Since he had a short discography, I question Big’s rank in the game every now & then. But, when I go back to Ready To Die & listen to how eloquently he floated lines like like “there’s gonna be alotta slow singin-nnn and flowering bringin-nnn, if my burglar alarm starts ringin’…” all my previous skepticism is removed.

Who the fuck is this? Pagin me at 546 in the moooooooooooooooornin
Rasshole
Dude was a great storyteller. This and “Gimme the Loot” are straight movies in song form.
Like Hiphop’s Roberto Clemente. Short but powerful career.
As I get older Biggie gets better with each listen. The ease in which he does his thing is amazing. His wordplay and delivery are effortless. Used to be a skeptic too, but not anymore. Shit, now I’m an advocate.
Roberto Clemente. Interesting.
Me and My Bitch is one of the best hood love stories ever….
and then we lie together, cry together,I swear to God I hope we fuckin die together…….
Suicidal Thoughts—
Made me pray for B.I.G
When I die, fuck it I wanna go to hell
Cause I’m a piece of shit, it ain’t hard to fuckin’ tell
It don’t make sense, goin’ to heaven wit the goodie-goodies
Dressed in white, I like black Tims and black hoodies
God will probably have me on some real strict shit
No sleepin’ all day, no gettin my dick licked
Hangin’ with the goodie-goodies loungin’ in paradise
Fuck that shit, I wanna tote guns and shoot dice.
WoW!
Dude was the Martin Scorsese of this rap shit.
this is the epitome of loving hip hop music. be it big or pac or jay or em or snoop or ANYONE that you feel touched your hip hop soul in a special way when you hear it.
when you hear something from your youth that just makes you feel good about what you are hearing and remember the memories when you first heard that record.
damn good choice for the ipod shuffle
^^^
It wasn’t a choice. It’s a shuffle!
this song is perfection – everything about it. the beat, his flow, lyrics, delivery, everything.
I say Roberto Clemente because first he was no question at the top of the game when he passed and its easy to project their greatness even when his contemporary’s continued to elevate the game. His body of work appears timeless and his impact continues to be felt because his understudys (Jay-Z/Latin Players(Pujols)) only really exist as they do because they never got the chance to realize their full potential. Would Jay-Z or Pujols be who they are if either Big or Clemente had full careers? or would Big and Clemente have set the bar so high that Jays or Alberts accomplishments been just been rated good instead of GOAT?
Yeah, I couldn’t necessarily call him Roberto Clemente seeing as how Clemente had a great career. He did have 3,000 hits. Lol, that doesn’t come through a short career.
However, I understand the comparison. They both passed during a high (successful) parts of their careers.
As far as B.I.G. storytelling tracks go, don’t forget “Niggas Bleed” and “I Gotta Story To Tell.” If nothing else, dude had a way of making a movie out of a track.
Funny. I wrote mentioned this song in the sequel to that story about Nina…
J, Hiphop years are like dog years so I think they project well.
That’s my ringtone.
Hell yes, every now and then I consider rotating Big out of my “top 5 MCs” list in favor of someone with a longer discog or more relevant to the game now but when I take another listen… nah.
OK.. If Biggie is the Roberto Clemente of rap.. (I love that analogy because its a very correct assessment)
Who is the Babe Ruth?
…. Jackie Robinson?
…. Satchel Paige?
…. Pete Rose?
I will toss out the easy and obvious LL = Lou Gehrig
In my books Ready to Die is the only official album that Biggie Smalls recorded.
Baseball isn’t my forte, however, movies are.
Therefore, I would say that Biggie Smalls is the Charles Laughton of the rap world.
Biggie recorded one album of great impact and Charles Laughton directed one movie of great impact.
Both men were of a similar size and shape also.
Jay is the Ridley Scott of the rap world and Scarface is the Sergio Leone of the rap world.
Kanye West is the Michael Bay of the rap world.
I wasn’t questioning the Clemente comparison. I think it’s accurate. I was trying to think of an athlete or entertainer who died an untimely death @ their peak so it fits. I was also thinking of your Sam Cooke’s & a few others who died of plane crashes.
Ever noticed that even on his most menacing songs, Big still sounded effortless?
Nas would be Scorcese/Altman?
I can’t even fuck with the baseball shit.
Clemente played for damn near 20 years…
Anyway, there’s nobody thats done more with less time than BIG. Two top notch albums, lyrics for days, pulled off jams for the ladies, the cubs, and the backpackers without compromising..
Gotty, I didn’t take it like that. I just felt the need to continue.
I’d say:
Busta Rhymes = John Smoltz. Great career as a starter(soloist) and closer(who would you have anchor your posse cut?). Came in with a great staff (Native Tongues). Even though he’s had a brilliant career, he doesn’t get the respect of the fans but does from the writers.
Ghostface = (the rap) Derek Jeter – He’s so New York and has in my opinion the most consistent career.
Lil Wayne = ARod – Been in the game forever even though he still appears fresh. It’s the allegations (ghostwriting/steroids) that keep him from true endearment amongst the purists.
I would say BIG is more Gayle Sayers than Roberto Clemente. I know Sayers didn’t die but He only played 5 years before injuries killed career (2 games in each of the last to seasons) . During his five years Sayers was the Best Player in The League (Think Barry Sanders in Reggie Bush’s Body. Sayers made the Hall of Fame playing the least amount of time than any of HOF player
Biggis Smalls is the illest!!! Don’t question his eminence or relevance, that’s fucking blasphemy.
Pete Rose has to be Nas.
Hall of Fame Career but has made some horrible choices, ie not getting a prenup from Kelis; to me that is the equivalent of betting on baseball. Nas gambled and lost. lol
DMX would be Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, all the talent in the world and drugs derailed their careers. Hopefully DMX can fight whatever demons that forced him down that road and get clean again.
I agree with DMX. Even down to the comeback attempts. I’d compair NaS to Bonds because everyone only wants to remember his missteps. The weight of his decisions seem to override the fact that he was a 5 tool player for a long time.
Biggie Small got it first right here !
that was the Big ass chain !!
Notorious B.I.G !!!
BIG=Hendrix of Rap.
And if we’re doing baseball I’d say Pedro Martinez. Best to ever slang it while he did it but injuries/bullets got in the way.
@Deen, NAS would be Oliver Stone, has moments of mindblowing greatness, but also capable of delivering us with sub par material. But we never forget, how awesome they can be when they put their minds to it.
2PAC would be Kevin Costner, because they both always bring the drama.
Dr Dre is James Cameron, because both of them take an absolute age to release something, but when they do, it’s pretty darn mind blowing and always lays down the blueprint for the era ahead of em.
