Public Enemy Teams With Sellabrand To Release Next Album
DIGITAL NEWS By Gotty™ on October 8, 2009 at 6:46 pmRaise your hand if you would pony up $25 for an album? A new album from Hip-Hop legends Public Enemy, because they are somewhat deserving of your support right? Well, that’s the hope of sorts as PE has connected with Euro site Sellabrand in a reverse effort to raise $250,000 towards the production of their next album.
Hip-hop pioneers Public Enemy have announced plans for fans to fund their new album – but also take a share of the revenues. The band are working with SellaBand to raise $250,000 in individual donations of $25. Fans chipping in will get a numbered copy of the album, but also a share of the profits – although exactly how this will work hasn’t been announced at the time of writing.
“SellaBand’s financial engine model goes about restructuring the music business in reverse,” says Public Enemy’s Chuck D. “It starts with fans first, then the artists create from there. The music business is built on searching for fans and this is a brand new way for acts to coming to create a new album with fans first, already on board.”
Credit where it’s due, Chuck & Co. have been rap pioneers when it comes to embracing the digital age & mp3’s so I don’t think they’re going into this blind to the positives and negatives. Reportedly, the deal allows artists to hold onto their publishing rights, a good thing. Since the full terms haven’t been announced, it’s not clear how profits work specifically or if those who donate $25 will receive anything in return.
One thing is for sure though. If it works and creates an efficient model for others to follow, it would be a resourceful avenue for newcomers and those stuck in dead end label deals.

Do fans get to help in the beat selection is the question.
^ if they did, I’d pay $25 for a Nas joint.
Not a bad concept…The company is European and P.E is still kind of a big deal in that loop. On the other hand the business brain says they need to play with the price point and the fan profit share thing is sketchy.
i heard TC is all for this. he’s bought every PE album after Fear of a Black Planet.
Boss Gotty, unrelated but did you all ship out those Mike Bigga Underground Atl joints yet?
It Takes A Nation of Million is STILL my FAVORITE hip-hop album…
what happens if there isn’t enough money raised? refunds?
Lol @ refunds. Prolly not, but that’s a good question.
And yes, I shipped the vinyl myself last week via Priority Mail. Should’ve been there. Email me.
I like this idea - a lot.
I am in.
(Especially since they have yet to perfect it. I will buy into it just to see the weaknesses and then make a profit off of the idea - all while helping them to record the album)
I like the prospect for quite a few artists as it puts some of the pressure on fan’s to prove that they really “support” their favorite artists. Hell, I can name 5-6 artists I’d put $ if it meant they delivered a quality album on the release date (no wavering on the release date either).

Exactly.
This is an interesting idea.
I’d also be interested in buying a small share in Terminator X’s Ostrich Farm in South Carolina.
Did you all know that an ostrich egg can sell for upto $300 at high class diners?
