Morehouse Bans Cross-Dressing
EDUTAINMENT By David D. on October 18, 2009 at 11:43 amLooks like Kanye’s current mental break won’t include a semester at Morehouse. The private, all-male HBCU has put a ban on its students wearing women’s clothing including high heels, make-up and purses.
I have one pressing question about this whole list: where does tightpants fit into this? (tightpants…fit…pun…hehe. Yeah yeah, I was on my way out anyway) I mean, I’m going to let purses and makeup finish, but tightpants are the most ambiguously gay clothing of all times. Honestly, this is all moot if guys are still going to be allowed to rock denim plumsmugglers.
While reading this story, I couldn’t help but notice a few details that I just have to share.
Before the school released the policy, [Morehouse Vice President Dr. William] Bynum said, he met with Morehouse Safe Space, the campus’ gay organization. “We talked about it and then they took a vote,” he said. “Of the 27 people in the room, only three were against it.”
*Raises hand*
I’m sorry. I don’t mean to nitpick, but twenty-seven people were in that room? There must have been an episode of America’s Next Top Model that night because twenty-seven seems kind of light. Methinks a few Morehomies aren’t being up front.
“We are talking about five students who are living a gay lifestyle that is leading them to dress a way we do not expect in Morehouse men,” he said.
Well, it’s good to know that Pretty Ricky done grow’ed up and went to college. Clap for’em.
Finally…
“The policy is just saying that you have to show more respect in how you dress and there are things that are just not acceptable at Morehouse,” Titus said. “We have a legacy that we are trying to uphold.”
Can we say day late and dollar short? Morehouse has had a certain stigma as being a sanctum for down-low brothers. Whether that’s deserved or not is not for me to say. But it does seem like this ruling will only draw attention to that stereotype and be rather counter-productive for the school.
My bad, I just got serious for a second. Should have used that space for some more gay jokes.
So, Elton John walks into a bar…

Man my best friend (who is gay) gave me the inside scoop about how “tangy” Ns are these days at these HBCUs! Just because you took Quincy’s pocketbook, heels and clothes away doesn’t mean he still isn’t probably engaging in some homoerotic behavior!
Reminds me of the no Hats in the club rule.. Just because I take this hat off and left it in the car to enter your establishment doesn’t mean I also took my “thug” off along with it…
smh…the clothes don’t make “the man” so to speak.
“I ain’t touching that with a 10 ft. pole” rule coming into play lol?
I’ll speak on it.
I agree.
Private school = their own rules & affiliations = deal with it or dip on out.
smh…the clothes don’t make “the man” so to speak.

Yeah but if your goal is to breed businessmen & leaders, shouldn’t those individuals dress like men, at least to a certain degree?
I’m not ascribing to wearing a suit, shirt & tie, but at least wear clothes purchased in the men’s dept.
but it won’t stop teh gheys from playing the tambourine in their little marching band

Man, that’s sad. Moorehouse *is* supposed to the be THE school for Black men. This is a terrible bad look.
Tommy’s gay lol?
Nah, I get it & I’m not saying you can’t have your lifestyle. Hell, I have a profession that doesn’t neccessarily coincide w/running this site. Therefore, I keep them separate.
Plus, most private colleges have some sort of affiliation, usually religious, & a code of conduct that it expects students to adhere to. That’s what it is.
Tommy’s gay lol?

As a Morehouse student(yeah I said it), I am relatively indifferent to the policy. I’m straight, but asking them to put the heels away isn’t going to change their behavior.
^
my thoughts exactly
I wouldn’t imagine that the Institute is attempting to change the behavior (well maybe not collectively) as it is more an attempt to maintain decorum.
You can’t change whether someone is gay by banning clothes just as you can’t make change someone from being gay by banning marriage. But you have an institution that is wanting project a specific message with their student body, and they should have the freedom the do what they need to project that message in perpetuity. IMO
Tommy’s gay lol?

rofl….this probably has more to do with the idea that gay black men are extra flamboyant, especially when they run in large groups at these HBCU’s.
They don’t want society to stunt their level of success. It’s hard enough as is, why build an extra wall to climb
Nah, i was just joshin about Tommy. If you wonder who I read a lot of days, it’s these two.
They are a private institution, so they have a right to do this, but I personally believe it’s wrong.
^ why’s that sir?
Is asking these dudes to put on a pair of pants and take the switch out they walk THAT bad?
Bottomline, some people (…females too, regrettably) need to understand that everybody don’t look good in a skirt.
BTW, in this day and age, I gotta say–anybody attending an all-male college instead of a co-ed place, is either gay, or in the closet with the light on.
While I don’t think it’s necc right, I think they’re well within their right to try & preserve what’s left of their image. But the school has long been a beacon for black male gays for years now.
And let’s just go ahead & say it: there’s been many intelligent black males who were also gay dating back to the Harlem Renaissance. I don’t think there’s an effort to deny their existence here. It’s more of a move to say “it’s cool fellas. But in order to be taken seriously, try dressing professionally. That’s very logical.
I dont understand why people keep saying they’ll still be gay, like theyre trying to change em or something
“BTW, in this day and age, I gotta say–anybody attending an all-male college instead of a co-ed place, is either gay, or in the closet with the light on.”
Spelman is an all-female school
Clark Atlanta is 90% female.
Both of these schools are walking distance from Morehouse. Shut the hell up.

I love my fitted hats..
Don’t mean i’m gonna rock one in an interview for a job.. You have to blend in with your surroundings professionally if you’re gonna succeed.. How am i gonna talk to you about distributing my product while you’re a dude wearing a dress?
Not happening.
It ain’t got nothing to do with gay, it has everything to do with being unprofessional..
hahaa you can come here for gay sex, just don’t dress too crazy!
Its sad that they would even have to make a rule about this. If that’s your thing ok, but like others have said no job would ever put up with that mess
As a former CAU’er, I find this to be hilarious….
If I were still in school, all I’d say would be, “Do WHAT’CHALIKE.. more (females) for me!!!”
I was raised in Atlanta and trust me that shit is not going away…I really don’t knock someone’s “sexual hustle” but it seems like all the men are in love with each other at Morehouse and all the women are locking lips at Spellman…but it’s Atlanta…
YO, James Baldwin? Gay. Flamboyant gay. Langston Hughes? Gay. Everyone knew it. Nobody took them less seriously. Oh yea, they also didn’t rock BCBG pumps down the streets of Harlem
As a Morehouse alum, I’m happy about this. The policy is long overdue. What cats do in their dorm rooms is none of my concern, but bringing Project Runway to the school was a bit… um, flamboyant.
The whole purpose of an all-male or female school is to increase focus. Men dressing like women is in direct violation of the concept, because it lets gay students basically date on campus, and do it out loud. A serious glitch in the matrix.
BTW, I’ll never understand why gay dudes dress like women. If you’re gay, it just seems to cancel itself out.
Most gay guys don’t dress like women so I am not sure what they are trying to accomplish here other than looking extremely homophobic. If they are trying to foster a professional atmosphere than why not say “no fitteds” to everyone or ban all footwear except dresss shoes on campus and see how people flip over an other-wise arbitrary 24-hr dress code.
I heard about this the other night, but leave it to David D. for the REAL breakdown lol. Hell yeah, Morehouse was right for passing this. At the end of the day, the institution has to protect its image. I don’t know any college which wants a image of all its men dressing as women.
On another note, catch me at Hampton U’s homecoming this weekend!!! Damn, this is going to be my second H.C. as an alum. I’m getting old too quick…
1. Finally. A HBCU gets something right. Now if they just stop re-hiring the same embezzlers that got fired from the last school over and over again..for decades on end. (No, I’m not kidding. This is really happening)
2. We should enact this ban in every situation. This circus has gone too far.
3. If you best friend is gay, guess what? So are you. You just need to come to terms. lol
4. Now if we can stop a certain “homegrown site” from posting videos every other week of college orgies and underclassmen givin’ head to fat “career seniors” all would be well in the world of HBCUs…smh.
3. If you best friend is gay, guess what? So are you. You just need to come to terms. lol

F*ck you lmao. Nahhh, but for real, it’s disgusting to say the least. It’s embarrassing as hell man, especially when you see ‘em with letters on.
i still got love for my alma mater. dress codes apply in the real world…like it or not.
as for the gay jokes about cats that go to morehouse….eh, i’ve heard ‘em all before. their are gay folks everywhere…even in your family. deal with it.
Let’s see here:
1) I attended Morehouse briefly (four semesters)
2) I cross-dress
2a) I didn’t cross-dress while at Morehouse
3) I’m heterosexual
3a) This isn’t up for dispute; what I wear has no bearing on who I want in my bed
4) If I did cross-dress while enrolled at Morehouse, and this policy was put into effect, I would have had no problem adhering to it.
5) I still hope I run across an amount of money that could allow me to return there and get a degree from there.
5a) I wouldn’t cross-dress while doing so.
The guy in the photo, Derek J, was in Chris Rock’s movie, Good Hair, and is apparently a popular hairdresser in Atlanta. Having his photo in this article made it appear that he was one of the Morehouse cross-dressing students.
I am a current student of Morehouse. When I saw this post I had to laugh because I didn’t realize that the issue had drawn so much attention. When I first heard of the so called dress code, I brushed off the issue like yeah yeah if it is one of those f*** it days you will still catch me in class with b-ball shorts & my house shoes. Yet as a member of certain news organizations on campus and in the AUC I was forced to face the issue. After hearing both sides of the argument here is what I can say. Everyone is missing the fact that cross dressing is just one facet of the dress code. The dress code includes no sagging pants, hats inside, pjs etc. When the idea was first being tossed around it was said that the administration was going to add that we had to be in Khakis and polos if not suits monday through friday. This is just a simple attempt to up hold the standards of Morehouse. When you enter this institution as a man of Morehouse you know why you have chosen this school and the ideals that come with it. We are a top ranking HBCU that is taken very seriously by other predominantly white ivy league schools and fortune 500 companies. In addition we have produced some of the leading black male leaders of many decades. So in order to keep such a legacy alive, it is a must that this dress code is put in place, because honestly things are getting way out of hand. The cross dressing is right in line with sagging pants. How does it look when recruiters or even our own alumni come on campus and see the stereotypical thug or drag queen? You wouldn’t take us serious.
Btw make all the guy jokes you want, but if you really look at the facts for a straight male Morehouse/the AUC is a pretty good deal. Just incase that went over your head ill break it down for you:
3 schools (5 if you include ITC & Morris Brown) all next door to each other
Spelman is an all girls school
Clark is about 80% plus female population
Take away the gay population of Morehouse (about 30%)
You end up with about a good 7 to 1 female to male ratio
I can’t speak for everyone else but I know I’ve had some GREAT nights lol

*grabs mic & taps.. Is this thing on*
Excuse me can I have ya attention…
@anne
yes the pix on this post is not a morehouse student he’s a paid hair stylist in atl and can dress how the fuk he wants, I’m so glad u realized he’s not a MHC student.
@teef
fuk u! u don’t know me son!
@various comments
I don’t know why u guys don’t act like you don’t know any glbt peeps some of your friends are glbt. One of my best friend is glbt and they are kool as fuk.
I went to CAU and Morehouse use to have an Image to uphold but some where down the line it got lost. I commenf MHC for trying to uphold the Morehouse man back to standards, you don’t see Ivy League students sagging and cross dressing. Image is everything.
*drops mic steps off stage*
People who cling to their delusions find it difficult, if not impossible, to learn anything worth learning.

i would like to address all those opposing of our, morehouse college, new policy because it is “discriminatory against gays and transgendered students” but the reality is these students who identify with these positions, addressing the students that solely identify as homosexual or “feminine” as stated above, these students are all male and identify as such, there is no discrimination against these students because they are gay so lets stop saying that because it does become a greater issue from that false perspective; your clothing does not determine nor define your orientation, if you are gay are you gay because you put on womens clothing? thats a false identity if that is the case, there is no perscriptive diagnosis provided to the college stating these students will not be able to produce or become a great leader, as morehouse is known to produce, on the basis they are uncomfortable in clothing for males.also knowing the history of the college and its mission is important, a lot of these brothers come to morehouse for ATLANTA and not the rich tradition and nurturing provided at morehouse so it becomes blurry when they become engulfed in the sub-cultures of the city and transcend them into the culture of the campus. transgender students alike are responsible for knowing the institution they have chosen, there is no animosity towards any or none of my brothers alike; i have love for everyone, and in that i feel it is more important to figure out honestly if morehouse is the best choice, being an all male historic institution, rich and set in its own culture and development and leadership building skills for men, if identifying as transgender prohibits any of those, especially when it deals with changing the school for case by case accommodations; we have to really think rationally before we go head into situations, i know morehouse, i am morehouse, sexual orientation is not a determinant of that, what i produce is the etermining factor of that. remember, clothing plays a very important role in societies perception of your reality, not to say it is correct to judge but it happens, we all make judgments of others based on our perception of what we see as reality; if i see a male walking around in a dress or even sagging pants for that matter and i am an employer, my perception of their reality becomes such: the boy with the baggy pants as well as the boy in drag are not ready to assimilate and adhere to the rules set by the very systematic institutions in which we hope to one day subscribe, a dress to wall street? yeah right, saggy pants to b of a? year right! and its not to slight anyone, its morehouse college, an institution full of amazing leaders and as an all black male college we set the standard for what a black male is, not that we asked for the role but the world looks to morehouse college, we cant be lazy, sloppy or confused, we dont have time to be anything but great, if you are set on the road to become the next top cross dresser than you have chosen the wrong institution, cross dressing is only going to slow your process, not serve as a catalyst for your achievements

SPEAK ON IT!!!!
As a female graduate of a private, coed institution AND a former transient (summer) student of a public HBCU, I can vouch for the difference of approach. When you enter a PRIVATE institution, as long as it’s accredited, you agree to submit to THAT PRIVATE institution’s MEANS towards what they view as a prominant, professional END.
This is not to say that private is ‘better’ than public, or that, in every situation, a prospective student MUST feel that certain means justify the end. Rather, I am saying that if YOU, as the student, agree with Morehouse’s (or any private HBCU’s) purpose (which is, after all, to prepare the WHOLE student for the work world), then YOU, as a student, by contract & by definition, agree to that institution’s means (in ADDITION to the education). In other words, by attending a private institution, you give up a few certain rights & privileges afforded to you as a legal adult in the USA–for the purpose of their strategy.
If, on the other hand, one feels that limiting his style of dress in relation to gender association (as there IS such a thing as “business dress for women” and “business dress for men”), and he still wants to submit to the nurturing style of character development characteristic of HBCUs, then he should attend a reputable PUBLIC HBCU. A PUBLIC institution DOES have the legal obligation not to limit ANY aspect of one’s freedom of speech or other means of self-expression. The definition of a public HBCU includes the aim of whole character development through other means (in addition to the education) than those of a private school.
