Today’s Headline: “Dame Dash Is Saving Hip-Hop”
Everything Else By Gotty™ on November 6, 2009 at 9:42 pmClap Cowards wins today’s attention-getter by talking about Damon Dash.
“What separates Dame from Jay is that Jay is still in the business of (among other things) selling records as Jay-Z The Brand. Dame is no longer in the spotlight. He’s dabbed in film and retro kicks. He relinquished the Roc-a-fella name years ago. This freedom from asinine meetings with record execs and appeasing homogenized radio playlists and fading retailers and fickle fans is almost too much to handle for a guy used to hustlin’ and conquerin’ and letting everyone know that while he’s at it.”
I always liked Dame. Same reason everybody else is cool with Dame: he’s “the asshole.” You don’t like him, but he’s got the gut instinct of a gambler, forgets his losses & keeps going. He’s straightforward & you know where you stand. A gentleman, in a sense. And with the BlakRoc project on deck and the reported trio of rhyme animals he’s brought together as Center Edge Territory, he’s in good shape to grab the game’s attention again by releasing dope music.
And even though ‘Ye prospered, I still give him the side-eye for sticking with Jay when he acknowledges that Dame’s the first one who believed in him.

real talk dame as of late has seemed to rise above the BS and that black roc shit he put together was real dope.
i commend him for not selling out and sticking to his lane even when it wasnt the most lucrative thing to do.
I never enjoyed the thought of Dame taking Ls…I’d like to see him do good.
I always wondered where Jay-Z would be if it weren’t for Dame.
I mean, sure Jay-Z was putting out good music, but it always seemed like Dame was the one who was marketing Jay-Z.
No one can buy your product unless someone knows about it.
If you think about it, Dame’s been a force behind a couple of large movements. Jay, Cam & Jimmy. He’s got what it takes but obviously he shit on some folks while on the rise w/Jay. I’ll buy the BR project just to help put him back in a shot-calling position.
Dame was Vince McMahon to Jay’s Hulk Hogan
Creatively?
Dame > Jay
Dame always had vision
I been sleeping – this is the first I heard of Centre Edge Territory. Mos, Jay E and Currensy sounds like a dope project.
Dame gets high ratings in my book – hope for the best with those projects – will be copping the Blac Roc project too.
^ you didn’t sleep. Word just came out yesterday.
Do I think it’ll release? I’d say decent odds. I’ve heard that Curr has been hanging close w/Dame for a minute now & Dame is obviously in the studio for the other project & a notorious workaholic.
good post but Jim Jone’s album-play-movie thing that he put together for Pray IV Reign seemed unfocused and if my memory serves me his album didn’t do so hot.
did anyone see this play?
This just in: Centre Edge Territory will drop their album the same day as Lupe, Kanye and Pharell’s supergroup CRS ans the Doom/Ghostface project. Lets all hold our collective breaths….

Hmmm…downloaded some BlackRoc songs, while the music is OK, what is the audience for this? Black Keys fans won’t cop and nobody buys rap compilations…unless there’s a hit in there somewhere (haven’t heard one) this project will not sell. Bad idea.
why you think me and dame cool? we assholes. thats why we hear your music in fastforward. cause we dont’ wanna hear that weak shit no morreee.
i’m copping i don’t see why its so unreal that this would have an audience. i’m copping simply because i like the idea of people doing what they feel, i’m totally for that. this project and Dame’s moves right now in general are free of a lot of the industry bullsh!t and the end result has to be good music and better yet fast output. the currency, Jay elec project already being 6 tracks in… i mean c’mon!
There are people that are simply just fans of good music and they will cop, i don’t think any real fan of music confines themselves to one genre
I agree with realist^^^, it’s time for real music. My favorite music is live recording music because it’s so “free”.
People be taking the scientific method to music. Real Music comes from the soul (gut).
I’ve given up on holding my breath for releases, when it comes, it comes.
Maybe the new approach should be unorthodox & random releases without promo.
Perhaps it is better to throw product out there without all the traditional promotion and let it spread word of mouth, hand to hand, @ shows etc.
No matter what music is gonna be free online somewhere, but imagine creating a buzz where people actually wanted a PHYSICAL copy of your music, either for artwork, ltd edition type stuff, lyrics, dvd, or just because it is the ish!
Jay needed Dame and Dame needed Jay. I always say it was the perfect marriage (II).
Dame would go in and fight for whatever Jay and the “team” that was Roc-A-Fella needed. If he did not get a fair deal (on anything), he would walk.
His voice was his “muscle” (whereas someone like Suge used to actually use his)…
But so was Jay’s.
Anyway, I worked with Dame last year – never again. It was a nightmare. I cannot knock his hustle, but he really did not have one at the time. He directs and orders when he has to realize that he actually no longer can.
That said, I wish to see him succeed again simply because of the aforementioned character trait – he grinds 24/7.
I just no longer see it happening with music on a financial level. This is about to be 2010 – it is no longer ‘96 when you could make money far too easily selling music.
Things have changed.
(And let us hope that he does not “ball to he falls” this time around provided financial success does meet him again)
And Kanye realized that your success in the BUSINESS of music it based upon that end/aspect.
Business Never Personal ™EPMD – he simply did was best for his career. Had he gone with Dame, right now, we would be hearing stories about how Dame was taking flights on private jets by bartering his production and stealing his publishing checks (i.e. Beans).
He made the wisest choice – trust.
That is how people end up broke with their careers washed up in music…
Being loyal.
I am loyal (to those deserving of it) in my everyday life…
But in music – nah.
But unlike the majority in the industry, rather than screw you over (II)…
I will just decline to work with you.
plzzzzzz
