When Manchester United loses/drops points, I experience a draining feeling which sours the rest of my day (sucks that the games are in the morning here) — a feeling no doubt shared by any sports fan with an unhealthy attachment to a club/team. It’s one thing when an actual match does that to you. It’s another when it’s caused by unrelated boardroom BS, such as the news that Manchester’s ungodly amount of debt—incurred when the US-based Glazer family borrowed hundreds of millions to purchase the team in ’03 — will hopefully be serviced by two thousand and seventeen. And how? Bonds.
Bloodclaat bonds.
Foolproof plan, eh? Roundabout 800 million dollars is the goal. I’m no finance expert but looking for nearly a billion dollars in investment via these means is the white-collar equivalent of sticking out that Weezy cup for some loose change on the corner of Linden and Springfield, knowing damn well that every penny from them Mickey D’s patrons counts.
Suddenly, the 80 million pounds received from the sale of Ronaldo doesn’t quite seem enough. Surely, they could’ve got an even century, right? Or perhaps when Wayne Rooney leaves for Barcelona (We still got Mikey!), they can hit that number on account of him being an English and all—balding head and scouser accent to boot!
This must be the apocalypse, innit? First, the loss to down-and-out Leeds. Soon, Manchester will be god-forsaken Leeds.
*Opens cutlery drawer*
I just may be getting ahead of myself a wee bit much, and this could be a financial masterstroke given the club’s profitability… dependent upon selling talent for 80 million pounds every year (White Pele next to go?). But stranger things have happened (see: Leeds, goddamit). Perhaps, in some strange twist of fate, my broke ass might be able to snap up some of those bonds. I shall save thee, beloved United!
First thing’s first, though—a match ticket, as I’ve yet to catch a game live.
Whoops, can’t even afford that.

once a blue, always a red. there is no way rooney is going to barca. not a chance.
the glazers sucked the life force out of the club however, and the fans will feel the effects of this for a long time. they operated in a typically brash bumbling american manner- buying something they didn’t need and didn’t understand w/ money they never had, on credit that eventually comes back to bite the borrower in the ass. sorta a macrocosm of american consumer spending in the past 10 years.
with every crisis though, results on the pitch make everything better, and despite playing like trash for most of the season, were still in a good position to win the league and challenge of the cl.
things could be worse, we could be liverpool.
Stop panicking. The club will be fine. The way business is conducted at Old Trafford may cause some concern, but it is still preferable/more respectable than the Chelsea/City approach. No?
That said, I wouldn’t give a fuck if Man U went on a Leeds style tailspin (will never happen). GOONER for Life.
Sorry mate, but Man Utd ( and I can’t stand Man Utd just so you know) have just reported a profit of 50mil for the year of 2009. Also, one thing people don’t relaise with these clubs is what the debt ACTUALLY IS.
The debt is there mainly because of loans the Glazer family took out to purchase it in the first place. Most debt on the club is personal to the Glazer family porduct, and even if it was integrated into the club’s wealth, the club has the success and turns such a huge amount of money per year that the debt is no more than a glorified ‘mortgage’ that the profit will pay off year on year.
And the end of the day, Man Utd are such a huge entity that theyre worth the hassle for both the owners and the banks bankrolling the debt because everyone involved knows that because of the amount of money the club generates that its good for it.
The debt is only face value. Look at the bigger picture.
That 50 million profit is only because of Ronaldo’s sale. Take that out of the picture and its a 30 million loss.
Hopefully Man U’s hot/cold performances this season will allow Arsenal to get back in the mix. They easily play the best football in the league right now.
John O’Shea > Pele + Maradonna combined.
There, i said it.
Just be happy you’re not a Juventus supporter at this point in life… I stare at the cutlery drawer every day daring myself to do it. If only someone would go Assassin’s Creed on Jean-Claude Blanc, Giovanni Cobolli Gigli and Alessio Secco…
Trying to sell and backstop a business with bonds ain’t going to work in this economic climate. GO CHELSEA!!!

And? Profit is profit. They earned that like they earned every other penny by developing and making Ronalod int the player he is today.
You could say “well take out their money from merchandising and its a massive loss”. How is that even relevant! Thats profit, you don’t “take it out of the picture”!

@A Weezy. You don’t have a clue about pain mate. Juventus are one of the most illustrious clubs of all time. Try being a f**king Newcastle United fan!
@Adam, at least Newcastle’ll win promotion, eh? And going back to the profit business, having to sell 30-40 million in talent every year isn’t a healthy situation.
Juve sucks, lol. Still no worthy replacement for Pavel.

I feel your pain… Newcastle has been run into the ground by horrendous management the past few years. I’m surprised Mike Ashley hasn’t been the victim of an assassination attempt yet. Today’s Toon is a far cry from the Alan Shearer/Shay Given/Nobby Solano days. I wish your club the best. It’s a rough time for Black and Whites in England and Italy.
Fuck Juventus. Fuck Man U. Fuck Chelsea.
That’s all folks.
Liverpool fan, Deen?
Fuck Juventus. Fuck Man U. Fuck Chelsea.

That’s a lotta unwarranted hate for Juve… ManYoo and Chelski I understand. Either way, it might be about time to start preparing for the departure of your golden boy Señor Fabregas.
yoooo i fuck with this blog on a whole ‘nother level cuz of this post.
MANU 4EVER LOL
A lot of hate in this thread, lol. So, I’ll add my two pence… fuck Liverpool.

This man speaks the truth. When Rooney leaves, Giggs retires, we’ll still have Johno, lol.
since an american fucked up theyre team guess we gotta give them the yankees
Inter FTW!!!! Eto’o better than your life.
UNITED !!!
The bonds mature in 2010, meaning that the 800 million they took on to pay for the team will have to be paid then. From now until then, Man U. has to pay its lenders (the people that own the bonds) interest on that debt. The Club has hired financial advisers to look into whether or not the debt can be refinanced because they are starting to feel the pinch of all that debt having to be serviced. My prediction is that the Glazer family will lose some of their ownership stake in Man U. in return for their lenders easing up on the terms of their debt. It’s called a debt-exchange offer where the lenders exchange some of their debt for ownership in the company. i.e., the banks/bondholders will reduce the amount they are owed by a certain figure and use the difference to acquire an equity ownership in the club. But who knows?

Cheers mate, nice to hear people havent forgotten about us! And don’t get me started on Mike Ashley or this comments section will be 20,000 words long of straight hate and disgust.
Always been a fan of Juve in Italy to be fair (mainly because of Del Piero I must admit). I was reading an article on Ciro Ferrara and the management today, looking like they may be out the door soon, especially after that Milan result earlier on.
The good thing about clubs with european pedigree and a massive fanbase is that no matter how bad things get the phoenix always rises from the ashes to be successful again in the future. A club support of millions can’t be held back (yeah, I made a semi-hip-hop related pun on a hip-hop website relating to football).
I seriously can’t believe it. I pray Rooney is ok for the cup!

What a stupid thing to say mate. Ronaldo smashed the transfer record by millions. Yes, agreed profit is profit but the glazers did sod all to develop ronaldo into the player he is that was just more evidence of the genius of Sir Alex Ferguson. As for your ridiculous comparison to taking merchandise profit out of the picture and taking the sale of Ronaldo out of the picture what are you going on about. Manchester United is the most popular football team in the world and there will always be a profit from merchandise, however, there is no possible way United can sell a player each season for 50 million pounds to cover the club’s losses. I never comment on these sorts of blogsites but that comment was just utterly ridiculous and really gets my blood boiling as an avid Manchester United supporter.
