Sucker move alert.
In what could be Bring It On 5, the white ZTA sorority didn’t win. Well, they still technically won but they’ll have to share their crown with the AKA’s.
After the National Finals Competition this past weekend in Atlanta wrapped, we got together to do our post-competition review and found a scoring discrepancy in the sorority results. After looking at it and looking at it AGAIN, we determined there isn’t a definitive resolution.
Sprite is all about preserving the honesty and integrity of this competition. Because the scoring discrepancy can’t be resolved and due to the really tight margin between the first and second place sorors, we feel that the only right thing to do is to name both Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter & Zeta Tau Alpha, Epsilon Chapter, co-first place winners of the Sprite Step Off.
With these revised results, we’re gonna increase Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter’s scholarship prize to $100K, consistent with what Zeta Tau Alpha also got for their first prize winnings.
That’s some weak ass bullshit © G-Baby.
A “scoring discrepancy”? A little stink got onto the contest and they go back, splitting the crown? This week, I’d speculate that young Black people (and old too, I guess) made more noise for a step show than they did for changes in credit cards, President Obama presenting a revised health care plan and other news items. Priorities fail.
Don’t misinterpret my statements here. I’m all for a corporation doling out scholarship money to any deserving high school or college student. Yet, there’s bigger battles to be concerned with. Hell, there are even smaller battles worth more energy than who was/wasn’t out of sync the five minute mark of their performance. Furthermore, if I were head honcho over the Step-Off, I’d be fine with the brouhaha. Controversy sells; keep’em talking until next year’s competition.
No matter how many times they replay that Drake commercial to attempt to influence me, I’m a little wary of drinking Sprite now. I’m hearing reports that it will weaken your spine.

i completely agree with your bigger battles comment. it always boggles my mind to see folks acting hyper sensitive to certain issues when there’s bigger fish to fry.
pretty shitty that sprite got strong armed into doing this but like you said, at least more scholarship money got dealt out.
word to Orlando Jones 7-Up commercials.
Jesse Jackson must have been at the ready to begin boycotting Sprite. Here is a quote from Messy Jesse; “If the champs are White; I won’t drink Sprite!!!”
They were already all winners to me. All of them could get it…
“I got a Jones like Norah for your Soror…”
Either you say what the discrepancy was or you stand by your decision. I guess this means we Black people can call off the Great Sprite Boycott of 2010. MLK is smiling down on us for taking a stand.

Well-stated.
Can we say “Bitch Move”?
They obviously had a better showing than AKA. It’s a win educationally but a very huge L socially because a couple of folks couldn’t accept the fact that ZTA did well.
…so, does that mean the Deltas get bumped up to 2nd place (as well as a bump in prize money)?
Black president is all good but mufuggas will be damned if white girls win a step show lol.
Question: if the Deltas won 1st place on questionable terms, would they have gone back on their decision?
Here’s the thing: most of the crowd was AKAs and Alphas. Of course they’d boo. Loudly. What sprite doesn’t understand is that in step shows people ALWAYS gripe if it’s close. That’s what judges are for.
Reiterates: bitch. ass. ness.
Equal opportunity @ it’s finest lol.
Fuck it though. Sprite’s sympin’ could cost them an extra $100k.
people always bitch even if it aint close too lol
honestly i forgot ZTA had even won this thing. Is it that offensive to see a non-black frat/sorority out there stepping/strolling?(serious ?)
There are way more race related issues that we should be addressing instead of a damn step show. Case in point…..
The Rev. Al Sharpton held a press conference today to blast Tiger Woods for the lack of diversity among his mistresses. Sharpton claims that the lack of African-American women among Woods’ harem will have a negative effect on the black community, specifically young black girls.
“Why is it that a man who calls himself black can’t bring himself to cheat on his wife with a black woman?” said Sharpton, speaking to a group of supporters in Harlem. “What does it say to young black girls everywhere when you pass them over? Shame on you, Tiger Woods. What would your daddy say?”
Sharpton, who has long championed taking black women as mistresses, said that today’s black athletes need to stop neglecting black women when it comes to extramarital affairs, and should follow the examples of positive black role models such as Jesse Jackson and Martin Luther King, Jr., both of whom cheated on their wives with black women. Sharpton also stressed that cheating with African-American women would help the black community financially by giving black girls the chance to sell their stories to tabloids and gossip magazines.
Added Sharpton, “I’m not asking you to not cheat on your wives, I’m just asking you to give back to your own community.”
“Yet, there’s bigger battles to be concerned with.”
Here, here.
that VA guy
ahahhaahha!
@that VA guy: HE SAID THAT?!? smh
“I’m a little wary of drinking Sprite now. I’m hearing reports that it will weaken your spine.”
-hahaha so true.i miss fruitopia and surge.
@That VA Guy.
I heard about that but I thought it was a joke? Anybody got a link? That diatribe has the onion written all over it hahaha.
that was a joke. it came out around the time of the tiger thing.
I am an Alpha, and I saw both shows, and I have the say the White girls held it down. I understand the AKA’s were Salty, but they got beat. Sprite then went and said hold up, we can’t have all these black people mad at us, we have to fix this. I lknow “let’s say that there was a problem with the score sheets”. Let me see the score sheets and lets see. Sorors, I love yal, but dem whits girls were good and put it down.
Damn. Sprite lost.
FUCK SPRITE! I’m all about that Sierra Mist from now on!!! LOL!
Sprite messed up, but this wasn’t the way to fix it.
Consider: You had judges with no ties to the steppin culture.
You had a corporate sponsor who didn’t know much about steppin either.
You had a group, the ZTAs—who while they were nice, literally lifted a routine that’s been done dozens of times by every black frat and sorority step squad at every HBCU campus every year for at least the last 12 years (since the Matrix came out); yet we’re trying to act like it was a gold medal performance.
Had this been some sistahs doing the exact same routine with equal flair and competency, everyone watching woulda said, “Yeah, that’s nice, but the Matrix was 15 years ago. do sumthin new.”
When jay-z uses whole Biggie verses into his songs, we don’t act like he came up with something new–we acknowledge the call-back and we judge accordingly.
When we watch Kobe do his MJ impression going baseline, we don’t cat liek we don’t know where his moves came from.
And as with most of music, when we see someone borrowing and stealing from others, we may acknowledge their skill in pulling it off, but we respect the architects.
In the ZTA’s case, they shouldn’t have one. folks should recognized that (1) Yes they brought it, yes they were nice with it. But more importantly, it had zero originality. ZERO. Consequently, they shouldn’t have won over the schools that came with more original routines, namely the 3 crews that finished behind them.
I don’t agree with how Sprite handled this, but I ain’t sheddin tears for ZTA; their skin privilege got them way further than it should’ve which was further than the sistahs who were better than them.
As for “bigger fish to fry”. Of course, but don’t front like we can’t multitask.
sorry for the typos… gotta spellcheck next time…
I still don’t see why people cxomplain about the matrix shit when rhythm nation was how much longer ago?
Sorry But “ALL GREEKS” bite from each other(sorry it’s true). So to say ZTA stole or did something another org did is like throwing a brick inside a glass house. The show they did was a revision of one they did 2 years ago. So that means the kick new ass with old boots. I was at the show, they won..the AKA’s were great but they came in second(a close second). Sprite should have stuck with their first decision and the D9 sororities just need to realize that they need to come harder now. They aren’t the only ones who can get a crowd hype.
yeah that whole rev thing was a joke but the bigger punchline is that we wouldn’t have really been surprised if it were true. And how is sprite bad for the spine, I always preferred Fresca anyways
My sorors won hands down and we part of the Divine 9. I love, I Love, I love My A.K.A
I agree with BlackConseco. While I don’t agree with the decision by sprite either, leaves a bad taste in my mouth, the judges should have been from all of the participating orgs or at least from the steppin’ culture. You would still had gripes, as usual, but there is an understanding of stepping that was missed in this judging. And I have NEVER stolen from any org. We may have performed a tribute to the Frats(which I think in inappropriate for a national step show), but what would I look like being an SGRho performing a DST step :-( Anyway, the I think the issue really is not so much about the steppers being white, as opposed to the sorority being white. They have no historical background to stepping thus the stealing of the steps. SGRho has a lot of white, asian and spanish members, and if an all white SGRho org performed and won, I DO NOT believe the outrage would be the same.
This is straight shigidy…why are people all upset. Scoring discrepancy…are you kidding me. Those white girls outright won the competition from the videos I watched. This is straight silly…if they were better, then they deserved to win. It’s like saying because the White House is white then we can’t have a black president in it. AKA’s and the other sore losers just need to STEP up their game…lol!
this is what happens when corps get involved with stuff like this. it was a set up from the beginning. MTV/Sprite knew what they were doing and wanted to make a story out of all of this. The AKAs were a lot better.
aka’s I saw both performances. You lost fair and square to those white girls, but now…You won…on a “technicality.” yay. How can u truly be proud of yourselves? I’d accept a fair loss over a fraudulent win any day of the week. Now you have “half a crown”, You ruined the integrity of the competition, and showed none of the class you all are so well known for. Kongrats!
Yea…I mean I didn’t watch this competition but I find the backlash pretty comical. Everyone is all up in arms only because this is a white sorority that won. I guarantee if the sorority was all black this would have never been an issue.
