Seems like we’ve been here before, Grammys.
The award show is teetering on the edge of exploitation. Follow me here. The Grammy head honchos know where their bread is buttered. They know that Hip-Hop is at the forefront of the musical landscape, so their headline performance (for the second year in a row, mind you) comes from Hip-Hop artists. Yet, where is the music represented in the awards? No album of the year nominations and most of the category’s awards were given out off-camera.
It’s like they know that the biggest ratings are going to come from Hip-Hop, but nobody wants to acknowledge the art form’s impact by giving it even a nomination in the main categories this year. And no, you don’t count, Black Eyed Peas.
Last year, it was hard to criticize the winner for album of the year because I had no clue Robert Plant was releasing solo work, so I couldn’t speak on the music. But Heavenly Lord almighty in a kangaroo pouch, nobody on this planet is going to convince me that Taylor Swift had the best album of the year and should be winning the same awards Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder won before her. Going from Thriller to Fearless is like having sex with Halle Berry then doing anal with Star Jones’ liposucked fat juices.
As for the actual mega-performance from Drake, Em, and Wayne (backed by Travis Barker who went absolutely ham on the drums), it was every bit the moment you’d expect. Opening with a crystal clear rendition of “Drop The World”, Wayne and Slim actually made Rebirth worth revisiting for a split-second, but the real triumph came when those air horns sounded for the eternal anthem that is “Forever.”
Eminem destroyed both verses and recited each word flawlessly. Drake looked like a star getting his big moment and Weezy was in his zone. Thanks to whoever was in charge of editing at CBS, though, we only heard about three bars from each rapper. News Flash: rappers use non-curse words too, CBS. Despite the long silences, this performance was nothing short of epic.
Here’s what it would have sounded like…if the censors weren’t so shook of those “menacing rappers.” Just one question: Where were you Yeezy???

i agree that lemonface swift shouldnt be acknowledged as the best overall. i also agree that the misplacement of the censors was a bit much. but as i look back, fergie even got over-censored during the BEP performance.
and as for kanye, this may be a good thing. he isn’t there, therefore no one can continue to bring up mtv awards bullshit(as if it mattered. its only the mtv awards).
and this way, i think kanye can drop his new album in this “grammy year”, and more than likely be nominated again next year. and be right back on top of his game. and with all the time gone by and some new hits banging all over, he’ll have his overall forgiveness.

Yo Dave D, Amen on the Black Eyed Peas comment.
Def good post and it’s on all our minds.
Popular culture is progressed by hip hop, yet popular culture execs want to muzzle the culture…It’s like covert black-sploitation.
Sidebar: Yeezy was needed at the show to snatch that mc a couple of times…I’m just sayin

Fuck the Grammy’s! Until they start paying my rent at least.
BEP’s are not Hip-Hop @ all. One of the few performances I saw. Their music barely has any resemblance to rap anymore really. Not that that’s bad or anything. Can’t deny who they are though b/c those mofos are megastars @ this point. I bet the lil indian dude has the paps following him lol
Taboo? He likes sucking the toes of females with mouldy feet.
Eminem might make a lot of mediocre music these days but GOD DAMN can that boy rap….
Fuck CBS.
and not that’s it matters but i think dude is Philipenean (spelled wrong but i don’t care), not Indian.
Taboo is of Mexican-American and Native American (Shoshone) descent.
Apl.de.ap is of Filipino and African descent.
lol at them editing words they weren’t sure were cuss words or not “we don’t know what it means so fuck it” lol Grammys suck. I watched most of the show just for the hip hop & r&b while I did enjoy Kings Of Leon accepting their award
Kings of Leon’s album>>>>Most of the winners of the night…
SMH @ Foreign Exchange not winning though
@Paw
Right I was thinking of a.d.a. my bad. thanks for the clarification

Dope article, Dave. CBS dropped the ball on this one.
epic?!! not at all. not even close! epic shouldn’t even be used when describing anything either one of those artists have done performance wise. i mean i get it, wayne has sold millions, but come on’ he makes every performance -no matter what venue- look like the garbage ass source awards.
i thought the performance was typical of rappers these days-to make hip hop look like crap. would it kill the grammys to actually put real hip hop on the stage?-no shots at doug-e. there were so many good albums last year. wtf.

I feel bad now for blaming Drake’s eyebrows for swallowing up the sound.
Good point about Taylor Swift though. I mean come on’!!!!!!
LMAO at that Drake .gif!!!! Waaaaaay too happpy!!!! http://img534.yfrog.com/img534/8421/drakehappy.gif
i saw the name of that gif and was hoping it would be what it was. awesome.
Camille: “Wheelchair Jimmy is gettin it!”

BEP resembles Culture Club now than anything to do with hip hop; but hey they got rich off of doing what they are doing now… Well Will and Fergie got rich. The other 2 might as well change their names to Pras and U-God
I been banned the grammys since O.D.B. said: FUKK DA GRAMMY’s!!
“The other 2 might as well change their names to Pras and U-God”
LMAO
I’m really glad you spoke on this DD. I was disgusted. You could tell that the rappers were editing their own raps for TVs sake, but the censors just couldn’t trust ‘em enough to get their bars in. So, in turn, we got 4-6 bar blocks cut out of verses for the slightest hint at a cuss. Why did I even waste my time?
Second of all…how did you not expect Taylor Swift to get album of the year? Country music fans are the only people that still buy albums, so they’re turning her into a megastar to capitalize. Simple as that.
I’m still trippin’ cuz the Grammy’s came before the Super Bowl, i’m at a loss right now.
Over here on the West coast, when it aired, we got the one without so much censoring.
The sad thing about all of this, if you talk to the younger generation (those in their teens now) they will claim their following of Taylor Swift is absolutely justified. Why, you ask? Well, the argument I have heard is the teenage generation currently holds that taylor swift is more talented than the beatles and will be more famous than britney spears. Saddest shit I have ever heard, is pop music really THAT BAD?
Whoa! That performance was dope
I don’t watch the Grammys so i have got a lot of knowledge about what happened last night from this site alone. The only thing I was looking to hear about was what happened with Foriegn Exchange and that question has been answered. “NOW, ON TO THE NEXT ONE” What (for the sake of argument) would any of you have put out there as “album” of the year? REALLY what has been that good???
^^hip-hop wise that is…
As much as they get shitted on, BEP are kinda dope.
I said it before and I’ll say it again: The-Dream should’ve been nominated and won Album of The Year. Hell he should’ve gotten a Grammy.
CBS Defends Bleeped Lil Wayne, Eminem, Drake Grammy Performance
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1631016/20100201/drake.jhtml
I like your statement about the Grammys not giving Hip-Hop props for its impact. Things haven’t changed much since the Grammys debacle w/ Jeff & the Fresh Prince.
I really hope they drop that version with the guitars of Forever, lol. I hope that wasn’t spur of the moment because that band really made that whole performance epic.
what track did the initial verses Weezy and Em come from or was it brought about for the grammys?
My dearest Dave,
It is simple. CBS got shook with Janet’s nipple slip in the SB. If the Rush Limbaughs and Bill O’reillys of the world don’t like something they are on the air talking about it the next day. Then CBS catches hell for it.
Who does Hip Hop have that is a loud voice? Steve Harvey? Michael Baisden? Barely…Thus we get jerked. Chances are the statement that was on MTV.com was ready before the broadcast of the Grammy Awards. But they knew that it would just fly. I mean which Hip Hop act would refuse to perform at the Grammy’s?
