The beauty of sports is that they often force folks to confront racial, social and economic issues head-on. An unmatched presence worldwide, Soccer is one sport where the conversations in these areas are ever-present.
Mario Balotelli, by most people’s assumption, would be a fair-skinned Italian. Born Mario Hurwa, he’s actually a black Ghanian whose parents immigrated to Italy and gave him up to an Italian family. At 19 and already a starter every now and then for one of Europe’s premier clubs, Internazionale, he’s the brightest talent Italy has to offer in his age group. Strong, lightning-quick and standing at 6’2,” he’s a physical force to be reckoned with.
Last weekend, with Inter embarrassingly down a goal to Cagliari, manager Jose Mourinho threw in Balotelli at half-time to add a third forward to a formation already including Samuel Eto’o and Diego Milito. Though he didn’t score, he was certainly disruptive upfront as Inter reversed the advantage in their favor after the substitution to win 2-1.
However, racist chanting by the Cagliari fans against Balotelli marred the win—it wasn’t the first time he’d dealt with similar treatment. Last year, playing away in Turin against Juventus, opposing supporters jeered at him, “A black Italian does not exist.”

Admittedly, a black man of Italian birth might be extremely rare but regardless, the actions by those in Turin and Cagliari were categorically wrong. Having never been to Italy, I’m not sure how racist it still is there, if it is at all. But in my decade and a half spent playing club soccer on an almost all-black soccer team; choice, brawl-inducing language was usually spewed in our direction when we encountered predominantly Italian teams. And I did see True Romance—though I realize there is a distinction between Sicilians and Italians.
The racism Balotelli encounters is telling in that it may alter his decision as to whether to represent the Italian national team when the time comes to play for them or Ghana. Already an Under-21 international, he notably appeared in the European Championships for the junior squad, scoring a critical goal for Italy against Sweden. Thirteen minutes later, Mario lost his temper and got a red card, showing the characteristic immaturity that has plagued him up to this point.
Hopefully, he can let his talent alone speak for him, as a level head is crucial for the treatment he’s bound to continue getting from fans. If he can indeed do so, then a summer in South Africa playing in the World Cup may await the striker. The Azzuri is in desperate need of goal production from their forward line and Balotelli could very well be the answer.
At that point, the entire hopes of a nation will rest on his shoulders. Those fans cursing the color of his skin could very well be forced to support his cause, therein sweeping aside any racist feeling they may harbor, temporarily. Permanence, however, is preferred.

how come no one told me eto’o was traded to inter.
shame be cast on espn!
good article. Balotelli is in a tricky situation. this dude has just got to keep focused and work on his talent, and he will have a long successful career. Racism or none.
Good write up. Keep comin’ with the futbol.
Ray Benzino just saw the title and cried. lol
Italy is one of the most racist countries in the world…FACT…and the average italian is an uneducated caveman whos still stuck in the fascism years…and having a government that legitimates racism and intollerance isn’t of any help…Italy is turning into hitler’s germany…and i ain’t joking….i know what’s happening down there
Italy has some serious racism, straight up, but then again so does a lot of countries around the world.
The black Italian Ticallian Stallion does exist, but shame on his parents for switching up his surname to sound more Italian.
@Devin, I thought you would have done a write up on the Manchester Darby, this Sunday gone by. That was one of the greatest games of football, ever! :)
FORZA NERAZZURRI!
Ray Benzino just saw the title and cried. lol
====================================================
LOL
@ Paw
I actually missed the game hence the no write-up. (watched the torrent on monday) and yes, it was easily one of the greatest matches ever. it’s quite tragic that I didn’t get to see it live actually, especially since I had fools texting me up-to-the-minute about it and hence ruined it for me.
LOL@ the Benzino comment
That Benzino comment is chainless (ie: without one)!
Fun fact: the mayor of Rome is a ‘former’ Fascist.
Pau Gasol says Spain is worse
@Devin, in which case, let’s give em the juicy highlights! :)

The Pope is a former Nazi trooper.
Clay Davis was mad racist in 25th Hour, he called Ed Norton a vanilla motherfucker.
But Ed Norton was racist in American History X, but then he reformed himself and became non racist.
Also if you live on Lakeview Terrace, then you better bring him a Royale With Cheese. If he asks, how do you take it? You reply, lot’s of cream, lots of sugar.
There is also a black Russian footballer, Robson, anybody remember him?
When Leslie Nielsen asked for a black Russian in Police Story, they should have delivered him Robson!
Police Story? Cot Dang Jackie Chan, I meant to say Police Squad and that’s word to L.O.D. like my mens 50 Grand and Keith Murray!
Based on my travels, racism (or skin color based bigotry) is not as global as ethnic-based bigotry. Italy’s got its issues. Northern Italians mostly hate southern Italians and Sicilians as historically most Sicilians had African/Arab Moorish roots and tended to be darker and thought to be more “tribal” (animal-like) as a result.
People hate Jews pretty much everywhere. People much hate Africans just about everywhere. The darker and more ethnic you are, the more enemies you tend to have for no good reason at all.
Then you gotta consider Soccer–it’s a nationalistic sport. people rally by national tribe. You’re gonna hate the other team just cuz they ain’t from your country. it’s like hating BoSox and Yankees here.
And trust me. y’all wanna talk bigotry? Go to a soccer match with a bunch of drunk Irishmen… I’ve done it. Didn’t think my black butt was gonna make it out alive. Won’t ever do that again.
black canceco- um are you saying that because Sicilians are mixed with
arab/african descent it makes them animal like? wow homey you fail.
i have been to 24 countries in the past 13 years and i can tell you that you off the mark with your comment. black african americans are the driving force behind 90% of youth culture in the world. and im a black kid from ohio that comes from a looong line of “ninjas” an i gets it in globally – business and pleasure.
While I run the risk of stereotyping here…I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that racism is still very evident in Spain and Italy. It really is sad to see how prevalent it is over there.
Living here in Italy for three years I would say it’s hit or miss depending on what city your in and if the Italians perceive you as an African immigrant or Black American.
In Rome or Florence it’s all gravy. Others spots like Milan or smaller villages and towns, you’ll probably get the stank look from everyone you encounter, as if there questioning how you have the nerve to breath the same air they’re breathing. It’s not overtly racist, but enough for you to notice. It stems from mass African immigration in the past few decades and the xenophobia that comes with it.
On the flip side when I start speaking english in an American accent and whip out a stack of euro to buy a bottle of wine, the racism more or less goes away. But they aren’t that fond of Americans either so you lose either way.
I agree with Si_614 that black culture is popular abroad, but don’t be fooled they will separate the music, the fashion, the attitude, etc. from our black asses in a heart beat. To them, rap music doesn’t mean black necessarily.
Yes – Italy is rather high on the racism marks, but Spain usually takes the marks for the gorilla chants. Part of the issue is because those countries don’t have citizens that are of African descent. As tolerance is a rather gradual process.
The problem with Balotelli playing for Ghana is that he would succumb the ACN (Africa Cup of Nations) which is almost always n the middle of the season.
I think he will stick it out on the Italian team but its not going to be an easy road.
I hope he decides to play for Ghana.
No Black Man should ever give up their identity to appease or convert to being a European. Stay Black.
Italy , bunch of fascists, racists who invaded Ethiopia originally in 1896 but were crushed at the Battle of Adwa. Invaded again in WWII with Mussolini killing many Ethiopians. And don’t get me started on Spain, Germany and the rest of them.
There is definitely racism in Italy but it is different from place to place. For instance in the Emilia region there is a ton of African immigration, and they tend to be left wing in those parts. If were to make a racism table the Italians wouldn’t do that bad: 1) Russians, 2) Spanish, 3) Argentinians (+other Sud Americanos) 4)Italians. All that said I hope Balotteli makes it into the Italian National team.
To commentators (ignorantly) accusing Balotelli of being forced to change his name or being a sell out, dude was adopted and he loves the parents who raised him so he keeps their name. Can’t hate on that.

To the one who said black Italians don’t exist… I really hope your sister goes out with a Black Dude and your mom leaves your Dad for a Black Dude….
Not that it matters 2 years later… but its Baruwah, not Hurwa

There are also a lot of White Italian that are Mixed with African and Middle Eastern. The only reason why some people have a problem admitting this is because they are Huge RACISTS who can’t stand the idea of People Of Color living in Italy. It’s sad but true. Some people are too ignorant to appreciate their African or Middle Eastern Blood Line. You Can’t Wish Away Black People. All Humanity started in Africa. There are people who are down right jealous of Black People and Other People of Color so they LIE and tell themselves that they are somehow superior to people of color. There are No superior human beings so everyone might as well appreciate each other. No matter what “race” others appear to be…..there will always, Only be a Human Race.
Some White People need to Stop All The Racism. There is No country in Europe that did not participate in the Enslavement and Oppression of People of Color! What type of sick people actually feel good about themselves when they are hurting and oppressing other people? Sounds like a low self-esteem to me. White People, including Italians have Never, Ever been “superior” to any other human beings at any time ever! Basically the idea of European Superiority is Undeserved and Based on Absolutely Nothing! No group of human beings are superior to other human beings at all! There is alot of pressure on people of color (particularly the women) to look like and imitate the white people that Oppressed and Colonized them. It’s not fair to have to be raised in a society that’s standard of success and beauty is based on being White. It’s time for white people to stop the oppression and racism against black people and other people of color before God Decides to Punish them for the evil things their people have done.
