When people ask me what the greatest song of all time is, I try to sound smart and say something by Gil Scott-Heron or Marvin Gaye. Or maybe “Juicy.” But my soul knows my true answer. “Fire and Desire” is the answer.
For two years out of my life, when I got into the Knight Ryder (1998 Ford Taurus. Black. Leather interior. I’ll tell you stories about it when you’re older), I would start the drive with Rick & Teena’s masterful duet.
I spent three years on a pilgrimage in Siberia learning Tuvan throat singing so I could hit Rick and Teena’s notes simultaneously. It’s really a sight to behold. And yes, I know Rick’s monologues by heart.
