In ’95, DJ Premier managed to capture lightning in a bottle for the release of Livin’ Proof. On the production side, not a weak track can be found and even now it still sounds as fresh as day one. The word commonly used when discussing the album is “arguably” because where Premo reached what may be his highest level of production, Melachi & Lil Dap…well, let’s just say they were young kids who gave it their all. Nevertheless, the soundbeds created are enduring.

“Don’t talk the talk…”
Love this album despite the obvious lyrical shortcomings. The whole vibe just sums up what I was on at that point in time.
As much as they sucked, Dap & Mel did their thing. And somehow Premo’s music made them seem older, wiser & more entertaining than they were.
This shit also set a wicked trend though. Y’all know what I’m talkin about lol.
They’re lyrics became an instrument on this one.
I still got the original 12 inch and it still gets spins from time to time…….I remember I spit some lines to the beat Jeru was talking over to my answering machine just so chicks thought I was a rapper!!!! Good Ol Days…..
…I’ll smack ya Moms in da head with a metal pipe…
Gotty!!! happy thanksgiving bro…you are the God of this HipHop blog shit(nodickride)…if you ever in Inglewood hit me on the ringer we gonna find some mischief to get into…keep it gangsta bro!!
I was just in Inglewood…
Damn no one is even gonna mention the album cover? It says there’s an exclusive track. I just checked my copy and it doesn’t have a track called that on it. Anyone ever heard this song? Are you privy to the exclusivity?
“So Called Friends” was actually on a compilation that Guru put out called “Ill Kid Presents Vol.1″
Ringtone material!!!!
It’s so ill that they didn’t put Sacrifice on this “Instrumental Album”. Not that I can blame Preem for making that executive decision. Maybe the sample didn’t clear or something, maybe it just wasn’t meant to be, but that track is truly special – one of the top 25 motivational track of all time. And one of Premiers most beautiful and subtle works on those highhats. Plus the intro is basically the best shit EVEEEER.
