Video: Stolen Moments With DãM-FunK

01.25.10 Written by Gotty™

DãM-FunK is the subject in filmmaker Dan Canyon’s Stolen Moments over at SpineTV. In the clip, the boogie funk ambassador speaks on ladies, influences, UFO’s (referenced on “Brookside Park”) and making music for extraterrestrials, musical progression and Stevie Nicks, Patrice Rushen & Flying Lotus as parts of his dream line-up for a performance.

And with that, his mystique and charisma grows.

01.25.10 Written by Gotty™

When alllll of those Atlanta artists got together to do promo for SMKA’s The 808 Experiment: Vol. 2, a whole lot of filming went down. Besides the “WTF is SMKA” & “In Your Own Words” videos, they also shot a handful of freestyle clips. The one above features the Señor Kaos, Jay West & Playboy Tre, backed by Parker Smith on guitar. Below, Dreamer of Hollyweerd and FKi take their turn @ the mic. And there’s still another installment featuring The Canz & Tom P, plus one more to go.

And it was all filmed by our people, The SP Agency, who happen to be putting the finishing touches on their video coverage of Friday night’s release party. *Beats fist to chest* We got you covered.

“Roll A Tight J…”

01.25.10 Written by J. Tinsley

Chances are the majority of people will never live the life Hip-Hop’s self-proclaimed king, Jay-Z, happens to lead. That’s not to say he doesn’t vividly portray it in his rhymes of elite  grandeur living either. Depending who you ask, it’s a cross between a sign of maturity and a sign he wants to separate himself from the very public which adores him. Regardless, the quality of his product still manages to satisfy most. Looking beyond his string of hit songs, “hidden gems” find themselves as some of his more enjoyable records. Take “Party Life” for example.

Found on 2007′s American Gangster, the song showcased a lifestyle the title alluded to. Celebrity friends, fast living and more money than one could ever imagine litter this ode to success. Slightly different from the original, a blended remixed version co-starring the late Marvin Gaye afforded the song and entirely new perspective while keeping the same feel. The nostalgic aurora allows one to bask in the glory of their own personal accomplishments, regardless of magnitude. So the next time you reach a memorable milestone in life, cue this record and vibe out. As he put it, “roll up a tight lil’ J, drink some wine whatever your vice is, ya know?”

Above all, “Party Life” authenticated Jay was right on one thing. You couldn’t knock the hustle it took to get him there.

Jamie Foxx – “Quit Your Job”

01.25.10 Written by Beware

Seemingly out of nowhere, Willie Beaman just dropped a hit with a presumptive pink slip called, “Quit Your Job.” I imagined that in between banging married white women and installing more mirrors in his mansion, Jamie might have a hard time matching the success of “Blame It,” but this perfectly produced ditty about ditching the 9-to-5 by Grammy-Award-winning-producer Tricky Stewart is guaranteed to have half the planet singing along in the economy we’re in. “Tell ‘Em Why You Mad, Rex…”

01.25.10 Written by J. Tinsley

The Jets may not be heading to the “Big Dance,” but the organization and their fans can find solace in knowing they’ve got one of the most entertaining coaches in all of sports. He knows football too, but that’s besides the point. Rex Ryan is one of those guys who is a classic quotable waiting to happen win, lose or draw. He’s intense, to say the least, and has never made any apologies towards his attitude. And nor should he. Read the rest of this entry »

Curren$y – “Breakfast” Video

01.25.10 Written by Gotty™

It looks like Creative Control got the syntax right this time around so I’ll let them do the creative description to this Spitta video that essentially about waking up in a Utopian state.

We don’t have the power to change the weather as of yet, but those of us with means can change our location to fit the climate we desire. In Curren$y’s latest video for his song “Breakfast” he does just that going from sleeping through NYC’s harsh winter to waking up in a sun drenched Jamaican villa. Mally – “3 Part Eulogy”

01.25.10 Written by Patrick M.

Mally brings the heat even in the depths of Minnesota winter on”3 Part Eulogy.” The dead in this case are Mally’s competition and he doesn’t seem to be mourning, rather gleefully celebration his status as the last man standing. The execution is on point, including the bouncy keys-n-drums of ‘Rem. But he’s still organist to Mally’s preacher and the main attraction shows growth since Read the rest of this entry »

The Name Is Tag…

01.25.10 Written by Beware

Unless you’re from Detroit, you’re probably not too familiar with Nametag. Shit, I am from there, and just discovered dude. I don’t get around as much I’d like to though, which makes it hard to keep up on the scene at times.

Anyways, my Rokits have been blasting this kid’s scorching hot new single, “The Product” for the past 20 minutes or so and I’m thoroughly impressed. Hoverboarding over Black Bethoven’s menacing mold of melodic chants and hangover-heavy claps, the 24-year-old shows his veteran status on the mic by effortlessly spewing out enunciated, inter-syllabic punchlines that would make Joe Lewis proud.

My catalog got wack artists pissed off/ like the Klan knowing the President is Black…” What I like most, however, is that instead of sticking to the typical, D-Boy ‘get money’ shtick or some overused Dilla affiliation, Tag is spraying his name up, down and around the Motor City by simply keeping his bars above par and his grind steady.

If you’re interested in hearing more from this new breed of Detroit MC, check out Nametag’s blog and Myspace to catch up on his catalog.

Then, you can download The Soul System EP when it drops in February.

Andre Nickatina – “1-Flight” Video

01.24.10 Written by Beware

Andre Nickatina is casual elegance.

Despite damn near 20 years in the game, this Yay Area veteran keeps his key as low as his eyes and boasts a track record fresher than most. On “1-Flight,” the new slapper from Dre Dog’s Klothing-inspired 13th (!) album Khan!: The Me Generation, the story remains the same. Reciting first-class raps over elevator music from Cloud City, Filmore’s finest puts his conversation with Read the rest of this entry »

Mr. Hudson Feat. Kanye West – “Anyone But Him”

01.24.10 Written by Beware

Ever since first Mr. Hudson first blast out the gate with his borderline hit, “Supernova,” the jury has always ended up hung. Not “Hung” like that mediocre HBO show starring the wackest Punisher ever, but hung in the sense that Mr. Hudson’s track record has been spottier than a heroin fiend’s arm despite his mentor Kanye claiming he’d turn the UK singer into Franky Bloke Eyes 2035. The song with Cudi was forced. The feature with Hov was cheap. That string quartet shit was ear suicide.

However, it seems as if the G.O.O.D. Music fam was just waiting for the appropriate timing and song to capitalize on their only chance for a European takeover. Read the rest of this entry »
