True story, Ronnie Fieg was one of two people I wanted to be last year (if I weren’t busy being me). As the head buyer for footwear retailer David Z, Ronnie’s obviously a forward thinker and a cat who’s always simultaneously looking ahead & reflecting back, doing both in an effort to inspire what he does daily. If you never heard of the frontman to the band Thin Lizzy, you probably heard their signature hit, “The Boys Are Back In Town.” This is the same song blasted at sporting events and now raped for ads and movie scores. But did you know the dude strumming the bass and wailing out the words was an Irish Black guy? Lynott is considered one of the greatest Rock musicians from the emerald Isle (Fuck Bono). – Label just says “f#ck it” and gives this same rapper from Gary, Indiana a pink slip, a peanut butter sandwich and bus ticket and tells him “good luck.”
– This same rapper creates a following of his own and is quickly becoming one of Hip-Hop’s most talked about new MC’s.

I’m starting to realize that “New York rap” could make a return to relevance without relying on overt gimmicks and arrogant loudmouths, constantly proclaiming the city’s rebound. There’s no “king,” as all of those guys have either gotten rich or been usurped by their once loyal supporters. Instead, there’s minor movement being built on the backs of commoners. A motley mix scene vets, been-around-the-block producers, beatniks, label castoffs and transplants, all assuming an avant-garde stance dedicated to reviving not only NY’s sound, by reshaping what we’ve all been subjected to for some time. You won’t hear any squabbles from me about this shift in video making since club scenes and blue screens are looking staler by the day. It’s never a good thing when you place two people in the same room that have to pretend to like each other. And like clockwork, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras verified this at an event that was supposed to benefit victims of the Haiti earthquake.
