Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony – “Rebirth” Video

02.17.10 Written by TC

While it may feel overwhelming at times, the new blood in Hip-Hop bring just that: new blood. Imagine if Robert Parrish was still allowed to linger on various team benches, taking up a slot that could be put to better use. You know he would if he could, but that would be detrimental to the team and entire NBA as a whole so they wouldn’t allow that to happen. So why is it that washed-up, outdated acts are allowed to plague our community simply living off past glory? Read the rest of this entry »

Waka Flocka Non-Stoppa

02.17.10 Written by Beware

Remember when DMX releasing two albums in 1998 seemed unfathomable? Well, welcome to 2010, where double-digit amounts of releases per year are mandatory and ham is an adjective.

Well, if you’re Waka Flocka Flame, that is.

Apparently, Brick Squad’s prince of the trap is gunning to capitalize on his bullet wounds by releasing 20 albums by year’s end. Yes, you read it correctly. Twen-ty. As in 2 x 10, or 1 + 19. It sounds crazy, because it is. Especially considering Fifty drew up the blueprint for exploiting getting got, and Waka’s year-end-goal winds up being two more releases than Curtis has put out…over his entire career. I know Waka is trying to change the game like every other rapper, but damn son. Twenty albums might as well be 40, which might as well be five. Because when all you do is rap about what you’ve got, cooking up dope, getting shot and killing people, your shit sounds stepped on at a certain point. Ya dig me?

In related news, pigs are flying out of ATL, moving soft across Georgia state lines and smoking Newport 100s.

DaVinci – “Hustler’s Theme”

02.17.10 Written by Corey Bloom

Much like the product itself, Hustle/D-Boy Rap is only as good as it’s packaged. It’s not a lifestyle I relate to, but it does make for an intriguing story when done right. For San Francisco (Filmore to be exact) spitter DaVinci, all the ingredients are in place. His laid back flow and maneuverability over the subtle key and string arrangements in “Hustlers Theme” are stimulating and soothing. There is an honesty in his voice that is void of any braggadocio, leaving all clutter cut with the bullshit to the side. Even if the shoes weren’t ours to fill there are still some jewels to walk away with. Definitely a good start for someone looking to set up shop in this game.

The Day The Turf Stood Still drops March 9th.

Get Buck!

02.17.10 Written by Gotty™

Bucks and saddle shoes have been back on my radar for a minute, two definitive styles that every man should have in his closet. And this dark brown Buckingham model by Bass Shoes fits the bill without breaking the bank. Rubber soles for comfort and the company’s legacy for suede craftsmanship. While they could always be paired up with khakis and a blazer, nice denim and a relaxed sweater would take these a lot further for casual wear, wherever you decided to go.

Available @ Urban Outfitters and other retailers. Read the rest of this entry »

More previously unreleased Lonnie Lynn from the Finding Forever studio sessions. No major differences (at least not to my ears) except that it’s sans Dwele on the chorus, replaced instead by Com singing for self. Read the rest of this entry »

TiRon – “For Your Smile”

02.17.10 Written by MZ

And back then I was rockin’ Payless/cuz my mother got paid less/and if it cost over $30, had to Ross it…”

TiRon takes you back to those school daze, when finding Ms. Right Now was more pertinent than finding “Ms. Right.” When your social status was directly attributed to your wardrobe and who was draped on your arm. Over the whimsical strings and keys arrangement by DJ Dahi, his words will either ring true or hollow depending on your lot in life during adolescence.  Regardless of what side of the fence you were on, we can all agree that things were much simpler back then.

Be on the lookout for TiRon’s upcoming Mustard mixtape.

Jay Leno Takes Another Blow

02.17.10 Written by Beware

As the dust from the Late Night Wars finally begins to settle, one residual blow is being taken to Jay Leno’s refurbished Tonight Show. There are reports that Kevin Eubanks – Jay’s chuckling bandleader for the past 14 years – will not be riding shotgun during Leno’s second tenure as host. Apparently, the primetime bandleader doesn’t want to be an accessory to robbery.

With the Tonight Show band gig now open and The Roots already taken, maybe Hip-Hop will get another late night look.

Snoop Dogg, anyone?

It’s About To Be A Bus Fight

02.17.10 Written by David D.

Gottsdale has passed the buck given me the opportunity to take his place as honorary fight translator. Let’s skip formalities and get to what you came to see.

0:00- 0:10 – We can see a miscommunication forming as the grizzled salt and pepper-haired Caucasian fellow and Coolio are not on the same page. Old Man Grizzly has offered for Coolio to spit-shine his Stacy Adams. Conversations like this haven’t ended well since the 70′s.

0:11-0:15 – They both take off their shades. Coolio takes his off in the “I’m about to whoop your ass” way and Grizzly takes his off in the “I don’t get the issue, by looking into his eyes, we can communicate better” sort of way. Methinks Grizzly is mistaken.

Sidebar – Young lady next to Coolio, your American Apparel outfit disturbs me. I hope you have no friends.

0:16-0:30 – *Raises fist* Coolio is taking all of Black America’s problems into his own hands. Way to stand up for us all. I’m against interracial shoe shines too.

0:30-0:33 – “It can be a Chinaman! It don’t matter!”- Grizzly. This is where Coolio should start worrying. People that use words like “Chinamen” probably use words like “Viet Cong” and “Japs” and they probably use them in the context of “I killed 43 Viet Congs with a toothpick during the battle of Dienbienphu.”

Also, look closely at Grizzly’s right forearm. See that tat? I can’t make it out, but he probably carved it himself when he was a POW.

0:40-0:48 – As Grizzly stands up, take a gander at American Apparel girl give him the once over. “Holy shit,” she thinks. “We’re wearing the same outfit. No wonder I’m so lonely.”

0:48-0:56 – Grizzly doesn’t seem to understand that “I’ll put my foot up yo’ ass” is a figure of speech as he seems to genuinely be outraged that Coolio would suggest something so physically impossible.

1:33 – “I see tough guys like you and I slap the shit out of’em” – Grizzly. Sounds like a line from a Steven Segal movie. Wait…is that you, Steve?

1:38-1:41 – Coolio goes with a soft body blow. Grizzly hops up with the speed of a coked up cheetah. Pretty sure Grizzly blacked out and had a war flashback. It’s all red from here on out.

1:41-1:50 – Play. Rewind. Play. Rewind. Play.

1:50-2:00 – “I TOLD YOU NOT TO FUCK WITH ME!” See, Grizzly gave up his violent ways and swore to never throw a punch again after a mission went awry and he lost his right-hand man. He hasn’t fought in 40 years, but Coolio pushed him over the edge.

One day, a young lad looking to avenge his parents’ deaths will take up crime fighting. His first attempt will fail, forcing him to flee for safety from two armed thugs. He will stumble into a back alley and bump into Grizzly, who will ward off the thugs with his bare hands. The boy will implore Grizzly to “teach me your ways.” After relenting for months, Grizzly takes the boy under his wing, saving the child’s life while breaking through his own rocky exterior and mysterious past, warming his golden heart in a quest for redemption.

2:01 – Does his shirt say “I am a Motherfucker?”

2:16 – “I’m a fuck you up” – Coolio. You sure will buddy. Next time.

2:50-3:00 – It sinks in. “That motherfucker hit me.” Yes, multiple times. Don’t worry, someone is about to call the abbalance.

The lesson learned here is that Oakland does not play, especially not its bus riders.

J. Cole – “Knock On Wood” Freestyle

02.17.10 Written by J. Tinsley

Until the above track surfaces, any new music from Fayetteville, North Carolina’s favorite son will suffice. Light skin Jermaine borrows Lonnie’s cut to keep us music hungry vultures satisfied while he continues to work on his currently untitled Roc Nation debut. With a title like “Knock On Wood,” the untrained eye may be led to believe Cole’s career is based solely around luck. Quite the contrary. Two mixtapes (one critically acclaimed), an impressive feature on his boss’s album, a tour with that very same boss and two “out-of-this-world” type verses happen to prove otherwise.

Judging from his own admission, this was probably recorded sometime within the past 48 hours. Between work and keeping the ol’ lady happy, the poor guy didn’t even have time to catch the All-Star Game.

Devin The Dude – “What I Be On”

02.16.10 Written by K1NG

Simply put, Devin The Dude is one of the greatest rappers in the game.

Of course, if you look for an artist with songs full of concise social commentary and mind-boggling flows, than you will probably disagree. That’s fine. But if you’re a Hip-Hop fan that still has the ability to enjoy a lighthearted conversation over break beats, there just isn’t very many who can match the Houston native’s unique melodic flow that has been accompanying smoking sessions for almost two decades now.
