Never in my life did I imagine that MTV could make me laugh more than The Office.
I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion. It’s what allows me to stand up on the soapbox and express my thoughts. But I also realize that whenever I put my thoughts to the keyboard, they are fair game for whoever to scrutinize and pick apart at their discretion. So they can call So Far Gone the best mixtape of the year (& one of the best of all time), I tipped my hat to them and thought “they finally got something right.” It’s still debatable, but not out of the question. Besides, we like to debate around here.
Then they had to put out the rest of the best mixtape list. But they didn’t just pull out the soap box to give their decree, they sat all 300 pounds of their corporate influence in the dunk tank and picked some unassuming 5-year-old from the crowd to throw the ball at the target. We all know what happens next…

MTV: The Hottest Mixtapes of 2009
50 Cent: Forever King
50 Cent: War Angel
Lloyd Banks: 4-30-09: Happy Birthday Volume Four
The Clipse: The Road To Till the Casket Drops
Drake: So Far Gone
J.Cole: The Warm Up

Lupe Fiasco: Enemy of the State: A Love Story
Nicki Minaj: Beam Me Up Scotty
Nipsey Hussle: Bullets Ain’t Got No Name series
Snoop Dogg: I Wanna Rock
Triple C’s: White Sand
Tony Yayo: Swine Flu series
Yo Gotti: Cocaine Muzik series
Young Dro: R.I.P.
Just on a casual glance I can say that The Road Till The Casket Drops released in 2008. Seems as if they would have known that, considering it’s an online publication that “dedicates” so much time to mixtapes. I also think it’s safe to assume that had Game & Young Buck still been affiliated with G-Unit that they’d be here on somewhere, even if they had to compile all the Loosies they dropped this year. I can see either Forever King or War Angel being here but not both. I’ll give Banks the benefit of the doubt, but you can’t tell me a series of Yayo mixtapes made the cut. And what’s up with mixtape series being included? Pick one and call it a day.
And where’s Gibbs? I see at least five spots he could replace someone at.
So much more can be said about this list, but I’ll leave it to y’all. I want to save my energy for the next time.
Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Gucci Mane, Lead Mixtape Of The Year Runners-Up [MTV]

Curren$y & Wiz : How Fly????
young jeezy’s trappin aint dead? wtf
I’m no Trey Songz fan but Anticipation was hella good, not even on here.
Atleast Nipsey got some love but Nicki? Really?
Everytime the come up with a cockamamy list; it just shows they should stick to reality tv.
No Bobby Ray?!!
you can’t tell me a series of Yayo mixtapes made the cut.
=======================================================
Even Yayo would call bullshit
Cool Kids & Don Cannon: Gone Fishin’
Wale & 9th Wonder: Back to the Feature
La the Darkman & DJ Drama: Living Notoriously
Pac Div: Church League Champs
Havoc: From Now On
El Prez & Dale Danja: Perfect Strangers
Willie the Kid & DJ Drama: The Fly
Cam’ron feat. Vado & DJ Drama: Boss of All Bosses
10 Deep & DJ Benzi: The New Deal
Raekwon & DJ Absolut: Blood On Chef’s Apron
J. Cole: American Dreamin’
Freddie Gibbs: ALL TAPES!
Young Chris & Don Cannon: The Network
Harlem’s Cash: On My Way to Harlemwood
Plus many, many more!!!
“With no album since 2005, Tony Yayo knows that mixtapes keep him alive. Like Lloyd Banks and 50 Cent, Yayo the Talk of New York stood ten toes down on the asphalt, waving the G-Unit flag with multiple solo releases, none making more noise than his morbidly titled Swine Flu 1 and 2. No radio play? No problem. Yayo mastered the art of the viral video this year, using visuals to promote his tapes like they were actual LPs.”
This has got to be a joke so something. I mean I can’t even get past the fact that it starts by saying he has not put out an album in FOUR YEARS but he can still put out a high quality mixtape series. Well done MTV
Pac Div: Church League Champs
=================================
this is the type of tape you’d think MTV would eat up
Bobby Ray, Curren$y and Wiz, Gibbs….they got a few right and then bombed on the rest.
including Yayo, Banks, and TWO 50 Cent mixtapes is a straight up joke.
Yayo not even close…he came with a mixtape this year???? He STILL raps???? missed me with that bullshit
Nobody has heard or cares about Lloyd Banks mixtapes so he can keep releasing those boring ass tapes that only GUnit stans like….R.Kelly – Demo Tape?!?!? missed me…Jadakiss and Clipse had mixtapes this year??? Once again….only that panel heard those mixtapes.
It’s a decent enough list for a commercial entity but Tony Yayo isn’t, has never been and will never be considered hot or dropping anything “hot”. The boy is straight garbage.
Pac Div: Church League Champs & Raekwon & DJ Absolut: Blood On Chef’s Apron were 2 of my favs this year
and i am surprised…i thought the mtv list would be even worse
All this list tells us is that MTV – like most mainstream media outlets – is subject to commercial pressures which skew their programming. It’s like the year MC Hammer won a Grammy (and Vanilla Ice was nominated) Everyone knows it’s not reflective of what the core fanbase would rate as the best music, but arguably MTV doesn’t cater for the core fanbase in the first place – so why pay attention to their top 10 lists?
A good 80% of that list is some bullshit.
I dug some of Banks music this year, but not enough to put it on any year end list.
Not a credible list anyway.
wow, you are just REALLY angry. calm yourself MZ. woo-saah
The List seems fairly accurate…who would you all of wanted?
I really dug Chip’s C-Show…this is a lote better than “Mtv’s Top 10 of ’09″….
seems on point…
Angry? Nah, bruh. It’s all in good fun. Where’d you get angry from? & what’s with the name, I’ve seen your blog.
inflatable ferret’s top mixtapes of ’09! http://inflatableferret.com/articles/the-inflatable-ferrets-top-10-mixtapes-of-2009/
forgive us we admit we missed on fredde gibbs Dj Skee present: Freddie Gibbs and The miseducation of Freddie Gibbs as well as and Pill’s 4075: The Refill all three tapes are worthy of any top mixtape list.
I gave MTV praise for calling Drake tops.
But I have to question what else was @ work when they were naming their choices here. it just reads like their was an agenda, given what was included vs all the diff tapes they left off.
Clevland Show, How Fly, Church League Champs, Gone Fishin, both F. Gibbs, Diary of An ATL Brave (Donnis), UKNOWBIGSEAN, B.o.B vs Bobby Ray, Lupe, The Natural, the Wyclef Drama, J. Cole tape some of my favs from this year.
^
Totally agree AK. Pac Div’s was fire; Wale; AND The Cool Kids…c’mon!
Young Dro!?!?! Is he even relevant?
currensy, gibbs, shit im shocked theres no wayne on here. how bout notorious LAD????
I agree 100% Theo and AK, Chip’s “The Cleveland Show” was dope as fuck…hell, in my mind “Movie” should put it on the list automatically, but that mixtape is sick 1-27…maybe he just didn’t get enough exposure?
Agree on Bobby Ray too…can’t wait for his album to drop…he’s one of the most talented and creative cats out there.
it loosely translates to addicted to music in japanese
LOL, loosely? I’m almost afraid to ask what the literal translation is.
I Take It No One Remembers Donnis’ Diary of an ATL Brave?
hold up…didnt drakes come out in 08?
Same ol mTV
These should have been on any legit list
Wale & 9th Wonder: Back to the Feature
Pac Div: Church League Champs
Sean P: Kimbo Price
as much as lupe kills it there is no way his name should be on this list, that mixtape was shocking!!!!
i only said loosely because i don’t fully remember my japanese translations. only some.
so loosely doesn’t mean anything awkward or weird in case you were worried.
yomitsuki ongaku= addicted to music
Pac Div – Church League Champs
Wale & 9th Wonder – Back to the Feature
Cool Kids – Gone Fishing
Young Chris – The Network
I thought for sure that each one of these would’ve made the cut.
I understand lists are meant to be debated and discussed but I think people forget there’s a difference between fact and opinion. And just because you have a lot of niggas agreeing with YOUR opinion doesn’t make it fact either. Freddie and some of your favs didn’t make the list. Rather then bitch about it all passive agressive like, make your own damn list. This was MTV’s list. MTV’s. See that apostrophe s? That denotes ownership. It’s THEIR list.
TSS does this all the time too lol. List for whatever comes out, passive aggressive post gets posted to show they disapprove and offer nothing.
“Show you how to do this son”
Please do.
Lists suck.
^ killjoy.
did anyone even listen to Tony Yayos shhit? i dont even remember when he dropped the bullshhit….and Currensy? who cares, dude sounds like hes 11 and half asleep….fuck em….the rest of the list, half is proper half is garbage…
MTV has now confirmed their irrelevance when it comes to music. Congrats!
MTV has now confirmed their irrelevance when it comes to music. Congrats!
*DITTO* We ALL know MTV is no longer a relevant authority on music. Point Blank.
Joell Ortiz anyone? Anyone? No? Hmm.
The Tony Yayo mixtapes are dope.
Yall better just keep listening to that overrated Lil Wayne clone Drake but stop talking bout music.
Yall telling me this aint dope?:

Mixtapes without multiple songs from multiple artist suck!!!
When will the album become commonplace again??
@ GRANDfathercloc
Soon. And I can’t wait.
^^i won’t hold my breath. The younger the audience the more it seems they can’t appreciate “QUALITY” over “QUANTITY”
wow #epicfail smh
