I first heard of LeBron James upon returning home from my freshman year of college. My uncles raved about this freshman from Akron that they’d seen playing in the state playoffs & that he was going to be a problem. I shrugged it off, every year I’d hear of somebody that was the “next” one, only to see their aspirations derailed in one way or another. Over the next few years his name and the spotlight around him only grew larger and larger, as the media kept fueling into the hype about him.
Next thing you know he’s on the cover of SLAM as a junior and (unsuccessfully) trying enter the NBA draft. Then he was catching flack over Hummers and throwbacks. By then it was a foregone conclusion he was NBA bound and the sky was the limit for him. While I won’t root for him with the fervor I did for Jordan, I am proud of the fact that he lived up to the hype and expectations that loomed over his head while in high school. Because for every LeBron James, there’s an Arthur Agee or William Gates.
More Than A Game is already a success, because LeBron James is a success. I’m looking forward to catch glimpses of LeBron for the short time basketball was just a game for him.
