02.26.10 Written by Gotty™

Ronnie Fieg has these Asics up as his Twitter icon or he did yesterday at least. It looks like he’s got another pair up today. But he was courteous enough to post a larger pic of the pair dubbed the “Super Reds.”

If it’s the Bay people want, the Bay they shall get. And who else better to get the party and movement thriving than a couple of its ambassadors, E-40 Watta and $hort Dawg the Peeeemp. When you try and break down Revenue Retrievin’ into actual English, your instincts tell that that money is coming in from the block. But in this exception, our OG’s get the cash the oldest way known to man. Read the rest of this entry »

Yeah, They May Be Right On This One

02.25.10 Written by Gotty™

Dime dubbed this dunk by high school baller Dwaun Andersonhigh school dunk of the year candidate.” If there’s one thing journalism and the internet are built on, it’s hyperbole and sensationalism. I clicked. I watched. I agree (What charge?!?). If this kid is only 6’3″ and just a junior, I think it’s safe to throw his name in the hat.

I’m sure the guy who got dunked on may be of a different opinion than the rest of us though. Read the rest of this entry »

Latarian Milton Is Not Too Hood For Hollywood

02.25.10 Written by Gotty™

And this is why Al Gore created the internet. Latarian Milton links up with Comedy Central to do hood rat stuff in Hollywood. Normally, I’m not an advocate of Brangelina tactics, swooping through trying to save the world one little Negro child @ a time. But dear Lord Yahweh, whatever it takes to keep Latarian off the streets, I’m all for it. Read the rest of this entry »

OKPTV x Reflection Eternal

02.25.10 Written by Gotty™

Let OKP tell it.

After a short break, we’re back with the latest edition of Okayplayer TV. Who better to bring back OKPTV than one of our most favorite groups, Reflection Eternal. Live from the set of RE’s upcoming video, “In This World,” OKP chops it up with Kweli and Hi-Tek about The RE:Union, why they took so long to come out with a new album, gettin’ props from Jay-Z (and turning it into a hook), and more. Look for the video “In This World” to drop next week. Reflection Eternal’s new album, Revolutions Per Minute will be out April 6th.

Since we haven’t been able to get these one of these two guys to do an interview, this is about the best you’ll be getting for now. For five years, I’ve been giving Talib that same look that Hi-Tek’s got in the screencap. Yes, shots. Lightweight though because a.) I could really give a rat’s ass and b.) his music is still impressive.

Anyways, cool interview and status update.

Gotta Be Karim Feat. Rockwell Knuckles – “Make A Living”

Ahhh…the daily hustle ‘n bustle surviving in these United States. Who would know better than a couple of Midwestern MCs, rapping on an empty stomach. Ice Cube Is The Lick, West Side Is The Click!

02.25.10 Written by TC

Out of all of Hip-Hop’s pioneers, I’m thankful Ice Cube is still making music. Scratch that. We ALL should be thankful Ice Cube is still making music. Most rappers that were thriving in Golden Era (roughly 1988-1994) are merely shells of shells their former selves; looking foolish trying to keep up with their younger counterparts. Juse Dayne – “Popular Demand”

02.25.10 Written by J. Tinsley

First impressions mean everything. Often times the difference between an opportunity and a missed one. With that said, meet Juse Dayne.

The Camden, New Jersey, native (who spent his teen years in Virginia) is preparing his introduction into the crowded lobby that is Hip-Hop. Over the span of the coming months, Juse intends to release what he calls the Transcend Trilogy. Three mixtapes with 11 tracks a piece all 33 days apart from one another. The first tape, Informal Introduction, is just that, an introduction. Over the course of the tape, the listener will have the opportunity to get to know and hear Dayne over some of the industry’s most infectious instrumentals. The remaining two feature original production.

In its entirety, Informal… doesn’t come out until March 3 (April 5 and May 8 are the other release dates). Juse’s first stint on TSS, however, is a vocal exercise over a beat Malice and Pusha previously laid to rest. It may not be Cam’s “ESPN Freestyle,” but it is an impressive lyrical sports outing nonetheless. He even managed to slide a Ralph Sampson reference in there. So yeah, here’s that first impression I was talking about.

When Durant Meets Batman

02.25.10 Written by MZ

As the Spurs make the adjustment from being perennial contenders to pretenders, they’ve almost become afterthoughts this year when the championship is discussed. When your top player is known as “The Big Fundamental,” it’s not expected for your team to make many highlight reels. But last night in a tight game between Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder, Manu Ginobili made the highlights and may have saved the game at the same time.

Down by one with under three minutes to play, Kevin Durant was leading the break on the way to a seemingly easy dunk since LeBron wasn’t on the court. Swooping in from stage right in the ultimate case of risk/reward, Ginobili turned back Durant. The Spurs went on to win 95-87 and ended Durant’s streak of 29 straight games of scoring 25 or more points in a game.

The block may not have saved the Spurs’ season, but it did save their caped crusader from having this block be their play of the year.

The Dude Abides

02.25.10 Written by Beware

I’d be willing to bet all three digits of my bank account that when Joel and Ethan Coen decided to follow up their critically-acclaimed and Oscar-winning film Fargo with a mishap kidnap story revolving around three bowlers and a paraplegic, they had no clue a dozen years later 8-inch action figures would be derived from the cult-favorite’s two lead gutter balls – Walter and The Dude – let alone that fucking pedophile Jesus.

Instead of contemplating whether or not to cop these Urban Achievers from Entertainment Earth, just remember everyone you’ve ever met in your life recites The Big Lebowski and each one of those people has a birthday this year.

No, thank you.

Freddie’s Savage Life

02.25.10 Written by J. Tinsley

If the labels really are trying to kill Freddie G, consider TSS the breath of life. Str8 Killa No Filla is coming. In fact, it’s being broken down right now and should be ready for inhaling sooner than you think. The next installment from the tape, “Slammin’,” finds Gibbs resurrecting Webbie’s Savage Life intro, “G-Shit.”

Correct me if I’m wrong. Since the days of 50′s mixtape dominance, there haven’t been many artists who have the ability to take another’s instrumental and create an entirely new feel to the record. Freddie happens to be one who can. The streets are always going to have stories to tell. Gibbs once again plays voice box while speaking on inner-workings of G.I. street life. The good, the bad and the ugly.

“So hoe I’m trappin’ straight from passing whip
From whippin’ white to dealin’ board
Just shipped a gang of stanky to Kankakee, Illinois
So hit me for them demonstrations for yo’ main and ‘em
No conversation, just straight up ventilation for your cranium…”

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that sounds like 2010 trap music.
