Odd but true, every time the date has been spoken any day in March, my mind involuntarily echoes “March 9th. Is it March 9th?” There are times when I’m disinterested in other “significant” dates/deaths in Hip-Hop’s history but not March 9th. It will forever resonate. Perhaps it was the Canibus’ line that helped give weight to it. Or, it could be the somber realization that we really lost another one. While Pac seemed to embrace an early date with death, Biggie seemed to reference death for art’s sake once he started to see success. When he died, rap was momentarily left without a voice and it took time for the music to redefine itself. Whatever the case, this year the date seems to loom larger in my mind for reasons I can’t quite place.
On today March 8th, I believe the universe stepped in to apply order to my thoughts (electronically of course). Of the many emails I receive daily, the most common question is “will you post this for us?” While we accommodate as many requests as we can, I like to think we’re still selective and true to what we believe in, which is to post material we find interesting on a personal level. Today, this one seemed most fitting and useful for the right now. It’s a stream of Nick Bloomfield’s 2002 documentary, “Biggie and Tupac.” Obviously, we’re fans of the different sides of the entertainment industry catching up with technology so that was one of the reasons for posting this. The good thing is the film is licensed and streaming, courtesy of Snag Films.
The actual documentary is one you may have seen offline, but it’s good to find it available in a quality form online for those who haven’t seen it or for the young yardie trying to gain perspective. The “tu-pack” mispronunciation can be annoying at first, but easy to overlook once the film draws you in with the backstories of both artists, the beef, the inclusion of Russell Poole, the alleged cover up and possible FBI involvement.
As time passes, it takes innovation and commitment to help keep the past relevant. And as time passes, watching Bloomfield’s doc reminds viewers that these two murders that affected our culture greatly, yet remain unsolved years later.
Thanks to Mike @ SnagFilms

You know, I was mad young when Pac and Big passed and since I wasn’t allowed to listen to rap at that age, I never understood the significance of their death. It wasn’t until I grew up from being a Young God (© 5%er) and got deep into rap that I realize their impact on the game. Going back and listening to Pac from an older perspective (19 may not be old, but still gained some wisdom), I can see how big of a voice he was for the black man of that time. That is also what hip-hop lacks these days–a voice for us. Yeah, these dance hits are great and fun for a spin or two, but where is that artist that understands how I feel? Where are the Pac’s and Big’s of the 21st century? In the crowded sea that Rap has become, we no longer have a voice that truly represents us black people. I guess that is because of the social and changes we have gone under and Hip-Hop listened to by people of all walks of life, but I rather not make this comment any longer than it should be.
I will definitely watch this Documentary and absorb every piece of information that it spews out.
sidenote – the beauty of it is you can stop, leave the screen completely and come back to resume where you left off. shit’s brilliant.
I’ve got this DVD, but it’s still one of the better ones I’ve seen on the topic. I know people sometimes get angered when others deaths aren’t made as big of a big of a deal (i.e. Dilla, Pun, Big L and even Eazy E). But truth is, these were the two most polarizing figures this genre has ever seen. It’s crazy because every time I see a documentary on the subject, I have to watch it.
I guess it’s just the fact of wanting to know what ACTUALLY happened. Truthfully, I don’t think we ever will. But it would be nice.
lol @ Biggie’s wristband
This March 9th has loomed over me for awhile as well. Like everyday I got, damn is it the 9th yet? I just remember my dude Eric coming in Church & telling us, then we spent the rest of the service chillin’ in the parking lot playing Ready To Die.
Ready To Die was a damn event album. It parallels The Chronic in terms of scope & breadth of impact & influence.
oh yeah
fuck puffy.
I share the same sentiment towards Mr. Combs. But I do thank him for coming up with Unforgivable. Keeps me smelling good. lol

Great post Gotty! Bigs death was the only rapper that made me cry and i remember where i was. Dude was raw. “my mother got cancer in her breast, dont ask me why im mutherfuckin stressed”
even tho i was deep into rap since i was 6,thanks to my older brother, biggie was the first one that i really latched onto every word, every movement with. he is easily one of the most influential in my musical life.
and for my small homage to the late great, ive got 25 tracks up on my site,http://insideravensmind.net ,some classics, some features. please check it out in celebration of this man’s life and work.

Why all the hate for Sean Combs????????
The Brother is sorely missed. RIP Big
Yea it’s crazy to think it has been 13 years already since BIG’s death! And truth be told I didn’t really feel his impact till later on since I didn’t start listening to Hip-Hop or music really strong like that until I was in about the 7th or 8th grade! Which was around 99 & 2000 at the turn of the last century! I feel you on this 1 having a bigger impact this year to with 13 being a significant # in my life! BIG is truly missed though may he R.I.P.
PS- Thanks for the doc as well to! I will definitely check it when I get a chance!
Man I remember when Biggie died I was in 6th grade, came to school that Monday and we were sitting in music class and I distinctly remember saying to the kid next to me (who was my enemy that I couldn’t stand but knew was a fellow biggie fan) “hey man, you hear Biggie died?” He nodded, then we talked about biggie for awhile, might have been the only time we got along cause even through high school I couldn’t stand dude and fought him a couple of times, but for that brief moment we were on the same page over Biggie’s death.
I remember waking up the morning after Biggie died like it was yesterday. Truly taken away one of the greatest ever. The thing that bothers me the most is that one can only imagine what kind of body of work he would have had if was not killed that night. Tragic…
I tell you this much…. Jay would not be as massive as he is today if it were not for Biggie being murdered.
as much as i am a Pac fan, Biggies death really confused me
I don’t know why so young black men are losing their lives in such tragic incidents, that so many could have avoided if they stopped hating on each other and worked together to celebrate their success.
Thanks for sharing your life with us Mr. Wallace.

THE DAY REAL RAP DIED
@Tinsley– I don’t think Biggie was polarizing at all. Some ignorant people only hated him because Pac and Death Row picked on him to sell records.
BTW, I’m not a fan of Puffy’s approach to music but I would never curse him… can someone explain the hate? You guys are fooling yourselves if you think Biggy would have rose to the top of the rap game without him. Not a shot at a Big, but Puffy’s role in helping him break through and ensuring he had the right type of beats and songs cannot be overstated. So I just think it’s a really weird time to dis Puff, imo.
Is it apparent to others the naked hate in the eyes of these babo*ns??
Only in American can uneducated white-hating thugs be idolized and held as role models as they chant racist, anti-society rhetoric (look it up if the word is too big for you).
Each time one of these tribal sloths pours his pathetic slander to the world, ever notice that there is always a gathering of other babo*ns behind him, reminicent of flies feasting on a new dropping of sh*t?
The whole Bad Boy era was an exciting one. My boy worked on the BMG street team and had product for days! Biggie is iconic but without Puffs contributions and fine tuning who knows if we’d ever hear dude. It’s crazy how now you need to have a gimmick to break a artist. What happened to just being nice? Ready to die and Life after death are still soundtracks to my life. B.I.G Forever!
Jesus, you people are writing like this fuck heads were talented or something.
Rap is nothing more than jungle noise put to a stolen cheap drum machine beat.
All rappers need to kill each other off so music can get back to being sensible and entertaining.
Heh. Who let the Young Nazi Association on the site, man?
Same could be said for rock lol. ^^(John)
Misunderstanding fuck.
damn great vid i hope these murders will get solved end i hope suge knight gets life detention!
R.I.P.
B.I.G. & TuPac
Fuck All Y’all
I really miss Biggie. Truly was the greatest of all time and was robbed of his title by being taken from us at such a young age. Same with Tupac.
Also, @John and boboj:
Why the fuck did you even bother reading this article and posting a comment about it if you don’t even like rap in general (which by the way is a lot more than just tribal sloths pouring their pathetic slander to the beat of a cheap drum machine set.) Go back to your fucking rock and roll or whatever it is you listen to, which is SO much more entertaining and civilized than rap right? Dumb fucks.
