“Gotti*, Can we get a Guru post???? I didn’t see a story about my man, one half of one of the most significant duo’s in hip hop. Not a mention yet?” — Pooch
Sheesh. I’ve gotten roughly six emails regarding Guru and seen a few comments like the one above. Honestly, I was rather busy today so I couldn’t get to a post. Plus, I was awaiting confirmation, hoping that last night’s reports that Guru lay comatose after going into cardiac arrest would end up being false reports. They weren’t.
What do I say? “I’m sad that a rapper is in the hospital” just doesn’t seem appropriate, not strong or sincere enough. Truth be told, Guru’s said enough sideways shit over the past year or two that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth regarding where he stands. The guy who rapped about “Just To Get A Rep” seemed to be hellbent on tarnishing his, at least to me. Damn near turned into that uncle who you equally loathe for his faults but still love because he’s family. Previous to, he was indeed a part of one of the greatest duos in Hip-Hop’s history. There’s no denying that and there’s not much he can say or no number of subpar solo (or Solaar-assisted) releases he can drop that would outweigh what he and DJ Premier achieved as Gang Starr. In fact, we’ve argued their discography several times here, a debate we reserve only for those we revere. Where other people place Erick and Parrish, that’s where I place Guru and Premo. It’s not an embellishment when I say they are “my favorite duo.”
However, even if this was face-to-face, it would be awkward for me to find words to say. I’ve learned that, when someone dies, “I’m sorry” doesn’t help the grieving family members. Therefore, I’ve grown into saying “My condolences to you and your family. If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” In this situation, I’d simply say “My prayers are with Keith Elam and his family. We as a Hip-Hop community are praying for his survival and recovery.” Then, I’d most likely go and listen to old Gang Starr tracks, reminding me why Keithy E. the Guru aka Gifted Unlimited Rhyme Universal, aka Ill Kid Slick was indeed once one of our most respected voices in the game.
Thankfully Shade 45’s DJ Wonder provides the music, so that’s one less thing I have to figure out while I watch as a lot of my rhyme heroes get older.

“Guru still in surgery, keep on praying people, he will make it”
@QtipTheAbstract
“Spoke to preemo. He’s in surgery still keep praying. He’s still here.”
This post is on point… I was heartbroken reading some of the things he said too. Same with CL Smooth. As a head, not just a fan, but a head, I was heartbroken but I feel connected to him like family. I’ve been worried about him like he’s family.
#PrayForGuru was a popular tweet, and it still is…
fuckin teef lol
yeah man. it’s like “stop dog. just stop.” you can’t really yell @ an elder or someone you respect on that level and say all you really want to say. of course we don’t know the inner workings, the messed up contracts, the creative differences and all that shit. but you can see, from the outside and the legacy, how it looks and you just don’t want to see it fucked up.
“I’ve learned that, when someone dies, ‘I’m sorry’ doesn’t help the grieving family members.”
This is so true.
And…
“My condolences to you and your family. If there’s anything I can do, let me know.”
Writing that down – I never know what to say in such situations and so I end up writing 4-Page Letters (word to Aaliyah) from the heart when something simpler should suffice.
Y’know, in retrospect, I’m inclined to agree with you, Gotty.
Gang Starr >>> EPMD
Not by a landslide or anything like that, both legendary duos. Looking back, I think, personally speaking, I listened to way more Gang Starr and were more influential…again, personally speaking.
On another note, Eazy-E never really got a chance to have that heart-to-heart with Dr. Dre and really reconcile matters before his death.
I dunno if Guru & Premier have had a chance to do what Eazy & Dre never did, but let’s hope Guru pulls through so they can do at least that. Fuck the music shit.
Rumors of Guru’s passing were premature and greatly exagerrated. The kid who did it, did it #JustToGetARep
Praying for Guru and his family. He needs everyone to be strong for him.
I’ve always respected Guru, and even though I wasn’t a huge fan of his monotone voice and never-changing delivery, he was still an influential piece to some of the greatest music that Hip-Hop has ever created. While there were many times that I wished Premo would have sent some of those classic Gangstarr beats Jeru, Nas, Jay, Big L, or even Pre-Pun’s death Fat Joe, you can’t deny what Guru helped created.
I hope he pulls through.
Come on Mr. Elam!
i hope he gets well.
my older brother put me onto gangstarr when i was 8 years old. loved the beats and rhymes ever since. even when guru went to do his jazzmatazz thing. really hope he gets well. now, that i think of this, whatever happened to krumbsnatcha? (on 1998’s make em pay off moment of truth)
and as for a lil plug, feel free to pick up dj khaled, dmx and jason derulo’s albums by clicking my name. plus, much much more. check it out.
I personally always loved Guru’s montone voice. His not so complex but always sharp style, and bravado years before people used the word swag. As an MC he always stood out, and will remain one of my favorites.
This is one of those situations where you can comfortably say there will never be another Guru. And that to me is what a legacy is all about.
This news FUCKED my night…Jazzmatzz is my favorite series in hip-hop…what the fuck is a Mood Muzick saga?
Jazzmatzz > Mood Muzick series…
GET WELL GURU…
if GURU stays strong
we will see another
damn Gangstarr LP
How did I miss the fact that Primo and Guru had a falling out????
Oh I know, I work too much and have two kids.
Gotty, can you or someone give me a rundown?
Pooch
teef you are a nut. lol
Hopefully Guru pulls through; he is one of my Favorite MC’s. I played Jazzmatazz Vol 1 till the tape popped.
Put on “Moment of Truth” and listen to that album start to finish. Great album. The dual disc Greatest Hits is also a must own.
It’s a shame how rappers today have forgot about Premo.
guru’s nephew speaks on his uncle’s condition and solar [www.youtube.com].
this nigga solar is acting real fuckin’ gay!
Gotty, ur a classless piece of shit
Ummm… Gurulicious??? Dude is fruity. Time to face the music…
