For the life of me, I’ve never understood why 98% of people make New Year’s resolutions. They’re virtually obsolete by January 15 anyway. That being said, the prospect of entering a new decade is amazing and potentially successful pending the right mindset and work ethic. By the time December 31, 2019, arrives, I’ll be, God willing, 33 years old with hopefully an admirable and ever-evolving legacy etched to my name. Whether it’s dealing with music or a world-class shrimp boat captain, it really makes me no difference. I just want to be great.
Throughout my first semester at Georgetown, I found myself revisiting a track I’ve always held in a high regard and the album even higher. The intro to Common‘s Be (my favorite album from the guy) serves as that record. Starting with the beat, Kanye laced him with a foundation which reflected my mindstate and the concept of the song. It was reflective, yet progressive. Motivational and lyrically beautiful. Yeah, all that wordy stuff. Com blessed the beat with wisdom like only the Chi-Town wordsmith could. It was the perfect intro. It got right to the point with no hook, just lyrics which would begin to cement the album as a classic from the moment I pressed play. You see, he was looking towards the future when he spoke about gazing into his daughter’s eyes. He even criticized “his people” for not attempting to grasp their true potential. All stuff that remains relevant some four years later as we embark on a new decade. That’s why I love music. Shit is timeless.
“The chosen one from the land of the frozen sun
Where drunk nights get remembered more than sober ones
Walk like warriors, we were never taught to run
Explored the world to return to where my soul begun
Never looking back, or too far in front of me
The present is a gift…and I just wanna be…”
So whatever party I’m at tonight, I’ll be sure to put my drink in the air, with these bars serving as the soundtrack for the moment, and look forward to the next 3,652 days. A legend is coming.

I think I’m the only person in the world who didn’t like Be.
By far my personal favorite intro of all time.
Great post.
damn i cant believe i do not own this album yet. may it be my last pickup of the year. on to the used cd store.
Wow. No joke I’ve been sayin the same thing about this track for years! This intro was the intro Kanye’s “Good Morning” tried to be.
I think I’m the only person in the world who didn’t like Be.
===================================================
Lol everyone can’t like everything man. Personally, that is one of the best albums to throw on and just chill to. Com x Kanye out did themselves on this album. And “Faithful” with Bilal is audio heroin.
BE > Like water for chocolate
but just barely
and i also wonder whose on top in bed Serena or CommonSense. haha she is a thick chick!
I’ve never heard this album, but that intro rawks!
Good shit J. Tins (and good luck/opportunities in the coming decade).
Any post that involves Common is a winner in my book.
And co-sign that this is an amazing opener but I won’t hear any slick talk about Good Morning either.
*Throws some side-eye E’s way*
Now everyone go get fucked up tonight!
Fuck that album. Resurrection is where it’s at.
Maybe my favorite intro track of all time.
The instrumental is just beautiful. Don’t forget to credit Dilla.
Ahhh to BE 23 again. I wish I could get a Mulligan on that one.
Great write up J Tins.
I’ve decided to spend my NYE at church. I don’t know when to stop when I drink, so I’ve decided to spend this one single holiday sober, and not rebos (drunk).
Like Water For Chocolate>>>>>>>>>>>Be Any day. MAN PLEASE i’m not going to get into this conversation again
That bass IS sweet..a heavy intro for a heavy album.
*off-topic
Happy New Year and continued success to the TSS fam (2010 is an hour away here)
also…if you’ve never seen Roy Ayers live, I’d recommend it.
There’s nothing better (when watching performers) than watching someone who truly enjoys/loves what they do, it makes for a brilliant show. He’s a beast with those mallets.
I too will not get into the Com discog debate lol. But “Be” ranks up there w/”The Genesis.”
Yes Great Post JT- I believe TSS had the album intro discussion earlier in the year nice to be revisited. There will be no shots @ Serena, retreat sir-lol.
Like Water For Chocolate>>>>>>>>>>>Be Any day.
^
Preach!
I always thought this track was everyones little gem that they loved, its so good. And that’s almost a bad thing, everytim I go to listen to the album I play this track over and over and barely hear the rest of it.
Everytime there’s a Common related post, a discography debate happens.
Only at TSS.
Be > Finding Forever > Like Water For Chocolate
How many times must I explain this lol
Great post. Music is definitely timeless.
TWO WORDS:
Electric Circus…Nall, I’m just bullshitin’!
Pago, nothing wrong with that homie. Regardless of what everyone does tonight, just make sure you do it safe.
This is in my top 100
Be > Resurrection > Like Water For Chocolate > One Day It Will All Make Sense > Finding Forever
that intro is what got me “back” into being a serious hip-hop listener; i casually heard some stuff but it was Be and Fishscale that did it for me
Be is a top album. Just to throw my hat into the ‘discog’ debate its Resurrection > Be > Like Water For Chocolate > Finding Forever, but to be honest, the guy has three possibly 4 or 5 solid (even dare I say great) albums in his career. Thats 4 or 5 more than most artists so it just shows the impact this guy has had.
