It’s great when an artist is consistent. Most rappers finding their way in this confusing industry seem to have an agenda to release so much music that everybody knows their name, even if those listeners can’t name specific songs. Sometimes, it works out perfectly and garners positive attention, like in the cases of Crooked I or Gucci Mane. However, the artist frequently ends up fading into obscurity without much notice a la Sonic the Hedgehog. I much prefer the approach that Alabama wordsmith Yelawolf has been taking this year, where the rapper drops original songs off every month or so keeping the fan base hungry for more and gaining new followers with every leak. If you were to ask any Hip-Hop head what city produced Theophilus London’s illuminating “Humdrum Town,” I think Brooklyn would be the absolute last place they’d pick. Even though the concept revolves around a small town, this remarkable rapper/producer has delivered a radio-ready single unlike anything I’ve ever heard delivered from the rap capital of the world. Instead of preaching poverty over your typically beloved boom-bap, this earth-dwelling MC politely rides his dance-infused drum-track and empowering signal synths with poetic, positive lyrics taking the driver’s seat, never once sounding corny along the way.
