Last week MTV debuted it’s 2009 Hottest MC List. And since they only discuss music on their website, they decided to make a week-long spectacle of it, instead of presenting the the list in an hour long show. They introduced spots #10 – #5 last week and the remainder of the list on air in-between Diddy’s latest reality show. Anytime you put together a list like this, you open yourself up for debate and criticism.
For the most part I don’t have too much of a problem with this list. It was voted on by fans, as well as the panel, so this is what some segment of America believes to be the “hottest” MC’s, for better or worse. Now, if this had been a list of the best MC’s based on skill alone, this would be far out of wack. But when you look into factors outside of music and skill set alone, you’d be hard pressed to get anyone to agree to a concrete list.
So without further adieu, here’s the 10 Hottest MC’s currently in the game, according to MTV.

My only question is where are T.I. & Eminem at?
Both have critically & commercially acclaimed albums as their most recent efforts. At least one of them should warrant a spot on the list. It’s obvious that this list isn’t based solely on accomplishments from this calender year with the inclusion of Young Jeezy, Kanye & Lil Wayne. All three basically coasted off their albums from last year & have done mostly feature spots.
And if I had to pull someone off the list, I’d go with 50 Cent. Whatever music equity he’s built with War Angel & Forever King, doesn’t make up for the countless stalled singles he’s put out while trying to put out Before I Self Destruct. ThisIs50.com is what’s keeping him hot these days.
I’m also kinda surprised that MTV held off on putting Drake #1. I mean they even started re-airing his old Degrassi show, back when “Best I Ever Had” was almost inescapable from being heard.

It should be Hip-Hop’s Most Culturally Influential then but obviously “Hot” encapsulates that sentiment according to MTV.
Gucci is “hotter” than most right now.
I think you can determine hotness by x (number of appearances)/y (how many of those were actually hot) = z (actual hotness).
Therefore, Gucci trumps all lol.

Its a list based on opinions which was 1st made to get MTV some credibility as being tastemakers in music – rap or otherwise.

A TON of yall are trippin. This is not the “greatest lyricist” list. Nor is it the “most quotables” list. This is essentially, if you took all of the radio and video programmers and asked them the artists most talked about, this would be the list.
I agree that Tip really hasn’t done much lately, but if you only have this list once a year, you got to give him a nod for dominating the end of last year. And if you’re gonna put Jeezy on here (who also has done nothing this year) or Wayne that high (despite the fact that his album gets pushed back more than 50′s), than you really have no excuse to not put Tip in there.
Again, with Em it comes down to what we’re listing. If it’s the “hottest emcees” he’s definitely on the list somewhere. If it’s “best album” then no. Keep him away from that list.
I thought the first year (with wayne at the top) they did a good job. But last year i only saw 9 rappers worth mentioning (in order; Kanye, Wayne, Tip, Jeezy, Rawss, Lupe, Game, Plies, Rich Boy and before you start i know plies is super wack, but he was hot last year…ala gucci this year) and Andre 3000 and 50 made it out of nowhere (though I liked the nod to Dre). And Jay was on there, despite not having anything hot for the past 9 months previous to the list.
This year, i’d say Jay’s back, Wayne’s fallen a bit, Drake’s scorching, Gucci’s up there. I’d take Kanye out cuz his album featured very little rapping. And if you’re gonna say “his album was hip hop despite the singing,” then we’d need to throw the-dream up there or R. Kelly. That sounds absurd right? well then take kanye off! I think i’d go:
1.) Drake – like it or not, he’s been the talk of this year
2.) Tip – c’mon, a #1 album, 3 top 3 singles, MTV even had a freakin reality show leading up to him goin to jail….that EVERYONE i know watched

4.) Ross (doubters need to be serious. This dude was in EVERYONE’s mouth for the first 6 months of the year)
