Lushlife – “The Kindness”
AUDIO By Landon A. on October 15, 2009 at 6:43 pmNever judge a book by its cover has never been more relevant until now. Meet Philly MC/Producer Lushlife, an artist who may not look like a threat to your ear drums at first glance but beneath the kufi and white v-neck lies the heart of a rapper with a sound reminiscent of some of the Golden Era’s finest. Uniquely fresh indeed.
His respect for the architects is unparalleled as well, as he’s done tasteful covers of Jay-Z’s “Dead Presidents,” and Nas’ “It Ain’t Hard To Tell” as well as some early cuts from the Kool Herc era.
“The Kindness,” a track off his first U.S. release on Rapster Records entitled Cassette City, has Lush paying homage to my drink of choice with a screwed up chorus over beautifully executed sample work and drums that just seem to hold steady with any drunken gate. The kid from Illadelphia drops continous jewels, erasing any preconceived notions you may have had of him and welding the correlation between Hip-Hop and fashion.
If this is “hipster rap,” then score one hipsters.
Cassette City is in stores now and features Camp Lo and Elzhi as well as some indie rock players such as Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, Greg Saunier of Deerhoof and Ariel Pink.

Good shit LA.
This guy sounds nothing like he looks, which is good. Great hook too.
Lol I just can’t wrap my head around that voice coming from that dude. No chance he is just doing the production on this track? Oh well I guess all ranges of voices come out a all types of people (I see you Mike Tyson). Don’t judge a book by its cover indeed. Very dope song.
