while they may be one of many, the Florida duo’s sound is theirs alone. And as they progress, you’ll hear more about them. Read the rest of this entry »

New Orleans Bounce Music

04.07.10 Written by J. Tinsley

His best days behind him. The label he helped transform to a household name is still just that, only 100 times bigger. But even while focusing on what Juvenile doesn’t have anymore, there is something no one can ever take away – 400 Degreez. In 1998, aside from OutKast, Scarface and Master P, “mainstream” Southern Hip-Hop was, for the most part, nonexistent. With the arrival of Juve’s magnum opus in November of that year, the norm was broken. And it was done by a start up label from the bottom of the map, at that. Read the rest of this entry »

The Trife Life Of Basketball Wives

04.07.10 Written by TC

Let’s get a fact ironed out from jump.

You actually have to be married to be labeled as a “wife.” Technically speaking, a few of the cast members for the latest female setback “Basketball Wives” have never had a ring on it to begin with. And only one is currently still hitched: Tasha Smith Jennifer “Red Carpet” Williams who hooked up with Boston Celtics’ 9th man Eric Williams.

For you a show that’s supposed to focus on the exploitation of the treatment of athletes towards their women, it appears that promise of becoming a reality TV star was too much to pass up. When your claim to fame is getting knocked up by Michael Olowokandi, then yeah…You probably fiend for the limelight more than the paparazzi.

Complaining of loneliness as you drive down Wilshire in a Murciélago or dry your tears with a $2,500 Louis Vuitton scarf. We don’t believe you. You need more people.

Basketball Wives premieres Sunday April 11th on…where else? They should have never gave you bishes money!!!

That being said…

Fabolous – “I’m Raw” Video

04.07.10 Written by Gotty™

Niiiceee!…”

I’m glad Loso made a video for this one because it’s one of my favorites off his TINC2. Wit and wordplay in abundance over a rising beat that garners repeat plays in the whip. It has that “mixtape Fab” feel to it that you often hear guys in oversized tees and fitteds reference. Read the rest of this entry »

The Art Of (Athletic) Storytelling

04.07.10 Written by J. Tinsley

When it comes to sports, those who document them are almost as important as the athletes themselves. For those who are still not in the know, ESPN is the architect behind one of the greatest documentary campaigns ever. Their “30 For 30” series has already produced classics centering around subjects like Len Bias, The University of Miami, the Knicks/Pacers rivalry and even one on the way about the Los Angeles Raiders – narrated by Ice Cube.

But “the worldwide leader in sports” can’t possibly do a documentary on every thought-provoking story that’s happened over the years. Below are seven stories I wouldn’t mind being brought to TV. Pardon the lack of diversity. Read the rest of this entry »
