For all you low-life types that like to put Mexicans at the brunt of your jokes, it’s time to eat crow (and a 33 gallon bowl of Albondigas). According to Forbes, Carlos Slim Helú just made it rain in Bill Gates’ face and still has more pesos to play with.
Carlos Slim Helú is the name and cell phones are his game. While his empire América Móvil may not be so widespread on U.S. soil (although 14 million isn’t too shabby), it is the fourth largest mobile network operator in terms of equity subscribers as well as the largest corporation in Latin America.
I wonder if he used a green, white & red Blackberry Curve to call up William Gates and taunt him when the news broke. The conversation probably went something like this…

Carlos Slim has been a grizzly for a minute. He earned 18.5 billion in just 1 year. But his RMITW status will only be momentary cuz the number 1 seed always fluctuates, Gates and Buffet are always rotating and he’s only beating Gates by like 500 mil. I wouldnt exactly say that. He is tight but rich people are gonna ALWAYS figure out ways to keep their money, even while being largess. He’s not big on philanthropies but he does have his “private foundations” that he feels better than philanthropies (I don’t have a blanket agreement about that), in which he will be increasing his contribution from 4 billion to 10 billion by next year.

Mexico is so gully right now. NAFTA killed their economy and left folks more impoverished than they were before. As a MexiRican (half Mexican, half puerto-rican) I don’t fuck around with going to visit my family in Mexico anymore. Haven’t been out there in almost 4 years and they tell me stay away anyway. I will be going back to Puerto Rico at the end of this month though, looking forward to some island chilling. Puerto-Rico is poor too but not nearly as crime-ridden as Mexico…well at least violent crime.
I remember reading an article about this guy in a business magazine. The article stated that he got into business with capital from the government; not sure how true that is, maybe someone can confirm this?

@ Flea: If I remember correctly, he swooped in during the early-mid 1990′s when the Mexican economy had crashed and the peso was devalued. The government decided to privatize the telecom industry, but they still had letters of credit issued to them for telecom projects, so he purchased those letters of credit from the government, which guaranteed the capital loans he needed to get started on building his wealth.

Yeah my fam lives in San Pedro, Guadalajara. It’s awful down there. Same here, my family was here 2 years ago for Christmas and they tell me to stay home. People are getting killed by simply being in the wrong place and these bastards do not discriminate they are killing kids as well. Murking whole families… I hope it gets better.

Same story everywhere my family is from Coahuila Mexico, the president of Coahuila made an announcement the other day “if you dont live here, stay the f*ck out” things have really gotten out of hand in Mexico.
Yup, Mexico is royally f’d, has been so for a long time and it’s not getting any better. WEhile Slim was always a shrewd bussinessman, it’s pretty much common knowledge that the meteoric rise in his fortune is tied up to his “silent partner”, former ex-president Carlos Salinas, who siphoned funds out of the country faster than you can down a shot of Sauza.
I left Mexico in 2003 for the States, and only came back around 8 months ago to renew my visa and get rid of everything I owned before leaving for good. Most of my family is planning likewise. A shame, really, it’s a beautiful country.
