I’ve been a tad bit under the weather this week, which makes blogging and just thinking a tough gig. Since listening to music is a key component to this thing, I guess I ain’t been on my deen this week. Mainly, I’ve been relegated to editing & doing a lot of emails. My music listening? Well, when I’m in this space, I always revert to jazz. Always. It’s my life preserver, keeping me balanced and motivated. Coincidentally, there’s usually a 87% chance that the album I’ll lean on the hardest (bar no genre) will always be Kind Of Blue.
Which made seeing this 1964 performance of “All Blues” by Miles on The Steve Allan Show that much more rewarding. For the record…

Gotty, I dont kow if I ever told you, but I listen to “Kind Of Blue” once a week.
I have E.S.P. but I think Kind Of Blue just stank mo’ betta
I’ve listened to Kind of Blue once and I just didn’t get it. Will I understand when I’m older?
I got heavy into jazz a couple years back, even played the sax n shit. Unfortunately, i stopped for some reason. Maybe I’ll pull my old cds out.
i dont i you ‘ll get it when you older….i guess you just gotta have it find you
it’ll smack ya in the face like blao
Close your eyes, focus & ackowledge that there’s multiple instruments providing layers to each song. Read the liner notes to see who’s playing each joint, then key in on listening to their part. I dunno…jazz is just one of those things to me. @ first, I just liked it b/c I liked the melodies. Then the more I listened read & learned, the more I liked it. Even though there’s no words, every song generally has a story to it. Sometimes, there is one, other times you envision your own as you listen & associate it w/the song. I guess it’s so abstract & open to interpretation.
