The iPod for Generation Y is like the Walkman times a hundred, thousand trillion. The ability to have thousands of songs (depending on the model) at your disposal, coupled with an iconic design and aggressively trendy ad campaign helped catapult the device to cultural icon status. Music was all we needed on the go for much of the last decade; everything else was an added plus.
As the decade wrapped we saw a convergence in media devices. Portable music playback couldn’t get much better for the majority of consumers and it was time to evolve in order to keep sales moving.
Sam Machkovech broke it down recently in an article for The Atlantic:
“Music consumption lays forever changed in the iPod’s wake; no 8-year storm could have so much impact again, especially since its biggest result is that every pocket-sized device now comes with MP3 playback. The idea of holding a cell phone in one hand and a music player in the other will become an antiquated laugh soon enough.”
We’re participating in a competitive consumer tech market where the best handhelds do a little bit of everything. The days of just playing music, videos and podcasts are over for millions and those numbers are constantly growing. Hell, the smart phone market is already doing damage to MP3 players & handheld camcorders are gaining popularity as portable gaming devices.
And with that said, I have disagree with Mr. Machkovech in regards to attaching every last function to a phone, at least for the time being. There are still popular devices for people who want to leave the handset out of the equation. Thing is, they do pretty much everything else under the sun. Newer personal media players like the iPod Touch and Zune HD are the most popular candidates in providing music, videos, apps, games and wi-fi internet access all in one device. The PSP and DSi, gaming hand helds first and foremost, moonlight as portable media devices but arguably aren’t as slick in their interface and utility as the aforementioned chalk horses.
Portable media players are seeing the same fate that cell phones met in the advent of the smart phone. Their functionality trickled down into the average joe schmoe sphere in the form of the iPhone, various Blackberry® models, Palm Pre and Nexus One. Now people can’t get enough of them. As sales climb for these do-it-all machines, the geek in me will be intrigued to see what will happen next. Personally speaking, it’d seem backward to roll with a iPod classic when my ill-used 5g iPod finally gives out.

Sometimes I’m on the bus/train and I have to put my phone down for a second so I can switch a song or turn down the sound on my iTouch.
And I feel like a complete douche while I’m doing it.
Don’t feel like a douche Amp, I have NO music on my iPhone!!! I still use my Sony 8GB mp3/video player for music because it has superb sound quality (i’m an audiophile geek!), and I use my jail-broken iPhone to watch/download music videos off of Youtube.(There’s an app that let’s you download videos into your phone off of Youtube, permanently! Saves you $$$ on your data usage; why stream when you can KEEP the video!)
the smart phone has the option to turn the phone(call services) off while still playing music and staying connected to the internet, like i use it most of the time. fuck anything that starts with an i.. strickly bad experiences when you have 30000+ songs and itunes decides to put an ! next to over 20000 songs and they all magically dissapear and all the i people can tell you is download it again , like my time has no value.. nexT!!.. 0ne
mixtube, cycorder >>>>>
if anything iphones are douchier… but an android would be nice
*Ahem*…iPHONE FUCKING RULES!!!! That is all…
Who has a Droid? Experiences? Don’t give me that “it’s the greatest device ever!” speech lol. Give me true pros & cons. I’m a BB diehard but I need something more robust for handling the web.
Plus I like a keyboard &, if I’m not mistaken, Droids are a combination of touch & pull-out screen, no?
I’ve always got my phone & either Touch/iPod on me at all time. And I like their separate uses. The only thing I don both is get on the internet.
@gotty
I know people who use the android phones like the htc but nobody that uses the droid specifically. I would say that the people I know using androids like the app selection but most either would rather have or have switched to the iphone. I use the pre and I love it but the app selection isn’t the best. Once verizon gets their marketing plan straight for the pre then more people will adopt it making more higher quality apps.
In summation, I’ve heard good things about android phones but really would suggest the pre once better apps come through. I would also say that the pre has the best sound quality between it and the htc and the iphone. Still, I haven’t used the droid personally.
Gotty,
I’m a G1 dude… The 1st version of Android’s G phone. I like it.
PROS:
G1 is google-based, so you gotta link your gmail to it, which is fine for me as i fwd lots of other accts to it for easier access. But you can use POPmail and set up a another email acct on it.
Buttons, baby!
I need buttons so i love the G1′s slip-out keypad. The touchscreen is solid, too. very easy to work.
The browser is good–i comment often on TSS right from my phone–something i couldn’t do on other phones I had.
AS FOR THE DOWNSIDES…:
The camera totally sucks. can’t zoom or anything.
The video cam feature isn’t great either. I wouldn’t rely on either for high-end pics.
Sometimes the browser crashes for no good reason. Maybe I open too many windows–you can browse up to 6 windows at a time.

Overall, it just depends on what u want… i need buttons so i doubt i’ll go to a G2 which is basically an iPhone for Googleheads.
@ Flea: what’s the name of that app to DL YouTube vids?
I’ve been in the market for a new BB for a quite some time. I like having keyboards over a touch screen and I want multitasking too.
I thought about copping a Pre too but I don’t want to hop to Sprint.
@Gotty I haven’t looked into the Droid too much but it has a keyboard.

Sam – Yeah, but you have to bring the keyboard out. I’m not comfortable w/that b/c i move pretty damn fast and do a lot of typing via my phone.
I like the iTouch’s interface cause it’s user friendly and I’m so accustomed to it but I’d need a similar setup plus a full qwerty keyboard and enough memory for a gsng of music, movies & podcasts if I were gonna shelve it for an all in one phone.
@ El Rosado: It’s called “MxTube”, you should be able to find it in your Cydia installer library.
I send/receive a few hundred emails per day so that’s #1. I’d have to leave the damn keyboard out, which doesn’t sound all that feasible.
But watching videos & surfing the web on a bb is like being on dial-up lol. I want to upgrade that part of my ph experience.
Under no circumstances am I leaving VZW tho lol. Been w/them for over a decade.
Co-Sign Amp, I gotta reconnect with mine as this Blackberry is better as a Hockey puck, I’m sure.
This makes me want to get an upgrade.
I’ve been rocking the same beat up palm for 2 years now
Gotti are you using the new blackberry storm2? It’s smaller, lighter, and faster than the original.. highly recommend.
The iPod for Generation Y is like the Walkman times a hundred, thousand trillion
===================================================
Is it bad that im considered Generation X?
I hate my bb storm….. i keep it on lock and have to type in my p/w at least 4 times…. i get rim exception reports….. do hard resets often… gonna skip it across the pacific ocean soon
Typing on my Curve was so much easier than typing on my Bold 9700. But the Bold is a MUCH better phone than the Curve.
Gotty Verizon is getting some very good Android based devices this year so hold out a couple months. There is even talks of an iPhone going through the FCC for approval so yeah
I use to carry around my iPod and iPhone because I thought I would drain my phone battery if I used it as an iPod all day but one day I gave it a try and surprisingly using the iPhone as an iPod didn’t drain my battery much at all so I stopped carrying around my iPod. No need to carry two devices when one is enough.
@El Rosado,
Yourtube >>>>> MxTube
Yourtube is similar to mxtube but it installs into the YouTube app itself and just adds the download option. No need to have two seperate apps when you can have one. I can’t think of one thing MxTube does that Yourtube doesn’t.
Also
Videorecorder3g >>>>> Cycorder
Videorecorder lets you edit videos and change the format and email it.
MxTube and Cycorder are both OLD apps.
I got the HTC Hero which is an android-based phone… the biggest downside to it is picture quality.. especially when you youtube things. It’s horrible, like actually blurry. That, and the battery sucks! I hardly use it to its full capability.. I usually only talk on it for work.. and at the end of the day its dead.
Besides that… I think its the best android phone out there… its on the sprint network
Videorecorder lets you edit videos and change the format and email it.
