Last Call

It’s the last dance of the night, TSS. This is the song.

Electric Light Orchestra is that group of soulful white dudes that give Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers a run for their money. Rarely referenced but often played, ELO is on in the background at your neighborhood bar. You tip the bottom up on a bottle of High Life or a jar of sangria and feel good about the night, and before the days of Shazam you’d say “I love this song! What is this?” It’s “Strange Magic” and it’s the audio manifestation of a great fucking moment captured before a transition. A whole chorale of synth and strings lining the white boarder of a Polaroid of you and your closest of kin on a late summer night.

And if I could do prom all over again, this is the song I’d end the night on.

If I could do it all over, I would have never gone with my weed dealer or let him pick me up in his Camero. I would have never worn that purple nightmare of a dress or dyed my hair red or stood for LSG’s “My Body All Over Your Body” as the song of the night. The defining moment. The one ballad I got up and twirled my purple tulle nightmare to, with the man-boy who sold me eighths on Wednesdays.

I would have taken TSS. A few years and eleven million visits together and here we are; swapping shots from a flask on the dance floor, laughing about joining The Drinking Section.

And this is the song. The Polaroid of the great fucking moment. The nightcap.

We all know things can’t stay as they are. We have to move onward and upward. In the words of ELO, it’s never gonna be the same again. So savor the night and moment.

Things will be much different tomorrow.

Goodnight, TSS.
