Hey, you, unknown rapper. I know what you’re thinking. For the past three years, you’ve been going overdrive, working on your magnum opus. A whopping 10-disc masterpiece of all new material that would not only eclipse every other MC in existence with it’s sheer size and volume, but make sure those dues were finally paid in full and that the much-deserved shine you’d been grinding so hard for since ’05 was going to 360° your life into a stratosphere typically set aside for rap royalty. Right?

Well, guess what? Messy Marv is dropping a twelve disc album and there’s nothing you can do about it.

That’s correct, according to a new interview with Baycentrik, Filmore’s grimiest goon is upping the ante with his upcoming online-only album, Project Superstar, which should trump all previous releases put out by, well, anyone.

Baycentrik: You’ve teased you were putting out a 12 disc album. Were you serious when you said that?

Mess: Right. 12 disc album, it will be available in April 2010. 12 discs, Project Superstar. You have to get it online, it’s one of them albums that I’m doing just strictly for all the online heads, the internet heads. I’m trying to build my online presence so I’m giving them a special package for supporting me for so long. A 12 disc album for a little bit of nothing, you know? You have to log onto ScalenLLC.com to get it.

I get that dude’s on his grind and has enough extra material stashed around the studio to release such a colossal monstrosity. But, with listeners’ attention spans going lower than low, is anyone really going to make it through a dozen discs? Doubtful. If it were me, I’d release one disc a month, insuring fans consistently got new music and that the last eleven discs didn’t get overlooked. Which they will. Am I wrong?

Our pals over at Stones Throw tossed this dose of Dam Funk into the inbox yesterday. This time to the beat of…well…tell ‘em Peanut Butter Wolf.

Dam and I went to a studio last night and recorded an acoustic piano version of “Steppin Into My Life” and filmed the whole process live. Just Dam, an acoustic piano, 2 mics and a candle in a room surrounded by red velvet curtains – in time for Valentine’s Day.

And that’s it. A classical jam session with retro camera work. Perfect. Unlike the mellow funkiness of the OG (below), this Valentines Day recreation sounds like something you’d catch on PBS late night – blown out – and be super satisfied with just zoning to it for the next 45 minutes.

The masses slept on Too Hood 2 Be Hollywood but that’s alright with B. Gizzle. The N’awlins Saint can run the underground market better than Reggie Bush at this point. An embarrassment. That particular statement best describes last night’s Slam Dunk contest which featured less wow factor than a shuffleboard tournament on a senior citizen cruise, sponsored by Cialis®. It was a flawed, record-breaking victory for Nate Robinson who became the first three-time champion in the event. With the only criteria for scoring seemingly being to actually make a dunk. Whether an artist looks toward heightening their lives from funds collected, appeasing their ego with fame or simply tries to go legit and fly straight, everybody in the music business has an agenda. There’s nothing wrong with that. As they say, to each his own. Still, with typically cash-driven prerogatives, artists have leaned further and further away from just making a song that can cater to any age group and leave listeners saying with a grin, “Now, that was a good tune.”

Along with numerous other projects coming up, we’re working on putting a few new items in the Smokeshop. Today, we drop off two stickers…because who doesn’t like stickers? The first one is the “Razor,” whose design is influenced by one of the most instrumental record labels of the 90′s. And the guys from there are obviously friends of ours as well so that helps. We also restocked on the Logo stickers so if you’re still in the want, those are available too.

Fairly limited run on both so get’em while the gettin’ is still good.

Looking out my window at the moment I see snowflakes the size of cotton bolls descending from the sky.  It’s at this time, when we get our first real storm, that spring seems so far away.  Which is why this new track from Marsha is a godsend.  Certain songs evoke certain triggers and feelings and I just feel spring as soon as the needle (thanks to DJ Aktive) drops on this self-produced track.

Between the airy synths, tribal drums and staccato organ chops, Marsha settles down in the pocket and gets to work. With Late Nights & Early Mornings set to release sometime this year, it looks like 2010 is the year Marsha gets her groove back.

2005 seems so long ago.  Soldiering on, Chamilionaire is intent to bring H-Town back it’s championship run from a few years back.

“I thought I’d take this opportunity [All-Star Weekend in Dallas, Tx] to remind the rest of the world that Texas is still doing it big when it comes to music.” Chamillionaire says of his ambitious endeavor. “Every artist on the song with me has independent hustle and strength in the streets. It’s an All-Star song so what better place to shoot the video than All-Star Weekend, right here in our own backyard.” – Chamilionaire

Much like many of the actual All-Star Games, the hype & “star” power makes this more appealing right up to the point that anyone actually suits up to play.  By the time  everything is wrapped up all parties involved leave no worse for their troubles, the crowd sees a good show and it’s all forgotten within a week.

Be on the look out if you make to Dallas this weekend, because Cham will be out & about filming during the festivities.

The plan is to shoot each of the guys guerilla-style, as they walk red carpets and mix and mingle at the many A-list events they plan on attending; a style of shooting that award-winning video director, Dr. Teeth, is very comfortable with. The final video will also feature a grand finale performance scene featuring all of the artists to be shot at an undisclosed location.

Something tells me MJ won’t be making a cameo.
