Usher Feat. Nicki Minaj – “Lil Freak” Video

03.29.10 Written by TC

At this rate, Lil’ Nicki will have very lil’ use for making a song of her own. The checks for hopping on her fellow artists lead singles and getting RuPauled up for the videos, should keep her bills paid and her ability to tour moderate-sized venues until she has enough songs to release a Featuring Nicki Minaj album. And in hindsight, wouldn’t it make more sense for her to be the co-star in Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” video? Read the rest of this entry »

Vado – “Kick In Tha Door”

03.28.10 Written by Gotty™

“…Gun jam, can’t squeeze? Then throw bottles
Sixteen, take away three, it’s no problem.
You know Vado. I don’t talk, I just move
Wit’ the right dudes that old school like ‘Krush Groove’
For Kurtis Blow, I run in your house and bust tools,
Look in every room for Rick Rub & Russ too
.”

In a backroom in heaven, even Big is saying how nice this Vado kid is with the wordplay and delivery. The Slime Flu mixtape, coming soon. Read the rest of this entry »

Vado – “Fed Story” Video

03.28.10 Written by Gotty™

Perhaps the shoddiest video I’ve seen in a while. It’s foggy as if they shot it using a “Wonder Years” camera and baggin’ up psuedo coke while rhyming about Pyrex pot dreams are mid-90s as it gets. But I watched & listened because Vado’s reminiscent of a young Shyne in mannerisms & approach. Slimmmeee! Read the rest of this entry »

DJ Shadow – “Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain”

03.28.10 Written by Patrick M.

As humans we are in some way musical creatures in that music can manipulate our emotions and make us respond. A great song augments and becomes a part of your experiences, whether its dealing with difficult situations like love and death or just helping you overcome the smell of the guy next to you on the train. When you connect with a song, it can be its own escape or memory. Read the rest of this entry »

Country Rhythm, City Blues

03.28.10 Written by Gotty™

Artwork by Tech Supreme

My guy Zo has an uncanny knack for taking unheralded artists and creating compilations for them that their music seem as if the whole world has been in a slumber regarding their talent. A few weeks ago, he hit me up asking if we would post it if he put together a compilation on G-Unit artist Governor. Knowing his meticulous process for selection of artists and mp3s, I didn’t think twice.

The words below belong to Zo.

Governor is a primary candidate to win the “Most-Connected Artist You Never Heard Of” award. From working with 50 Cent before the Get Rich or Die Trying era to Wyclef Jean to T.I. to Dr. Dre to Tom Jones, the singer named Governor [born Governor Washington, Jr.] has engaged in several partnerships with successful artists. Still, he is far from a household name – even within the most hardcore R&B circles, online or off.

Describing his own lane as “soul folk,” Governor’s music blends the classic soul stylings of Sam Cooke and Al Green with a hard yet conscious hip-hop attitude mixing the minds of pre-Death Row Tupac and, in a sense, Death Row Tupac. The Country Rhythm, City Blues mixtape serves as a showcase of Governor’s numerous collaborations plus rare tracks, blends, remixes, and guest appearances which all come together to bring Governor’s voice into the light. Sporting heavyweight sounds throughout, the mixtapes features production credits from the likes of Dr. Dre, Wyclef, Track Masters, Just Blaze, Scott Storch, Mannie Fresh, and Khao.

Most recently heard on 50 Cent’s latest single, “Do You Think About Me,” Governor will be dropping a new album in 2010.”

TSS 2010 March Madness Preview: Elite Eight – Day Two

Four teams. Two spots.  With the Mountaineers & Bulldogs awaiting their foes in the Final Four, it’s time to start coming to the realization that this magical ride is almost over.  At this point, you can pretty much throw statistics out the window and the only thing to expect is the unexpected. “Storm”

03.28.10 Written by K1NG

Trying to find a way to introduce the music of a group with the name Godspeed You! Black Emperor would probably not seem like such a difficult task to complete considering their name already sparks curiosity by itself. The problem is that their name is not the only elongated aspect of their artistic presentation, with most of their songs stretching past the 20 minute mark. Read the rest of this entry »

Surf Club’s Come Up

03.28.10 Written by J. Tinsley

Point blank period, this thing slaps. It’s really no other way I can describe it. When possible, it’s always a stand up act to show love to people who’ve often reciprocated the gesture. Such is the case with Surf Club. Along with “Mr. Everything,” otherwise known as Don Cannon (producer, DJ and professional shit talker), Chili Chil is gearing up for the release of his debut project, Cold World, set to drop this spring.

The first leak, “Ride The Bike,” finds Chil rhyming over a trunk ready instrumental he actually produced himself. Honestly, it reminds me of that Young Buck “Get Buck” beat, so if you’ve ever listened to that outside of computer speakers, you already know how crazy that was. Pretty much the same thing on this track plus the addition of Chil’s unique voice which make for an interesting listen to say the least.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download – Chili Chil – “Ride The Bike”

Bonus: Chase N. Cashe and Hit Boy provide a step-by-step manual to the making of their Grammy-performed record, “Drop The World.”

How about a little animated short film for your weekend entertainment? Even If We Lose, We Still Win

03.27.10 Written by Gotty™

I’ve seen these pictures from the set of Nicki’s upcoming “Massive Attack” video shoot and the impure thoughts have outweighed any worthwhile words I could feign about actually “anticipating” one of her videos for the actual music. Really, I think I’ll skip the video because these stills are enough, seeing her, Amber and all those hams in one photograph. But it left me with one question that seemed worthy of posing for everyone to weigh in on. Read the rest of this entry »

Miike Snow – “Animal (The Punks Jump Up Remix)”

03.27.10 Written by Beware

If you want to give your neck a workout, listen to The Punks Jump Up remix to Miike Snow’s “Animal.” I have no idea when this room rocker came out, or what album it made better, let alone what an honest idea of who Miike Snow even is. But I do know this song is the whip, so your questions don’t even matter. Since I had it passed on to me under that pretense, I’m now handing it off to you the same way. Do your best Napoleon Dynamite, get down and stay up all night. Enjoy yourself. It is the weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

The Week That Was: The Back To The Grind Edition

03.27.10 Written by MZ

While some of the crew came back from Austin rejuvenated, full of vim and vigor and ready to write.  Others returned needing  a vacation to recuperate from vacation.  I fell sorely in the latter category and have been using SXSW as my crutch for everything from crummy NCAA picks to waking up late for work.  Nonetheless, we buckled down and knocked out a pretty good week if I don’t say so myself.
