“Damn, I Made It…”

03.09.10 Written by J. Tinsley

“But still I’m on the grind like some bad brakes/ Cause I remember the time I was last place…”

Damn it feels good to see people up on it. Seems like the summer of 2004 was yesterday and Trey’s Young & Heartless mixtapes were all over the tri-state. Unlike NYC or L.A., Petersburg, Virginia, isn’t exactly known for its musical history. A R&B singer taking the Hip-Hop approach by jumping over industry cuts wasn’t the norm, but Trey sounded at home doing this. Read the rest of this entry »

KiD CuDi Feat. MGMT & RATATAT – “Pursuit Of Happiness” Alternate Video

03.09.10 Written by TC

Since the OG version is a bit timely with the New Year’s theme, this version of CuDi’s classical anthem should hold up better throughout the year. The gothic and morbid visuals actually match up to the lyrics of the song. It appears to be a first cousin to Kanye’s “Coldest Winter” minus the fact that the song’s artist has the nerve to be in their own video. Read the rest of this entry »

Starlito’s A Renaissance Man

03.09.10 Written by Gotty™

On Friday night, I had one of those family emergencies that set off a whirlwind of activity, one of the keys components being a five hour drive that started @ approximately 10pm. After an exhausting day, it was the last thing I wanted to do, but it’s family. What it did afford me was plenty of time to catch up on my listening.

I didn’t manage to cover much material though, because I got stuck on Starlito and Burn One’s Renaissance Gangster. When I swiped @ Star’s lack of cohesion in recent projects, I meant it yet I assume the emcee knew he had a trump up his sleeve with this project. For everything earlier mixtapes lacked, Renaissance… made up for it, greatly assisted by Burn One assuming full production duties and the thematic approach taken lyrically.

Over the past few years I’ve learned that it’s key to overlook the leaks and wait to see how a song fits into the context of the album. “Tired Of Being Tired” and “Alright” both stand well alone. But once placed side-by-side with the rest of Renaissance…, they prove to be key puzzle pieces that reflect the tone and content of the whole release.

While pulling one track won’t sell the project, I understand that you need audio proof. For purists, “What Was I Thinkin’” is Starlito’s lyrical exhibition, reminiscent of his early 2-3 zone joints by Burn’s selection of David Porter’s oft-sampled Stax hit to provide the foundation.

Solange – “Under Construction”

03.09.10 Written by Gotty™

While the paparazzi and most keep their eyes focused on the other Knowles daughter, the more entertaining one is quietly cultivating her own niche. Trust me on this. She’ll never been a megastar and will always carry the footnote of being “Beyonce’s sister.” Nevertheless, Solange’s move to establish herself, embracing fans (specifically online) and explore her creativity in front of her newly found audience has created a greater appreciation for who and what she is, rather than isn’t.

That’s “Under Construction,” a rough mix that she gave away via her site on Friday. Couple it with the wonderful Dirty Projectors’ cover, “Stillness Is The Move,” there’s enough there to merit anticipation for her as yet untitled, third studio album. Read the rest of this entry »

When Answers Turn Into Questions

03.09.10 Written by J. Tinsley

“To my fans: You all know that my life isn’t perfect. I am going through some very tough times right now, like I am sure that we all do from time to time. However, I will stand tall like always with “rhino” thick skin. Even though I have become used to hearing people say things about me that aren’t true, it still hurts. I encourage you to continue your ongoing support and I want you to trust that this is another obstacle in my life that, with God’s help I will overcome. God Bless You All.”Allen Iverson

The most powerful drugs are the ones you only experience once. For those who (un)lucky enough to attain it, once fame is gone, it’s gone forever. All you can do is just hope your high lasts longer than the next man’s. Watching celebrities, many of whom are role models willingly or not, “come down” off that high is never easy. In some cases, it’s downright painful. We’ve all admired someone outside of our family, whether they be a musician, athlete, politician or activist. For myself, it was always Michael Jordan. For so many others I grew up with, Allen Iverson was that guy.

There’s no need to run through his athletic catalog, we’ve done that before. Figuring out where he ranks all-time? The experts are better equip to answer that. You see, I remember the days of high school when the main debates at the lunch table were either about basketball or rap music. When you’re in high school, not much else matters. I was never his biggest supporter, although I knew his talent was only bestowed upon him by a higher power. Then again, I was never his biggest detractor either, although there were parts of his game which I didn’t care for.

Looking back, the guy was one of the most polarizing figures of my generation. We all loved Jordan, but for people around my age, Iverson is someone we grew up with. We saw “the Jordan crossover” just like we heard the hardships throughout his life. My generation embraced it all, the ups and downs. This was the same person who had guys wearing socks on their arm during pick up games mimicking the sleeve he wore like a badge of honor. Or donning cornrows just because females thought #3 was “cute” with them. That’s power man. But it’s power which is often the fall to any empire.

At some point, that same power A.I. used in his favor caught up with him. That power allegedly presented itself in the form of gambling and alcohol addiction. Now, with a career basically over, a marriage already half way there and inevitable alimony and child support charges for five children, his future is about as certain as the ankles of those who once guarded him. I blame Iverson for what his life has come to and not preparing for life after basketball. But, like Michael Jackson, I also question those in concert with him. Different celebrity, same outcome. The more famous one becomes, the less true friends they have in their inner circle. Where was this concern when dude was throwing his life away in casinos or with a bottle? Where were his friends when he was buying out bars? At this point, who cares? It’s all hindsight now.

Knowing now, what we didn’t know a few weeks ago, those tears he shed mean so much more. He probably knew these troubles were on the verge of transitioning from private matters to public spectacles. “The Answer” wasn’t crying only because he was back in Philly. Nah, not even. He was crying because basketball was his only retreat from real life. The story defining Allen Iverson isn’t uncommon though. It’s probably thousands of stories like this happening across the country, A.I.’s profession just sets him apart. Still, it doesn’t make the situation less tragic. Looking at the legacy and aura that is Bubba Chuck, dominance and heart have allowed him to clear most hurdles since he stepped on Georgetown’s campus nearly two decades ago.

He’s went toe-to-toe with Kobe, while out dueling Vince Carter when he was “Half Man, Half Amazing.” He even immortalized Tyronn Lue, with one step. Not to mention, Allen’s been the source of many a headache for opposing teams and coaches for years. It’s just crazy to realize he’s now facing a defensive attack no one has ever truly figured out: life.

Nipsey Hussle – “The Hussle” Video

03.09.10 Written by Beware

I’m not 100% familiar with 100% of Hussle’s material, but I’d say it’s a safe bet that this DanTheMan-handled RadioPlanet Quikvid portrays Neighborhood Nip exactly the way he portrays himself. A guy who’s laid back with an attitude when necessary. One who appears overly aged and apathetic alike from having seen more in his 20-odd years than most see in their entire lives.

At 1:28, this may as well be Nipsey’s elevator pitch.

An extremely dope, Cookin-Soul-produced elevator pitch, at that.

Jay-Z x J. Cole Perform “A Star Is Born” In The Tar Heel State

We like quality footage. We also like J. Cole, the “lil broke nigga from the Ville.” Both are reasons why we post this footage of Jay and his protege J. performing “A Star Is Born” during The BP3 tour’s stop in Greensboro, NC. The only thing essential that’s missing is the crowd noise because there’s nothing like a packed arena hand-clapping in unison during that chorus. Read the rest of this entry »

Remembering March 9th

03.08.10 Written by Gotty™

Odd but true, every time the date has been spoken any day in March, my mind involuntarily echoes “March 9th. Is it March 9th?” There are times when I’m disinterested in other “significant” dates/deaths in Hip-Hop’s history but not March 9th. It will forever resonate. Perhaps it was the Canibus’ line that helped give weight to it. Or, it could be the somber realization that we really lost another one. While Pac seemed to embrace an early date with death, Biggie seemed to reference death for art’s sake once he started to see success. When he died, rap was momentarily left without a voice and it took time for the music to redefine itself. Whatever the case, this year the date seems to loom larger in my mind for reasons I can’t quite place.

On today March 8th, I believe the universe stepped in to apply order to my thoughts (electronically of course). Of the many emails I receive daily, the most common question is “will you post this for us?” While we accommodate as many requests as we can, I like to think we’re still selective and true to what we believe in, which is to post material we find interesting on a personal level. Today, this one seemed most fitting and useful for the right now. It’s a stream of Nick Bloomfield’s 2002 documentary, “Biggie and Tupac.” Obviously, we’re fans of the different sides of the entertainment industry catching up with technology so that was one of the reasons for posting this. The good thing is the film is licensed and streaming, courtesy of Snag Films.

The actual documentary is one you may have seen offline, but it’s good to find it available in a quality form online for those who haven’t seen it or for the young yardie trying to gain perspective. The “tu-pack” mispronunciation can be annoying at first, but easy to overlook once the film draws you in with the backstories of both artists, the beef, the inclusion of Russell Poole, the alleged cover up and possible FBI involvement.

As time passes, it takes innovation and commitment to help keep the past relevant. And as time passes, watching Bloomfield’s doc reminds viewers that these two murders that affected our culture greatly, yet remain unsolved years later.

Thanks to Mike @ SnagFilms
