If ESPN doesn’t win some type of award for their “30 for 30” series, something is criminally wrong. It’s doing exactly what I have been saying has been lacking from sports (and music in a sense), the ability to successfully tell a story from a deeper perspective. Last week, “The U,” a two-hour documentary focusing on the University of Miami’s football program, was shown and was subsequently their highest rated film to date. From teetering on the brink of cancellation to becoming the most controversial and successful program in history, it was all explained in depth. Coming from a Florida State fan, it had me glued to the TV for the entire time and laughing at the fact just how cocky (and talented) these dudes actually were. They won a football game once by tallying over 200 yards in penalties because they’d celebrate after every play. Now I see where Chad Ochocino draws his inspiration from.

One of the interview subjects for the piece was Miami’s own Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, who was equally as controversial and successful during the late 80′s and early 90′s. Recently, Dan Lebatard caught up with the former front man of 2 Live Crew for an entertaining interview. Luke co-signs Dan’s comment about Jimmy Johnson being Miami’s “first black coach”, why he wishes he would have paid some of the players and the reason he fully supports trash talking. I may be in the minority here, but college football needs that type of edginess back to the game. Forget cordial, embarrass somebody. That’s what I’d do.
You know, if I had the talent.

I keep hearing about this documentary and how funny and entertaining it was…I NEED A LINK!
The U was one of the greatest documentaries i’ve ever seen. damn i wish i was alive back when they were running shit. they woulda been my favorite squad no doubt.
Luke had me dying laughing. Lamar Thomas did too.
saw this……. great. And I remember the U with Schnellenger till now. Miami was the team during those eras… not Florida or Florida State!!!! Everyone identified with the U because they were basically giving a finger to opponents and mainstream america on the field. Most times off the field.
i literally just finished watching this (dvr). this shit was hilarious. definitely took me back to when i was real young wearing my orange & green proudly. and back then, since i live in cleveland, not even knowing about what ohio state was. everything was about miami then.
and at the end, showing dwayne (the rock) johnson and all nfl player intros saying “The U”…man, good times.
and i have even more respect for jimmy johnson than i did before. with his perfect barney rubble hair.
Good looking on the link Gotty.
My uncles best friend is a Cuban whose parents fled to Miami when he was 2 years old after Castro took over in Cuba. Dude was a Miami alum, hardcore Miami fan who moved to Chicago in like 88. Because my uncle lived next door for part of my childhood and his best friend was always around, and I was always around them, I became a fan of the U by default. As a little El Rosado in the late 80′s/early 90′s (I was born in 85) I became immediately fascinated by this team and rooted for them heavy. I had a U starter jacket, shirts, everything. I also relished in the dissaproval from teachers and othe authority figure adults who didn’t like the U or my support of them. And to this day, I’m still a die-hard Miami fan. I got accepted there for college and was salty when I couldn’t go unless I decided I wanted to take out 50K in loans over the 4 years. I’d do that shit for a professional degree but not no fucking bachelors lol. Anyway, I digress. They’re still my fave even though I don’t watch much college football. In terms of college football though I’ll rep the U over my alma-mater ( u of Illinois) all day everyday and twice on Saturdays. This documentary was the shit, saw it last week, now I’ma dl it, good looking with the link G.
PS – Jacory Harris, heisman next year. He’s VY 2.0
yeah I said it!
“write it down, take a picture, I don’t give a fuuuuuck” – smokey
I am have he Miami documentary on my DVR however I am not sure it can top the one on Len Bias. Check out some of the future episodes from this show; I am especially looking forward toReggie Miller vs NY and the one on the Trial of Allen Iverson (back when he was at hampton).

Funny, me and Tins were just talking bout Miller blazing the Knicks the other day.
The U 30 for 30 was good. Speaking of 30
Karmaloop 30% sitewide code Hal30
and it’s really 30% not 30% for first time customers and 15% for regulars . lol
Man Tins, I just finished watching this and was ready to write something up on it… I think I’ll take a nap.
Funny, me and Tins were just talking bout Miller blazing the Knicks the other day.
=====================================================
Yup, we sure were. Reggie “Fuckin’” Miller. That one should be good.
LOL my apologies MZ. This joint was one of the better documentaries I’ve ever seen.
Nah man do you, I’m looking forward to that Miller one as well.
30 for 30 is officially DVR’d after this.
I gotta check the timeline again, but you definitely have to check out the one on Len Bias and the one on Ali’s last fight. Those are instant classics.
This doc was DOPE. I was laughing and smiling throughout. My Grandma lived down there. I was an FSU fan until I went to the Miami v FSU game in 83. Damn that was a good time, I was like 12 or something. Never saw so many beautiful chicas in my life.
I was around when they were running shit. I remember when they were in the Big East and they played Temple in the Philly at the Vet.
Miami was up like 38-3 at halftime and they were on the sidelines wildin dancing, joking, talking on big ass cell phones and this was 89-90 and that’s why The U is still my favorite Squad
Gotty, that link is definitely appreciated.
If anyone has a link to the Bias one, id be greatly appreciative.
the Len Bias one was one of the greatest sports documentaries ive ever seen and ive seen alotta documentaries…Maybe its becuz i live in MD and go to UMD but man i was so close to crying lol!! but anyways ESPN’s “30 in 30″ series is the best series on TV right now and it must win an Emmy or something.. “The U” one was prob the second best documentary on there, it was great too… ive watched it twice and its still great… the Muhammed Ali one phenomenal too! man i cant wait till the nxt one!
the one on Len Bias should have been in a movie theater and charged folks 8 bucks a pop…
do you realize bc of Len half of the laws on crack came into being… i had no idea… yo they indicted his friend and ran out the coach… i was young when it all went down and had no idea it was that deep.
I can remember when Len died. TV wasn’t what it was so it was on every magazine and newspaper cover. Jet, SI and some other mag all came to house at the same time and he was on the cover or was the feature story.
^^^and people were ready to kill brian tribble, just because…they say if len was around micheal jordan would have been number two…
I was around during these times. I am not a fan and you couldn’t help to love the team for doing what they were there to do.. WHOOP A$$.
But I remember when Geno won the Heisman and then lost in the Sugar Bowl. GOOD TIMES.. Roll Tideeeeeeeee
Listened to the podcast with Bill Simmons – how many times can one person say, “White people be freaking out yo!” They didn’t change the world.
Please someone send me that Len Bias link.
gracias.
no this fool didnt just say gino torretta….smh i had a lot of gino’s cards, toys, and other paraphernalia, but i never understood why i didnt hear about him after he left college than it all made since…most hesiman trophy winners are overrated….
ps. i still think colt mccoy should of won that shit this year. but mark ingarm is that work!
Great Documentary, I grew up in South Florida and remember when they were coming into Broward and Dade to recruit, that was unheard of prior to Schnellenger becoming Coach. Coral Gables was like forbidden territory for many of us and we lived right by it. When Irvin and the Blades Brothers from the neighborhood went there we couldnt believe it and thats when I became a fan. They changed the game and you could go to any college game in the country outside of the HBCs and not see the kind of diversity you saw at U of Miami games then and now.
They should have at least 8 National Championships in my opinion. I hated when Testeverde won the Heisman, then he played like crap in the Fiesta Bowl and threw 5 interceptions and then Gino won it and the same thing happened, he didnt play well either, but he only lost 2 games in his three years starting. He got drafted by the Vikings and Denny didnt groom a young QB he kept going out and getting old guys, McMahon, George, Moon and Cunningham..
I hope the curse of the Heisman doesnt bit Ingram, he’s a good kid as much as I can’t stand Nick Saban. LOL
Go Canes.. Its All About The U.. They will be back..
I went to school at the U during late 80′s, early 90′s and went to every home game and a few away. Watching this doc. made me remember how fun those games were to be at. Also, my roomie knew the equipment manager who sold all the practice jerseys at the end of the year and I got Gino’s. Great documentary.
that documentary was sick!
I am canadian but I have a lot of relatives who live in Miami and I was there along my mom, brother and sister during the 1st riot(I was 6)
and I remember the Canes and I used to hate them because I was so jealo’t us
and I wished I could’ve played for them…lol
They were so fascinating and I think that college football needs that
edginess,it is a chore to watch.
But to go back to the movie,it was the best documentary I watched along Len Bias.
