Naming an album after a previously highly respected work (sometimes classic), can be a gift and a curse. Jay’s done it with his Blueprint series, Dr. Dre has The Chronics and Lil’ Wayne’s career has become synonymous for his Carter installments. Even Nas somewhat pulled off the feat with his 2001 release, Stillmatic. It’s a risky move, but if done correctly can have the artist resembling more genius than failure. In the latest issue of The New Yorker Sasha Frere-Jones has declared 2009 as the year Hip-Hop died. His main reasons? The Blueprint 3, Raekwon & Freddie Gibbs of course.

If I had to pick a year for hip-hop’s demise, though, I would choose 2009, not 2006. Jay-Z’s new album, “The Blueprint 3,” and some self-released mixtapes by Freddie Gibbs are demonstrating, in almost opposite ways, that hip-hop is no longer the avant-garde, or even the timekeeper, for pop music. We’re always looking @ oddball discoveries that better the lot of mankind. The wise one who discovers a cure for hangovers will be a rich man, one worshiped by men around the globe. When I was a raging alcoholic, my method for tempering a tough hangover was precisely what Joell prescribes @ the end of “Sunday Hangover”: drink more. However if it was Monday and I couldn’t, it was a mix of guzzling several Sprites, ingesting a few packs of BC powders and numerous trips to the urinal, trying to flush as much of the weekend’s toxins out of my system. Interviews on Time Magazine, Tavis Smiley and The Colbert Report have been stops on his tour in his new role as an author.
