I usually try to stay away from being overly negative, which the internet likes to calling “hating.” To a degree, it’s pointless. Opinions are like assholes, they full of shit © Blu. But, given this forum and the chance to speak, I have to say that…remember when I mentioned that older artists in Hip-Hop shouldn’t be afraid to lead the way and experiment with change in order for the art to grow? Jay’s done that time and time again, critics and fans’ opinions be damned.
But this telethon song with Bono and Rihanna is buns.
Yeah, I know. Haiti needs the dough and attention. I’m for that. I’m for all of these pop culture behemoths coming together to create what they believe to be (and perhaps should have been) a monster of a track. But it sounds every bit disheveled as anything the South has done to set Hip-Hop back by a few years. BlackBook’s Joe Coscarelli writes the following critique of the song.
“Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)” begins with a somber Hov hook over sad, tinkering keys, with the lyrics a clear rush job: “The sky falls/ And the earth quakes/ We’re gonna put this back together/ We won’t break.” The verses are similarly sad and vague, dropping empty pleas for solidarity in a grave tone, but amounting to little substance. Rihanna and Bono sound like struggling lounge singers, or performers at a county fair, and the necessarily morose subject matter sounds sappy instead of moving. Tepid jabs at government response fall flatter than the vocal notes in the bridge, with the whole thing begging the question: Why? [BlackBook]
“We Are The World” this isn’t. I assume their intentions were sincere but the trio’s lyrics lack any spirit and end up going errant like an incomplete pass. The chemistry was obviously lacking, even been Jay and Shy Ronnie Rihanna. While we’re on Rihanna, let the record show that perhaps I’m still side-eyeing her for butchering Bob’s “Redemption Song” previous to this latest gaffe. (Aside: If you’re interested, Melanie Fiona’s version is slightly better than Rihanna’s. Maybe, as a music community, we should agree to leave Tuff Gong’s music out this or least set up an approval process.)
This isn’t to suggest that you shouldn’t donate (you can pay 99 cents, get the track and donate all in one swoop by clicking here). And kudos to all of the A-listers who did take the time to make appearances and encouraged donations to the tune of $57 million in 24 hours. So for all that went wrong with this song, at least some right things happened by the end of the night.

It was killing me how many people were swearing this song was crack after a single performance. It is weak sauce, even if it is for a great cause. On to the next one.
Should’ve sang a song we all know and love and change the lyrics just a teeny bit to fit the situation. Looking at you Beyonce.
Good mention b/c Beyonce’s song was cool.Thumbs up.
Agreed. This song is cheeks. I expected more from the level of talent involved. Re-do!
So Gotty, what you’re saying is…you don’t like the song?
you people are flacky, i thought anything with jay and rhianna is an automatic classic

We can all live with that . The Marley Clan even steered clear of studio covers.
I thought the song was aight. That swipe at the gov’t was weak, that hook was a bit off. Robin and that hat had to go. But I think that I just hate on her because I can’t stand her voice.
The song was pretty good, in my opinion. I especially like the fact that they decided to do something ORIGINAL. Alot of the other performers decided to perform CLASSIC songs from back in the day… and in my opinion: THATS A SELL OUT> Especially when they got country singers SLAYING black “WE Shall Overcome” songs LITERALLY. No body said anything about KID ROCK and Sheryl Crow slaying our song. Also Billy Joel and a slew of other artist not doing their songs justice. Not 2 stray from the topic at hand, but the telethon was complete FUCKERY. Most of the Celebrities did this just 2 get some GREAT PR time…
Anyway, Jay-Z x Rihhana x Bono’s track was good. Alot of the other songs that were performed on friday were performed thousands of times before, by hundreds of performers. You have to give them credit for putting “Stranded” together in the amount of time they did, while still making it relevant to what the telethon was about… THIS IS ALL MY OPINION THOUGH!!!

lol
Kingdom come 2 in stores now
Song was buttcheeks and corny but I’ve never liked these type of songs. I know it was for a good cause and all but shit I would have prefered these artists did something else like go to Haiti and get the media to follow them/put more focus on how desperate things are there.
Whatever tho, if it brings in more donations it was worth it.
Was Bono on that track? I’m still dumbfounded that he used Rihanna instead of someone talented. And as for what Word said above, I agree but isn’t this just “Minority Report pt. 2″? And ironically, I went to look for my Kingdom Come special edition joint and the cd is missing! Now, I didn’t go all “Stolen Moments” on it. I just looked under my coffee mug… *sips coffee, plays “30 Something.”
I thought the song was cool for what it was. It didn’t blow me away but I appreciate the sentiment.
I thought it was cool. I don’t know. *shrugs*

DEAD!!!!!!!! JUST! DEATH! EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BAAAHAHAHAHAAAAA!
Didn’t like the song, but I feel there’s a *measured* level of the ends justifying the means with things like this, being that the people of Haiti are probably a lot more concerned with the aid itself than the way in which it is being raised.
It is what it is. A song written very quickly over the phone and with text messages.
It was new and original and I appreciate and respect that more than new intrepretations.
