Sprite Green hosted the grand opening of the R.S.V.P. store here in Chicago on Saturday by souping up a rooftop in downtown Chicago and bringing almost the whole G.O.O.D. music label down to perform. So without further adieu…

The Venue: The best compliment I can pay the event was that it never dawned on me to try to get backstage. See I usually go to shows like these and try to finagle my way to the backstage area to get clips for the site. But it never occurred to me to even look because I felt like I was backstage the whole night. The Sprite folks really pimped out a downtown Windy City rooftop with free alcohol and a truly intimate setting despite the large crowd gathered on Michigan Ave. trying to get in.

The Irony: As I said there was an open bar. And not the open bars I’m used to that usually just serve unleaded. This bar had Sprite Green mixed with Belvedere and…Hennessy. Yup, free Hennessy at a G.O.O.D. music event. Though Kanye wasn’t there, the jokes were in full effect.

News Flash: Common runs Chicago

Despite all I’ve said about Lonnie recently, I’m still a Common fan and I (along with the rest of the audience) went absolutely ham sammich bologna meat when he hit the stage during “Make Her Say.” He went on to rock a couple of more songs and the crowd ate it up. No matter how famous Common has gotten, he still has the full support of the hometown.

The “I’mma Let You Finish” Award for Bad Form On Stage: This one goes to one Mr. Hudson who completely botched his performance with Big Sean.

Sean was debuting his new single featuring Hudson and you can tell Sean was excited. But Mr. Hudson (who later said that Sprite Green was “coming to a 7-11 near you”) had no clue what was going on. I’m not one to speculate, but the aforementioned Henn may have played a part. I just felt bad for Big Sean, as you can tell he was a little disappointed in yet another let down during his G.O.O.D. run.

News Flash 2: Kid CuDi is a certified star

Although Common came on and did his set in the middle of CuDi’s, Mr. Solo Dolo was able to keep the momentum going. He carried on a full performance and looked like the legitimate top guy on stage. His energy for the extended set of “Day N’ Nite” was off the charts and he had the crowd throughout. He said “Pursuit Of Happiness” is his next single and judging by the crowd’s reaction, it’s going to be a beast of a track.

We Could Have Used Some More: GLC

Dude has some great songs under his belt and the crowd vibed to his whole “set.” I put that in quotations because he only performed two songs and didn’t do my personal fave “Swerve and Lean.” He killed his two songs and things are only going up for him. Plus, we chatted for a second and he told me he respects the fresh.

Final Verdict

This was the swankest thing I’ve ever been a part of, and this is coming from a man who attended an all-white undergrad. The expensive booze were pouring. The women were a sight to behold. And the music was, well, G.O.O.D. I hear the Sprite Green folks have been putting on events like this around Chicago for a minute now and if they’re anything like this, I’m game for any future concerts.
