Every couple of years, we ponder who will emerge as the next great hope to represent for the ladies on the mic. While Nicki continues to garner all the attention on the mainstream level, Jean Grae plays the role of Slim Charles. Always in the mix and capable of handling more responsibilities, she’s content to shine just outside the spotlight. Stopping by Toca Tuesday’s this week, Jeanie dropped off a new exclusive. Flanked by Styles P. & Talib Kweli, the trio wreck havoc over one of the ever busy Ski Beatz’ tracks.
With her upcoming album Cake Or Death and Reflection Eternal’s Revolutions Per Minute on the way, this may very well be the “Year Of The Blacksmith”.

Yes!!! Her “Jeanius” album was dope, I hope that this upcoming album will be an equally as or more dope follow-up.

american idol ATL session
Man I really wish Lauryn Hill was still making music and ripped it instead of Jean Grae.
@ Clean: Hanh??? (Gillie the Kid voice) I mean Lauryn is dope but I don’t think the two can be compared. Lauryn is vocalist/emcee, Jean is just a raw emcee. Apples & Oranges to me.
actually, lauryn is pretty raw on the mic….besides her amazing vocal talent…any real head knows that….but jean killed this, and i wouldnt trade her for lauryn…..theyre both dope emcees…but this is jeans moment on this one.
Can’t we have both Jean & L-Boog? No one was complaining when we had Fox & Kim.
@ We: True, Lauryn is raw (when she wants to be) but Jean gets extra-gully with the wordplay, plus she gets a bit more intricate with her rhyme patterns. Still, I wish Lauryn would get back to emceein’ at some point, not to take Jeans’ spot but to put some force & balance in the current crop of female artists that are available to be listened to.
y’all are trippin. I compare every female emcee to Lauryn and none come close in the entire universe when shes on her grind. Its not apple to oranges. Its apples to apples. Jean’s best lyrics don’t even come close to Lauryn’s on an off-day. ya Dig?
Lauryn > 98.9999% of regular dude emcees
word to your mother
The last time Lauren spit a heat rock was like 10 years ago……c’mon son!!!!
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! (Like a 15 year old girl)
Oh My God! I Love Jean Grae! I’m So Glad She’s Back! I Can’t Wait To Hear It! Oh My God I Can’t Believe She’s HEEEEERRRRREEEEEE!
@ Dough: LMFAO!!!
Must Lauryn Hill be mentioned whenever a dope femcee drops something?
I mean I enjoy L-Boogie as much as the next head, but until she (ever?)comes back to form I’m not going to complain about Jean Grae filling her spot.
JG
Jean Grae has always, and will always be dope. Her album WILL be purchased..
good havent heard hardly anything from her since she retired. shes great. next rapper that says they are retiring needs to get beat up by a group of people with real jobs tho. jean grae excluded.
Jean is raw.
JEAN GRAE is the best female emcee out there right now. Nicki….Ehhh she’s aaaight, but Jean…She’s something else.
yeah, jean grae is the dopest, mzanzi representing!!! keep it up
