“Smarten Up Dumb#ss, This Ain’t Bum Class”

01.27.10 Written by S.Cadet

With Creative Control’s cameras rolling (again), the spotlight is on Mighty Mos this time around as he drops a verse on “White Drapes” for Michael Sterling Eaton’s Mictape Vol. 1. Those wary of Mos’s propensity to sing may be happy to hear he doesn’t croon one bit in this short video. Instead, he lays down some by-the-book bars over a beat laden with chords, a weighty bassline and ambient vocals. Mictape Vol. 1 will also feature artists like Curren$y, The Cool Kids and Stalley among other contributors yet announced. There’s no date on the album so far but with a lineup like that it’s something to keep an eye on.

And as an extra, here’s an unreleased Mos track that didn’t make The Ecstatic and was liberated by Andrew @ FSD.

Wale – “O Let’s Do It” Freestyle

01.27.10 Written by Gotty™

Don’t get it twisted. I’ll never get tired of this beat (never ever ever ever © Chris Tucker). Mr. Folarin goes for his and I applaud his yeomen-like work ethic. But this Fat Trel guy, we may need to put him on the Hip-Hop Doppler radar, just to keep an eye out. Read the rest of this entry »

Smoke DZA – “Marley & Me” Video

01.27.10 Written by Gotty™

With direction by Creative Control, Smoke DZA and his own Marley clan — Devin The Dude, Curren$y, Asher Roth & hookman June Summers — get together to film the video for the smokers anthem “Marley & Me.” Watch for cameo appearances from Nipsey Hu$$le, Dame Dash, Cory Gunz, Va$htie, Sacha Jenkins, Shiest Bubz, Push Montana, The Kidd Daytona & Cuzzin Todd. I just hope the Hip-Hop police are on a donut break and not paying attention right now.

Bun B & GLC – “Happiness Over Riches”

01.27.10 Written by Gotty™

Before technology caused dramatic change, artists and producers would all hunker down in dark studios, bouncing ideas off each other to craft music. It’s in that spirit that Ruby Hornet’s DJ RTC and co. gathered artists across the map to do short, on-the-spot recording sessions they’ve chosen to compile and release called Closed Sessions Vol. 1. With “Happiness Over Riches,” Bun and GL take production by The Weathermen and an obvious chemistry to lay down their version of lyrical scripture. Read the rest of this entry »

Cookin’ With Blunts & Duke Da God

01.27.10 Written by TC

When he’s not documenting the days of Hell Rell, Duke Da God likes to cook sour fried chicken with sour diesel.

The newly-crowned Emeril of the hood is the leading man (no homo) for what is hopefully the first of many installments of Cooking With Blunts. The recipe requires very little ingredients; perfect for those nights when the cubbard is on some Mother Hubbard shit. Read the rest of this entry »

Tef Poe – “Michael Jordan Mode”

01.27.10 Written by Patrick M.

Tef Poe previews the upcoming TSS-backed Money Never Sleeps with “Michael Jordan Mode.” Tef taps into the MJ psyche, willing to destroy the opposition on his way up the mountain no matter the cost. Victims include women and children, Mystikal and Aaliyah fans. As usual Tef relies on his Space Jam wordplay, referencing everything from Vess Soda to Reading Rainbow. His raw intensity on the mic is well complemented by production’s eerie keys. Read the rest of this entry »

Prank Calling All Captains…

01.27.10 Written by Beware

If you get a couple kicks out of f*ucking with your friends…read on.

Last week while sheet creeping with my lady, a very odd voicemail popped up from my phone. It was strange in the sense that my outdated Samsung never rung once, but more so because of the extremely random message that was left. “Hi (Beware), um…I usually don’t do this, but…your friend gave me your number last night at the bar, because when you were there I thought you were cute and well, I hoped you might want to go out and get a drink sometime.” Blah blah blah yada yada yada. As the young lady continued to tempt, I became more and more confused as to how this happened considering I hadn’t even been to the bar in weeks, when the extremely believable female finally said, “Oh and one more thing…I’m not real.Read the rest of this entry »

The 808 Experience: SMKA’s 808…Vol. 2 Release Party Recap

01.27.10 Written by Gotty™

808 Experience: Vol 2 Release Party “The Recap” from The Smoking Section on Vimeo.

We’ll be putting up footage from some of the individual performances later on this week but we wanted to get this footage out there to help recap what was already a wonderful experience as a whole. From the behind the scenes manuvering, the cooperative spirit displayed by all of the artists involved, the hitch-free & energetic event…and an excellent piece of music,The 808 Experiment: Vol 2, to boot.

“On Jan 22, 2010, Atlanta celebrated the release of SMKA’s The 808 Experiment: Vol 2. From 6-9pm artists, fans and media packed in WISH for interviews, a photo shoot and free copy of The 808 Experiment: Vol 2. Then everyone migrated next door to the Star Bar for a night of cheap drinks and great performances. The venue was at capacity all night long with a 30 minute line topping 50 people waiting to get in. DJ Sol Messiah and Terry Urban played musical DJs throughout the night and keep the party going till 3am. However, the highlights of the night were the unbelievable performances put on by the artists. There were 13 performances including Nappy Roots, Yelawolf, FKi, Tom P, Hollyweerd, Aleon Craft, Grip Plyaz… and a special surprise performance from Pill. All the artists performed their song off the 808 Experiment: Vol 2, with a few surprises thrown in the mix. The night was capped off by an improvised set by Terry Urban, Alien the Drummer and Parker Smith on guitar. We had an amazingly talented band behind the artists, which resulted in one of the best hip-hop shows the city of Atlanta has ever seen. If you don’t believe me, ask someone who was there.” [SMKA]

Respect to everyone involved. Extra shoutout to SMKA for being instrumental in helping to hold down Atlanta musically. And the footage was shot by The SP Agency. Get to know the name now.

Gorilla Zoe – “Like A Drug”

01.27.10 Written by Beware

Most of us were caught off guard when Gorilla Zoe showed an odd taste for echoing European pop on his last release, Don’t Feed Da Animals. But now that he’s back to the money on his new and energetic, electric-guitar-infused banger “Like A Drug,” Zoey expresses a more customary palette with an insightful menu fit for a baller. Freddie Gibbs & Mikkey Halsted – “On My Own” Video

01.26.10 Written by Gotty™

A few seasons back, I made the remark that the Midwest was next to grab the spotlight. It took the region (or maybe the media coverage) a bit to catch on but the time is finally here with Gibbs & Halsted, two of my personal favs, as two of the torchbearers. On “On My Own,” the artists bring their usual dose of keen-edged social commentary & lyricism, giving listeners a glimpse into the neighboring cities of GI and the Chi through the eyes of two of their most promising denizens. Barack Obama Fears John Wall

01.26.10 Written by Beware

During a press-conference thanking the Kentucky Wildcats for generously generating and donating a cool million via their recent “Hoops For Haiti” telethon, President Obama not only acknowledged he spends his free time catching up on NBA-bound John Wall’s game, but that he has no desire to get schooled by the young man people refer to as the next Jordan Harold Minor Penny G.Hill Kobe Vince Carter LeBron.

That’s the best decision the President’s made in months.
