I have better odds of winning the Daily 5 on an easy pick than catching a brand new SNL at 11:35 p.m. on a Saturday night. So, it’s too bad I didn’t grip a ticket, because after a long day working on projects around the house, I plopped down on the couch and happened to tune into Tina Fey making another miraculous comeback to her old Saturday night stomping grounds. The current Date Night star seemed right at home, carrying the show with roles as a whorish PGA announcer, a school teacher openly infatuated with Justin Beiber, and another spot-on Sarah Palin impersonation. The other day, your boy Lu was in New York rocking a show or something. It seems he had a lot to get off his chest, starting with his shirt. After getting properly naked and comfortable, he began addressing the crowd and doing what cats in the ’80s called “freestyling”. Yes, the real “off-the-dome” type recitals, not these post-Rap-City era pre-written lyrical abortions you see on TV and in concert these days. Read the rest of this entry »
Somewhere between Friday & Saturday, Dãm let this one loose via his Twitter. According to the Ambassador of Boogie Funk, “Paradise” is “17:48 & recorded 2 cassette..on purpose!” The unmastered approach only adds to the appeal, as if you’ve snuck a seat on the studio couch while the man was working at his craft. All in all, grab your favorite refreshment and enjoy the listen. Read the rest of this entry »
I spent a chunk of my day yesterday riding around to some random “new” Vado mixtape that Retro sent me. While it was good, it was basically too much recycled material to keep me satisfied. By night’s end, I was buzzin’ the homie Newz because I wanted an update on Slime Flu. The tempature’s warming, the whip’s windows are coming down so I want new music to accost people with @ red lights & parks. The type of material that makes them stop & acknowledge, then ask “who’s that?” Out of a lot of these artists out right now, Vado has a voice that’s captivating enough to motivate that type of questioning and anticipation.
The best news I got was that Slime Flu was near competition and on the way. Also, it looks as if they’ve already bagged a video to “Large On The Streets,” directed by Arm & Will Pu for FM15 Films. So while there’s been a good bit of buzz surrounding his name as of late, we’re on the brink of hearing a full dosage of his music soon. My senses say that this guy will be able to “all like he John Wall,” just like he professes. For now, we indulge in the short anticipation clip of the vid & patiently wait the wait for the full tape.

VA$HTIE alluded to how a certain “NY anthem” was good, but it didn’t rightly reflect all of what NY’s current reality is and she was right. While the city isn’t the same as its ’80s and ’90s crime-ridden past, it’s not as syrupy sweet as the ode would have you believe. Recent events show that even a whitewashed Times Square isn’t the idyllic tourist attraction it once was since its cleansing.
For a song showcasing the other side, Nasty Nas teams up with everyone’s favorite griot Gil Scott-Heron for the 1200 Squad’s remix of “New York Is Killing Me.” As Nas more accurately states, “it’s foul moods on the average” in the Big Apple, just like in any other city where the inhabitants are straining themselves to make ends meet and watching the city’s negative indicators (crime, depression and unemployment rates) climb. “New York…” is a winding, poetic potent reminder that it’s always best to clutch your purse and keep your wallet in your from pocket when roaming the sidewalks and streets of any city, especially NY. First of all, RCRD LBL is a good site. Fishing around over there for less than 15 minutes, I reeled in three completely different and unique songs from under-appreciated artists I wouldn’t have come across at any of my typical bookmarks, with one specifically standing out to the point where sharing was immediately necessary.
Javelin is a well-oiled two-man machine of melodies from Brooklyn, whose encompassing electronic entity of ’80s R&B and atmospheric attitude have turned HEALTH’s “In Heat” into a sweaty, slow-motion steppers anthem for a new generation of grown and sexy. Laced with smoldering synths, an influential tempo and a quintessential Cameo bass line, this completely organic ascension into serenity should stay holding down the after hours joints from Miami Beach to Bed-Stuy until the sun comes up. Statik Selektah slides in to remix Joell’s “Kawl Me,” redoing it by matching three notable ’90s beats that fit right alongside Joell’s “allow me to look back” lyrics. Read the rest of this entry »
Reggie’s Saturday night delivery via Twitter becomes your Sunday morning blessing…or mess to clean up. Give me the familiar and feisty “Walk & Talk It,” while you keep the meandering “Musik, Money…” Like the lil homie said, everything free doesn’t have to be for me but I do thank thee, Red, for making both available. I know you spend a lot of time in the studio Dre, but what’s up? By your appearance at Fenway on Sunday to peddle your headphones with Jimmy, I’m pretty sure you didn’t think yesterday was April 1st did you? We’ve all come to grips in our own way about whether Detox is fact or fiction, so don’t play with man. Say Detox is coming soon all you want, but don’t give us titles & dates with no intention of following up. We’ll welcome your music with open arms, but until then we’ll find other ways to keep ourselves entertained. Daddy Fat Sacks filled the void pretty nicely this week. Read the rest of this entry »
Can someone please tell me why One Way is rarely mentioned amongst classic R&B groups?
Ever since coping the Detroit-bred band’s Who’s Foolin’ Who vinyl second-hand style back in college, I’ve become enlightened by the group’s garden variety of sample-ready Soul. But, I was wombed up during their prime years due to age. That’s why I’m legitimately curious to hear one of you elder statesman explain why Al Hudson & Co. never got the spins that a Gap Band or Earth, Wind & Fire got, despite displaying an equal amount of radio-ready, yet unheralded jams like “Dynomite,” “Pull Fancy Dancer” and Cedric The Entertainer’s favorite space shuttle serenade, “Cutie Pie.” On top of just crafting hits, their tendency to flip from freak nasty funk to pine-tree sappy has allowed for their music to be reincarnated into the catalogs of half our favorite artists, including Warren G, Too Short, Aaliyah, DJ Quik, Suga Free, WC, Monica and even Gangsta Gibbs.

True to his word, Juse Dayne released the second installment of his Transcend Trilogy earlier this week. Unlike last time, Spaceship Music features the Jersey native over original production from Ryan Griffin, D. Rhodes, Smoke and Dannie Phantom. Best Kept Secret – of Wale’s Attention Deficit fame – also stop by and leave their seal of approval.
To be perfectly honest, upon first hearing the project was titled “Spaceship Music,” images of Yung LA and glitter drenched mohawks instantly polluted the outcome before play was pressed. Thankfully, Juse was nothing of the sort and the entire tape proved to be an enjoyable listen. From the intro, Dayne, excuse me, Jetson, clearly shows poise for catchy one-liners. He’s also no stranger to the opposite sex as he irons his gift of gab over the Michael Jackson sampled “Lady For Tonight.” Read the rest of this entry »
