“World So Cold…”
AUDIO By K1NG on October 17, 2009 at 10:09 amIf there were two posts per day on Freddie Gibbs for the next two months, I still wouldn’t think we were covering his music enough. Pardon my overtly Stan-like stance on the Gary-born lyricist. But in a game full of hyperbolic gangsters and effeminate hipsters, the presence of honesty that is found in Freddie’s music is the Hip-Hop equivalent to finding a valid opinion on a Fox News program.
This honesty, combined with his storytelling ability that is reminiscent of Scarface, birthed a track that is so multi-layered, so painstakingly real that I instantly became a fan of Gangsta Gibbs within just under four minutes. “World So Cold” is one of those pieces that distinguishes Freddie from the thousands of mixtape rappers fighting their way through the industry looking to “get on.”
The song is really just a guise that Freddie uses to write a letter to his unborn child. From nearly every vantage point imaginable, he describes in detail his short-comings as a man along with his plans to keep his child away from the kinds of evil that he is haunted by. He promises his son that he’ll be there for him financially and parentally, all the while confessing his excitement about becoming a father. It’s beautiful portrayal of the changes a man goes through when preparing to become a parent is only one side of the song, as a tragic ending that could only be conceived from first-hand experience derails the former intent and becomes an introspective look into his soul along with a spiritual justification for a heartbreaking moment in his life.
No matter how hard I try to explain the song, the only way to truly soak in its message and understand its power is to listen.

As a little extra, listen as Freddie links with one of his frequent beat collaborators, Josh The Goon, for an appearance on Gotham Green’s Haze Diaries Vol. 2 for the track “Nice As I Am.”

And for one more, here’s a short clip of Gibbs and fellow Midwestern rhymeslinger Mikkey Halsted in the studio, laying down a track for the upcoming Maja 7th & Fake Shore Drive album, The Breakout.
