yelawolf-strapped

It’s great when an artist is consistent. Most rappers finding their way in this confusing industry seem to have an agenda to release so much music that everybody knows their name, even if those listeners can’t name specific songs. Sometimes, it works out perfectly and garners positive attention, like in the cases of Crooked I or Gucci Mane. However, the artist frequently ends up fading into obscurity without much notice a la Sonic the Hedgehog. I much prefer the approach that Alabama wordsmith Yelawolf has been taking this year, where the rapper drops original songs off every month or so keeping the fan base hungry for more and gaining new followers with every leak.

The latest song to find its way to the net is a menacing narrative-driven track with some light piano notes carrying Yela’s verses into a busy chorus full of synths, strings, brass and 808’s for him to warn foes over. His southern accent is as heavy as the words that he speaks and his flow is as polished as can be. If he continues to deliver songs like “Pop The Trunk,” he will most definitely find success in the rap game. Because, while the songs he releases aren’t necessarily the most original in subject matter, his approach to each song is packed with enough distinctive flavor to please any open-minded Hip-Hop listener.

The first leak from the forthcoming Trunk Muzik mixtape, hosted by DJ Burn One. Consider yourself warned.
