In another lifetime, I remember that once we were headed for a night of partying. We were on the block and, before we could clear the area, we got pulled over. Three of us. Me, Cookiehead and KP. The usual routine: get out the car, provide paperwork, “do you mind if we search you?” etc. The cops start their pat down of each of us, but it’s not an issue. Nobody’s dirty because the general rule was to empty your pockets before you got in the car. Let them do their frisk and this too shall pass. The days where dancing solved all the dilemnas in music videos are probably long gone, but Omarion dedicates his single full of “agressive content” to the King Of Pop anyway. Looks to be a hybrid of “Beat It” and “Bad” which would have been epic, had the choregraphy been a little crispier. Nice to see Jay Rock get some mainstream shine if nothing else. Sometimes artists come out of nowhere and take over your playlist without warning. For me, the latest artist to have done so is a soft spoken yet eloquent jazz singer named Melody Gardot. Ms. Gardot’s sophomore album My One and Only Thrill was released this year on Universal Records and came in at #42 on the Billboard charts, yet it still successfully flew under my radar until I caught it on one of the sites I check. The album itself finds extravagantly produced string arrangements contrasting beautifully written guitar and piano melodies to which the singer delicately expresses the poetry of a helpless romantic and the memoirs of a tough childhood. It’s literally “so much white it’ll hurt your eyes” outside in DC currently. Roughly 20 inches of snow is covering the nation’s capital, which means I have more than enough time to kill until I head home to celebrate Christmas with my family. As we all know, Jeezy’s been on a mini-tear as of late remixing some of the bigger records on the charts. The Snowman has always been personal favorite of mine, even back when people swore on their unopened copy of Illmatic he was “killing” the genre. With that in mind, I did some diggin’ through my e-crates in search of old records I hadn’t heard in awhile.
