“To my fans: You all know that my life isn’t perfect. I am going through some very tough times right now, like I am sure that we all do from time to time. However, I will stand tall like always with “rhino” thick skin. Even though I have become used to hearing people say things about me that aren’t true, it still hurts. I encourage you to continue your ongoing support and I want you to trust that this is another obstacle in my life that, with God’s help I will overcome. God Bless You All.” – Allen Iverson
The most powerful drugs are the ones you only experience once. For those who (un)lucky enough to attain it, once fame is gone, it’s gone forever. All you can do is just hope your high lasts longer than the next man’s. Watching celebrities, many of whom are role models willingly or not, “come down” off that high is never easy. In some cases, it’s downright painful. We’ve all admired someone outside of our family, whether they be a musician, athlete, politician or activist. For myself, it was always Michael Jordan. For so many others I grew up with, Allen Iverson was that guy.
There’s no need to run through his athletic catalog, we’ve done that before. Figuring out where he ranks all-time? The experts are better equip to answer that. You see, I remember the days of high school when the main debates at the lunch table were either about basketball or rap music. When you’re in high school, not much else matters. I was never his biggest supporter, although I knew his talent was only bestowed upon him by a higher power. Then again, I was never his biggest detractor either, although there were parts of his game which I didn’t care for.
Looking back, the guy was one of the most polarizing figures of my generation. We all loved Jordan, but for people around my age, Iverson is someone we grew up with. We saw “the Jordan crossover” just like we heard the hardships throughout his life. My generation embraced it all, the ups and downs. This was the same person who had guys wearing socks on their arm during pick up games mimicking the sleeve he wore like a badge of honor. Or donning cornrows just because females thought #3 was “cute” with them. That’s power man. But it’s power which is often the fall to any empire.
At some point, that same power A.I. used in his favor caught up with him. That power allegedly presented itself in the form of gambling and alcohol addiction. Now, with a career basically over, a marriage already half way there and inevitable alimony and child support charges for five children, his future is about as certain as the ankles of those who once guarded him. I blame Iverson for what his life has come to and not preparing for life after basketball. But, like Michael Jackson, I also question those in concert with him. Different celebrity, same outcome. The more famous one becomes, the less true friends they have in their inner circle. Where was this concern when dude was throwing his life away in casinos or with a bottle? Where were his friends when he was buying out bars? At this point, who cares? It’s all hindsight now.
Knowing now, what we didn’t know a few weeks ago, those tears he shed mean so much more. He probably knew these troubles were on the verge of transitioning from private matters to public spectacles. “The Answer” wasn’t crying only because he was back in Philly. Nah, not even. He was crying because basketball was his only retreat from real life. The story defining Allen Iverson isn’t uncommon though. It’s probably thousands of stories like this happening across the country, A.I.’s profession just sets him apart. Still, it doesn’t make the situation less tragic. Looking at the legacy and aura that is Bubba Chuck, dominance and heart have allowed him to clear most hurdles since he stepped on Georgetown’s campus nearly two decades ago.
He’s went toe-to-toe with Kobe, while out dueling Vince Carter when he was “Half Man, Half Amazing.” He even immortalized Tyronn Lue, with one step. Not to mention, Allen’s been the source of many a headache for opposing teams and coaches for years. It’s just crazy to realize he’s now facing a defensive attack no one has ever truly figured out: life.

Easily one of the top-5 “little guy” ballers of all-time along with Zeke, Stockton (don’t hate), CP3 (yes already), and KJ.
At this point the only person that can truly help AI is AI. Yeah, he’ll need proper support and the right people (coach Thompson) to be there for him, but they can only do so much. In the end, only AI can better AI if that’s what he truly wants, he’s a grown ass 35 year old man and not just some kid. For his sake, I hope he has the wisdom, maturity, and discipline he’ll need to overcome and stop himself from falling into the abyss. I also hope he’s financially stable enough to adjust now that the big paydays are gone, he’s made about $200 million on basketball contracts alone. Would be a damn shame if he became another statistic for bankrupt ex-ballers.
“Either you’re slingin’ crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot …”
not everybody loved jordan…
but yeah, iverson had everybody rocking cornrows…for four years i was one of those cats. im lucky that i had a girlfriend who could do every intricate style he had…so i never had to pay…BOW BOW.
but yeah…im hoping cuz can get it together. every time i read something in the paper about cuz…i hear a story minutes later about how he was in one of the clubs down here ballin outta control.
I was at that all-star game in DC. I think it was probably the height of AI’s career when he won MVP of the all start game and regular season MVP. It’s wild to think how far he’s fallen. But I hope this somehow becomes a cautionary tale.
By the way…that was the greatest all star game ever
life is what you make it.
Always been a huge fan. Seeing alcoholism and gambling addiction way too much in my time on this earth I’ll pray for him.

Famous words from someone who had Jordan beat up on his favorite team too much. You don’t have to love him,… but you respect him
I bet you got some jordans in your closet right now. lol

I’m not a fan,… but I don’t feel like dude should go through this. He got caught up in the life… it happens way to much.
Damn I remember watching that All Star Game. By far the best one I’ve seen. I just recall it being so many Iverson fans at my high school. Male and female. He was everything to some people, from his attitude, to his game to his whole stance in pop culture at that time.
It always sucks to see someone you remembering watching when you were younger get slapped by life so hard. If he really has to pay alimony and child support for his five kids, man oh man, I don’t even want to imagine what that’s like.
LOL, my fault Mo’. I’m just a bias, blind Jordan fan.
^ I went to Old Dominion with a lot of folks that went to high school with Chuck. Some of the cats used to play their old game tapes in the dorm. You cannot question dudes talent. He hooped.
POPPA BEEN SMOOTH SINCE DAYS OF UNDEROOS
i remembering hearing somewhere that AI had a “life-time contract” w/ Reebok.. so was that just life meaning basketball life. its a damn shame if this dude end up broke and w/ no one to help him in life.
^ I remember hearing something like that too… good question.
To say everybody doesn’t like Jordan is obviously true, but I think MJ is one of the most beloved NBA icons EVER and I say this as a diehard Hawks fan. As for AI, I was never really a fan of his, but it’s sad to see the mix of alcohol & gambling potentially destroy another talented & gifted black athlete.

My patna was telling me that last night. He wasn’t sure if the contract was for the duration of his basketball career, or life period. I do know he’s made over $200M in his career though.
I remember game 1 of the 01 Finals against my Lakers, it was my senior year in High School. He was a beast. When he stepped over Lue after hitting that shot I had to change the channel. But he was more than just a scorer, he was a brand (who didn’t own a pair of the those honey comb AI’s)….. I pray it gets better for him.

As I understand it. He gets something like 5-7 mill for every season that he plays. I think to just give him money for just being alive is ridiculous and they’d probably put a hit out on his lil ass after his departure.
IF I GOTTA CHOOSE A COAST I GOTS TO PICK THE EAST. I LIVE OUT THERE SO DONT DO THERE!

great story, sad story…always be a nba legend in my book tho.
excellent piece… good job, A.I. is to Michael Jordan, what Jadakiss is to Biggie in my eyes, never got the recognition for how truly talented he is but always kept it real and did things his way, coulda won more and made some better decisions and if he had a better team around him who knows what woulda happened but he came hard every time no homo…
LOL @ LoSo
Wow, Tins that’s heartfelt.
It’s a sad situation. I’m not gonna make excuses for him. I know that he is a grown ass man. I know that at 35 he needs to take responsibility for his actions. But when you think about it, as a star athlete, he probably never got any kind of proper guidance in life off the court. He always got a pass on account of his talent and abilities on the court.
Think about that dude in your english class in 11th grade. Now think about the dude in your sociology class during your junior year in college. (Un)Luckily, those guys had their reality check early in life. Hopefully they had the chance to get their lives straight (Old folks always used to tell us about having something to fall back on). But for those who do fall in that fraction that makes it to the pros (what is it like less than 5%), there is no preparation for life after the game.
Can you imagine being the dude who tried to tell AI to cool it when he was paying for everything when you guys went to Atlantic City? Or trying to be the dude who’s telling him to slow down on the drinks when he was yakking it up in the ATL? Hell no. So cats would just sit back and let it happen.
Surely he did most of it himself, but as Tins says, “the more famous one becomes, the less true friends they have in their inner circle.”
Here’s a piece on someone whom I went to high school with.

yeah i said it (first)
Oh Allen. I want to feel bad for you.
But I don’t.
J-Tins gettin his LC on.
Seriously, tho. Good piece. Really good stuff, mang.
For my money AI’s the greatest NBA scorer in the last 30 years. Better than Jordan, Bird, magic, Kobe, Vince, Shaq, hakeem, Mailman…
Why?
Cuz dude was on 5’11 and a mediocre jumpshooter.
You knew AI was going to the bucket. He wasn’t gonna post anyone up; he wasn’t shooting fadeaways… he wasn’t senaking around the baseline waiting for an assist. Nope. He was going to bring the ball up court from about 80 feet back. then he was gonna size up his man and go straight to the bucket.
Straight. To. The. Rack.
And you wasn’t gonna stop him.
He broke down everybody. Everybody. I mean, E’reee…. baaah-dee!
he broke ankles like osteoporosis.
anyway… hope dude gets help.

Great write up, Iverson is my dude. Im sure he can get over this. But his wife is about to take him to the bank.
I wasn’t the biggest AI supporter coming up but you had to respect him as a scorer: even with a “suspect” jump shot. It’s not like anyone else on those philly squads consistently chipped in offensively as suitable secondary options. Hopefully he can see through all these negative things going on in his life somehow.
He broke down everybody. Everybody. I mean, E’reee…. baaah-dee!
he broke ankles like osteoporosis.

@ Minor injuries…please don’t transcribe the lyrics to a song u don’t know the words too…thx
ahahhahahaha, at Petey. word up that neazy minor injuries said welcome to my placenta. Good catch
And homey that said “break ankles like osteoporosis” needs to start writing rhymes if that’s his bar. Made me say ooooh. If it was I tape I would’ve hit rewind just for that bar. On the other hand please allow 99% of all these bum rappers to retire to clear up some space for you to breathe
Tins, good write-up.
I’m inclined to say
those Reeboks, the Questions > those Jordans
One of the most electrifying players of the current NBA generation. Being from VA its even more sad to see him like this and painful to watch a once dazzling player lumber around the court like a wounded dog who needs to be put down. Something about the athletes from the 757, so much talent and yet they all seem to fuck it up somehow.
God bless him. AI got himself into this, but like other people said, he probably always got a “free pass” for things because of his talent, and he never had guidance off the court. I’m gonna pray for him, and everybody should. Lets pray he gets his problems together and has Jesus instead of continuing to spiral downward. Love you forever AI :)
i always hated jordan. he was tiger before tiger. a brilliant athlete, fantastic adman, but ultimately a hollow human being. his legacy is overpaid, dribble-drive, bonus babies and a broken nba.
i’ve always been a “f@#k you hero” kind of guy and ai fit that mold to a t.
ai was always about realness. i respect that.
my thoughts are with him and his family.
Honestly, I think you should be ashamed for writing this piece. It’s writing like this which makes me hate the fact that anybody with a computer can put something like this on the internet.
We’ve all seen that AI’s been having personal issues. It’s not a secret now and it wasn’t a secret in the past. Fact of the matter is though, that his problems are just that, they’re personal. They’re no one else’s business but AI’s and his family’s.
How many times have you been amazed by one of AI’s shakes? How many times have you jumped off the couch because he scored another impossible bucket? AI wowed us for over a decade. He’s undoubtedly one of the best guards who’s ever played the game. I mean, the guy carried a terrible Sixers team to the finals on his back and his back alone. How many guards were able to take the kind of punishment AI laid on his body and pick himself up every time without a word only to come back down the floor to score and take our collective breaths away again.
Point is, as consumers we expect a consistent product every night. We watch sports because we want to see and experience moments like the ones AI gave us night in and night out. It’s incredible that this is the appreciation he gets from the public when his life is in crisis. Rather than reaching out to help him, the press has all been negative and the sports public eats it all up.
Maybe people should take the time to appreciate AI and put him in their thoughts. Consider how different the game of basketball and the NBA would be if AI had never been there. It’s time for people to stop rehashing all of AI’s problems and leave the guy alone.
And by the way…a report came out earlier this afternoon reading that all of the stuff written by Stephen A. Smith was exaggerated by the report written by Smith himself. An anonymous NBA player came out and vouched for Iverson and spoke out against the demonizing of Iverson in the media.
I’m not trying to ride a high horse or anything, but it really bothers me to see the treatment of athletes like this. They deserve better than love me today hate me tomorrow.
@SC
You seem upset. It’s cool. Just chill. Pull one sentence in here where I degraded Iverson. I even said “allegedy.” If anything, I reflected what you said in the fact that I was upset dude was going through tough times like this. You may wanna read again.
great piece. It’s disappointing to see all this happen to him.
