Hip-Hop has come along way from Kool Herc cutting up breaks for an exclusive group of party-goers at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in The Bronx. It’s no longer taboo for Jeanette the yoga instructor to be rocking out to “Soul Survivor” on her early morning jog; or for Gracie the art teacher at your daughter’s elementary school to be zoning out in the teachers’ lounge to “Shook Ones Pt. 2.”
Fighting Hip-Hop’s progression or the scope of talent pushing it forward is an exercise in futility. Instead of whining about who shouldn’t be participating in this game and pointing out everything wrong with an artist and his or her image, it would be more conducive to welcome those who are genuine in their attempts.
When I read that Kellee Maize — a blonde, white girl from Pennsylvania — decided to follow Hip-Hop as a career path, despite the obvious reasons society says she shouldn’t, she had my ear and mind open. With a vocal sample of Luda’s verse from the “Damn” remix, her song “Start One” quickly drew my attention. Her vocal styling is unique on the chorus; harmonizing over the synthesized audio-candy provided Ricky Skullcrusha. She has a nasally tone with a soulful subtlety. But what separates her from the majority becomes apparent one minute into the song when she begins a double-time flow, attacking the track with a ferocity that isn’t present with many femcees in the game right now. Lyrically she’s a blatant hippie; speaking on peace and love like it was 1966 all over again, with a song structure that is engaging throughout.
I’m not sure what her impact on the game is going to be when all is said and done, but I’m willing to bet she has a decent following if she keeps up with the quality that can be found in this song. She’s got a free download of her latest album, Aligned Archetype, along with some background on it’s creation at her website, KelleeMaize.com.

H/T: Pretty Much Amazing

lady sovereign, is that you?
i hated Lady Sov w/a passion lol.
Lady Sov’s voice made me wanna commit suicide. What will decide if this girl will float or sink is what she brings to the table in terms of Females in Hip-Hop. If she’s gonna be a pretty face with ugh rhyming (Nicki Meeeennnaaajjj), then she won’t last long. However, if she brings that hard-body rhyming with great production (Jean Grae, yall) then I’ll definitely follow her.
I’m personally not feeling the beat of the song, but from what I can gather from the lyrics (and flow) she obviously have some talent.
o_O
The dubstep influence is strong with this one…
Seems to have more in common with MIA and that type of ‘hip-hop influenced’ electro that Kelis is doing at the moment than with more conventionally straight up rappers like Jean Grae or even Nicki Minaj.
not feeling it
For a first impression, I felt it was like a minute too long and I’m not feeling the beat but she can rhyme.
Off topic :Caught the Curren$y and Pac Div show in Dallas last night. Great show from both. But there was this dude named XV out of Kansas and he was rockin the crowd. Anyone heard of him?
Plus there was plenty of beautiful girls there. Always an added plus
@ Cudder. Hell yeah I heard of XV. He makes great music and his near obsession with porn is hilarious.
lets hope she dont fall off and let this misogynistic game change her
I know a blonde white girl who’s pretty decent. Been grinding underground for a long time. She’s pretty hood tho. you know the type.
Sounds like a PG version of Amanda Blank, and I’m sure Kellee’s heard this before coming from the Penn State. Even the production reminds me of Spank Rock.
This proof that TSS is definitely taking some kind of payola. LOL
It’s different, she is in that MIA lane. I don’t love it; but I don’t hate it either.
@ Athrin
Yeah man he was good.I had never heard of him. Had the whole house rockin
THIS
SHIT
IS
HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m a big fan of Kellee’s music. She’s getting a pretty heavy Pittsburgh following now.
This song “Start NONE” (some inconsistencies on the song title throughout this but it is NONE not ONE) is FAR from Kellee’s best. Definitely check out her site/Google her and listen to some more for a better idea of who she is and what she’s all about – I wouldn’t place a verdict just on this track.
Personally, I’d suggest “Yesterday” and “Third Eye” as a few to check out for example. Both really great tracks! Typically her lyrics are pretty creative and deep as well.
RachelA – Auto-save came in and tripped up the previous changes. Your right that it’s “None” and not “One.” Pardon.
Truth be told, there’s more coming from us re: her. She caught a few ears on our side.
I love Kellee’s attitude and music. While it’s not exactly the kind of thing you might hear on a top 40 hip hop station, there’s an apparent skill and intelligence to the way she tackles the verses. It’s nice to hear these kind of lyrics from someone who actually sounds like a real rapper, rather than just some washed out version of one.
Kellee’s music is the future of hip-hop.
i would suggest checking out her website, this song is not the best example of what she’s all about, although it does display her serious flow. don’t worry about her falling off or getting discouraged, the girl is for real. my favs are something sacred, thoughts to thing, and goddette is pretty hard! there may be some similarities on the musicality to amanda blank, etc. but kellee’s message is one of a kind and will set her apart from the rest….
love when she drops it and starts spitin in double time! props
don’t judge this book by her cover
I’m guessing the 5 posts above are her peeps. LOL
been rocking xv for a minute. i’ve got a lot of his stuff

^^^ thats what I was thinking…but hey it’s all good, she’s got people that are backing her up…and she has some talent…that double time in the beginning was kinda dope. And she has a nice lil voice like she could almost be a female Outasight and double it up with the singing and rapping?…yes, maybe?…not sold yet tho…I need to hear more
*dloading that free album*
one of my earlier beats, it is what it is. Kellee is a talented hard working girl.

A biter; how flattering.
…so back to the subject at hand…
only thing I’m not diggin is the beats, I just dotn like the sound of them…and handful are good…but aren’t really catching me…but her flow and her lyrics seem decent enough.
This song is very deep. Gave me chills
one of my earlier beats, it is what it is. Kellee is a talented hard working girl.
^^^
dont take it to heart bro…just show us more so you can win us over.
@Jose
Not sure if I classify as one of “her peeps”, but yeah, I’ve been listening to her since the new album dropped, so it’s not new stuff to me. ;)
say what you want, girl goes hard:

She is the sexiest little thing on earth
This proof that TSS is definitely taking some kind of payola. LOL

If you saw my bank account statement, you would retract this. lol
I just thought she was dope. Obviously, with 33 comments, i’m not alone.

So what are you saying? You got some dome for this? LOL
IF YOURE FROM THE 412 CHECK OUT KELLEE MAIZE CITY OF CHAMPIONS IF YOU WANNA HEAR SOME RIDICULOUS LYRICS OVER A TIGHT ASS DJ HUGGY BEAT
Really deep and thoughtful lyrics. Gotta class system that’s kinda complex / wish I could uncreate this mess
this whole song is about zeitgeist addendum. That ain’t no hippy sh*t
Funny, TSS doesn’t usually suffer from such blatant spam but maybe things are changing…
I just downloaded Aligned Archetype and it’s awesome- what’s so cool is that there is definitely a variety in the songs. they don’t all sound the same like you get from some artists. i’d encourage people to check out her website and listen to a sampling of the songs to truly hear her talent!
Check the progression from her first album, “Age of Feminine”. Kellee started in a good place and has grown exponentially in her writing, performing, and production value. Word to the Mothership!
People will never stop amazing me. The majority of hip-hop fans constantly complain about the female emcees in the game and how theirs no content to their lyrics, WAKE-UP people! This chick is spitting some deep lyrics on this track. Perhaps it’s a little too much for some people to grasp..
P.S. I’m not even a fan of elctro music, but I’m def feelen this track.
I was on the fence at first but decided to do a little more research on Kellee and this chick is the truth! Def gonna keep on eye on her…

Did the whole e-street team show up in the comments or what?
Full fuckin force! lmfao
Somebody throw some of the posters in this thread a life preserver…
Because they just went overboard lol.
Listen, I will always buy into what no one must push me to buy into. That said, you can be fans, but some of you did more harm than good due to transparency.
@sillyhaters
Your comment shows that you are taking absolutely nothing to call anyone out over far to seriously. What I read by way of these comments was in my opinion, no way terrible or overly negative at all. Come back and visit TSS more than when they post an artist you like because then you will see when there truly are “Silly Haters” and when there are none.
If you are a fan of her music… you must develop a thicker skin. Because really, all that it comes down to is whether or not YOU like her – no one else matters.
*far too seriously
kellee maize is the truth! good write up!
heard about kellee maize last month from pigeons and planes … her album got over 200,000 downloads already.
here’s another good article that just came out about her:

I agree with a previous poster. She sorta reminds me of MIA, a little weird but nice style.
I love Kellee Maize, alot of people is sleeping on her but she waking alot of people up to.
the video for this song is one of her best, almost cinematic. this broad just got voted into being considered to perform at bonnaroo. if that shit goes down this girl is going blow up.
