My name is David D. and I’m a Saints fan.
Yeah, I know you are too. Now.
But I’m a lifelong Saints fan. I made it through the “Aint’s” and Mike Ditka years. So this year has been…bizarre. Somehow the Saints became the best team in the NFC and are favorites going in to every game. And I honestly have no clue how to react.
For example, a couple of weeks ago the Saints were up thirty over the Patriots in the 4th quarter and for the life of me I couldn’t step away from the television for fear that the Saints would blow the game. Cubs fans, I’m sure you can relate.
When the Saints lost to the Cowboys, it was eerie. For the first time, I was disappointd and surprised by a Saints loss. Is this what it’s like to cheer for a winning team? Ironically, it took a saints loss for me to realize that I’m now rooting for a top team. This made me reflect on some of my prized memories as a Saints fan. I thought I’d share them with you.
The Good:
Vs. Carolina Panthers, September 11, 2005 — One day somebody is going to make a movie about this game. Mere weeks after Katrina rocked the city, the boys in black and gold marched up to my undergrad abode of Charlotte and won on a dramatic last-second field goal. Yes, the rest of the season went to the crapper, but tell me you didn’t get goosebumps watching this.
Vs. Atlanta Falcons, September 25, 2006 – This was another post-Katrina moment that I’ll never forget. The first game back in the Superdome pitted the Saints against the heavily favored Falcons. Yes, we had a lot of emotion going to the game but it’s still the Saints we’re talking about so a victory was a long shot. But from the moment this punt was blocked all the way through the rest of the year, 2006 was a season for the ages.
The Bad:
The River City Relay, December 21, 2003 – Seven seconds. 80 yard. Half a dozen or so laterals. This was one of the most remarkable plays in NFL history. So why is it in the “bad” category? John Carney missed the extra point to tie the game! I was in New Orleans when this happened and I swear you could hear a pin drop in the city as this was week 16 and we were in the middle of a playoff race that was eradicated with a missed goddamn extra point. I still can’t talk about this game without the lip quiver.
Two Words: Kyle Turley. November 4, 2001 – Kyle Turley has been in the news lately because he’s worred he may have brain damage from head trauma brought on by the rigors of the NFL. I could have told you that in 2001 when Turley did his best Stone Cold Steve Austin impression and threw a few birds after ripping a Jets player’s head helmet off and tossing it across the field. The problem? The Saints were in the redzone and down a TD with a minute left. The ensuing penalties cost us the game. Kyle Turley is still not welcome in Louisiana.
The Ugly
“The Aints” — You know how when sports teams suck, fans wear paper bags over their heads to protest? Well, we invented that! You know how the Lions are now? We were that through the 80s. This started in 1980 when we lost 14 straight games. No I wasn’t born for this, but the name “Aints” still rings bells and gets brought up by anyone talking trash about my squad.
The Wedding — Ditka is one of the greatest coaches of all times (Of all times! © Kanye). But his worst move was trading all of the Saints 1996 draft picks, two 1997 picks, 3,000 beignets, two Bourbon street transvestites and 32 gallons of Hurricanes to help Ricky Williams move to the Big Easy to sample the city’s best weed. Running joke of the late 90′s: What’s the difference between Ricky Williams and a dollar? Answer: You get four quarters out of a dollar. Oh yeah, dude once wore a wedding dress.

Here’s a short version of the Saints history.
They sucked for like 50 years
Then they got Aaron Brooks and sucked a bit less.
Now they got Drew Brees and theyre good.
Who Dat? The Cowboys. That’s Who.
While people may shit on Ditka for that trade to get Ricky Williams, NFL Network posed an interesting ass question.
The Redskins had all those damn picks and in the past twelve years only have a SINGLE playoff win to show for it.
I own a Saints starter jacket, and also Aaron Brooks, Deuce Mcallister, and Ricky Williams. I think that alone is evidence that I am a true fan lol.
I wish those soggy bastard zero success.
ATL Ho.
They had a nice run…but they are getting knocked out first playoff game no matter who they play in the second round..
David D., no band wagon rider here. i think the last three years (and twice this year) i have shared the story of being at the Saints 1991 playoff game with the “Cajun Cannon” Bobby Hebert when they played against the Falcons and Deion got a INT in the Fourth to ruin our chances of being out of mediocrity.
I have watched every weekend since I was in 4th grade, and this is my 20th anniversary of being a Saints fan. Jeff Blake, Jim Everette, Aaron Brooks, Kerry Collins, Danny Wuerfuel, Heath Shueller, Joey Harrington, the Billie Joe’s (Hoebert & Tolliver), etc. It has been a rough run, and after Haslett did not work out, I was not sure if Sean Payton would….I am so glad he did. Geaux Saints, the Ghost of Rickey Jackson, Pat Swilling, and Dalton Hilliard are routing you on, for a job they could not finish.
Brings a tear to my eye…
Pats in the Super Bowl Rematch
^^ don’t forget the ghost of Craig Heyward!! man, I miss ironhead, he made me a Saints fan when I was 8. And I can sympathize with you re: the ’91 playoff game vs. the falcons – if I recall correctly, Michael Haynes (the falcons WR) pissed on us too that game. then the saints signed him and he sucked. Same with Jim (Chris) Everett.
Season tix for the past 4 years. Fan 4 the last 29. Man that 1st game back in the Dome was crazy. I’ve never seen sports be so emotional or bring so many different kinds of people together. Who Dat bebe, Geaux Saints!!!
See, it’s people like the few in here that gives me a small smidgen of support… REAL supporters of their teams.
Sadly, that’s a mere 10% of all Saints fans now.
Craig Heyward….damn, you almost got a tear outta me. That big happy summabitch was one of my favs, along with the following: Morten Anderson, Sam Mills, Willie Roaf, La’Roi Glover, Cam Cleeland (when healthy, he never developed), Chuck Commiskey (OL, who is a friend of mine, blocked for Hilliard in 1986 &87), Joe Horn, Sammy Knight, Norman Hand (yeah i said it), Micheal Lewis (was delivering beer for Budweiser, tried out and became an INCREDIBLE kick returner), Deuce McCallister, and too many others to name(just had a blast looking at the roster from 1989 to 2006, that is why this post is so long).
the thing is since Payton took over, there are players on his teams that I will always remember as all-time great Saints: Will Smith, Roman Harper, Mike “ahead of my time on the dread locks” McKenzie, Scott Fujita, Jonathan Vilma, Mike Karney (miss him, but Heath Evans has been great) Devery Henderson, Malcom Jenkins, Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Pierre Thomas, Charles Grant, Mike Bell, Reggie Bush, Robert Meachum, Sedrick Ellis, Mark Simoneau, and our Defensive & Offensive MVP’s of this year, Darren Sharper & Drew Brees. I would love to start saying we are gonna take it, but as a Saints fan, I never count a win until the game is OVER!!!!
NFL is deep, and I hope we can beat the Vikings, Cowboys, Colts, Eagles, and Chargers of the league. I love my Sunday’s. Hopefully, this is the first of many years to come that we are consistently a contending team.
I’m not a football fan but I was born and raised in New Orleans so obviously everyone I know is a HUGE Saints fan. I was in Nola Saturday and couldn’t find anyone who wanted to do anything but watch the game so I watched too. Unfortunately they were the same Saints I remember from back in the day. I hope they can make it to the Superbowl (and win) for all their die hard fans but since the game against the Cowboys is the first game I watched all season I’m thinking did they really play well all season or did every team they play just have a really bad day and they lucked out? lol I know that sounds ridiculous but wow watching them play I was shocked they were 13-0.
it look funny
Do you want more interesting?
Joe DeCamillis has been around a few kickers that have played a long time in the NFL Draft (Jason Elam, Morten Andersen) and he believes Nick Folk will be one of them, too.
The Cowboys cut Folk Monday after missing 10 field goal attempts this year and signed Shaun Suisham.
“He works his craft the way you’re supposed to work it, so it was a difficult decision obviously,” DeCamillis said. “You don’t want to see anybody struggle and he was struggling. I think he even knew it. I’ve got the utmost respect for him, wouldn’t surprise me if he started kicking well again the league. He just kind of went into a little funk and unfortunately we couldn’t get him out of it. It’s disappointing on my part because you hppe to do something to revive it and get him going in the right direction and it just didn’t happen.”
Merry Christmas! And have a good time!
I jumped off the Saints bridge long ago.. never going back.. I am happy for the success but I can’t ever come back. But I knew they would be good one day.. hell even the Rams had a great run.. the NFL makes it easier to go from craptastic to fantastic.
That said Lions fans.. concentrate on hockey or .. Hip Hop!
The Saints had me legitimately spooked as a Bears fan going into the NFC title game in 2006-07 season cause their offense was sick. Good thing the Chicago winter came out in full force to slow y’all down and thank you also Reggie Bush for taunting Urlacher en route to scoring that TD that cut the lead to 3, that shit woke up the entire Bears team and they came out and smashed the rest of the game.
I agree with the homie Chris Searl. Fuck the Saints & Saints fans worldwide. Go Falcons.
That is all.
AV
^ Falcons aren’t even in playoff contention.
I am an aint’s fan Morten Anderson stand up
I agree with you…
As a lifelong Saints fan myself (born there), I’m surprised it this year. We could have had a year like it two years ago. I live in VA now and I was a little offended when someone show me in Saints gear and asked if I was a “bandwagon fan.” I’ve always repped the N.O. properly…
I was in N.O., last week, for the Dallas game and I got a feel of how the ppl feel about this season. The city has always loved this team…
