Your Daily Funk – The Nas’ Birthday Edition
GENERAL By Jason H. on September 14, 2009 at 10:27 pmIn honor of Nas’ Born Day today, I’m using him as an excuse to post a few of my favorite samples. I decided to steer clear of the seven second loops. Instead, I picked the joints you can let ride in your speakers, the ones that can stand alone without the stamp of being “sampled.”
By the way if you care, Nas turns 36 today.
Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack “Born To Love” used for Nas’ “2nd Childhood” — Yes, this is the same Peabo who gained immortality on cartoon soundtracks.
The Gap Band’s “Yearning For Your Love” used for Nas & AZ’s “Life’s A Bitch” — Nas and AZ’s inaugural duet showcases the yin and yang of their talents. Charlie Wilson must be proud.
Stacy Lattisaw’s “Let Me Be Your Angel” used for Nas’ “Stillmatic (Intro)” — When I first used to hear Nas say “Stacy Lattisaw tapes” (i.e. “Doo Rags”) multiple times and had no idea what he meant. After discovering who I speculate is a young Marsha Ambrosius, I get why Nasir was such a fan.
Glen Jones’ “Show Me” used for AZ’s “How Ya Livin’” featuring Nasir — An 80’s track that became a 90’s summer anthem for me, I’ll pick the latter on this one.
Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” used for Nas “It Ain’t Hard To Tell” — Unthinkable at the time, sampling MJ assisted in making Illmatic an instant classic.
Minnie Ripperton’s “Here We Go” used for AZ’s “Gimmie Yours” featuring Nas — It’s Minnie so you know you can’t go wrong. From the intro the joint is heat regardless if it was sampled.
Bonus – This wasn’t as a sample but a track I always loved…
Nas “Life We Chose” + MF Doom “Arrow Root” = Nastrodoomus “Life” — “Life” dropped way back in ‘03, but it’s is my personal favorite “unofficial” Nas cut to date.

thanks Gotty. a good surprise while I’m hoping the Chargers bulk up my fantasy football points.
I love diggin Nas samples. He is an educated man when it comes to music. Even if he isn’t making the beats he knows the samples and raps about em and he knows his history, Nas is that dude.
Nasir from Doo Rags
“Pushing drop-tops, Stacey Latissaw tapes. The 80’s had us all apes; youngest gorillas up to bat at home plate.// That was an uncanny era, guns in my pants, yeah X-clan hair, with dreads at the top of my fade.//”
or something to that effect.
I’m pretty sure he’s sampled her several times, but i’ll have to check.

They have one on 96.3 WHRU, but the joint ends at midnight from what the DJ is saying. I think he said it starts at 7:30PM?! That’s pretty early.

Gimme Yours has been one of my favorite AZ/Nas records for awhile.
Since we’re talking about samples what about Nas and Kool G Rap’s Fast Life:

sampled “Happy” from Surface:

Nas and Kool G Rap went INNNNN on this song but it always gets glossed over for some reason.
Lost Tapes had some great samples
Of course most people know the Barry White sample for No idea’s original, I wasnt gonna try to find it but the shit is just too menacing.

Then for “Christ the Redemeer” to be used for Drunk by Myself… the titles in contrast themselves make it amazing.
