In Game Informer’s 5,000 person study of console owners, 54.2% of Xbox 360 owners’ systems went under due to the Red Rings of Death or the E74 error.
For those that don’t know, these defects make the machines inoperable. According to the survey results only 10.3% of PS3s and 6.8% of Nintendo Wii’s suffered similar malfunctions that would render them unusable. That’s a pretty disgusting figure for the 360 assuming this survey was done properly. That’s not even the worst part. The same survey revealed that only about 4 percent of those with broken 360′s wouldn’t buy another one.
Only 4%? EXCUSE ME?!?! © Pete Rosenberg and DJ Cipha Sounds.
This does and doesn’t make sense. On one end common sense tells you fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Why buy a product again, in this case a relatively expensive entertainment device, if it broke the first time and has a reputation for not being reliable? It’s like asking to get punched in the right eye when dude already stole on you in your left.
But on the flip side Microsoft’s warranty will repair your system for free up to three years after you bought if it has RROD or E74. In light of this, tons of heads send their assed out system, keep the hard drive and buy an arcade version for $200 or less. Then when their original 360 comes back they’ll flip it on eBay or find some other way to get rid of it. With great titles, expensive peripherals and an optional yearly fee for online gaming cats realize they spent too much dough on their 360 to drop it cold turkey. This means that many are compelled to keep rockin’ till the wheels fall off (i.e. till their three year ride dries up). Fingers have been pointed at MS for rushing the 360 out a year before Sony’s PStriple without properly testing it for problems.
For the record, I’ve owned a 360 for almost two years and I haven’t had any issues. But David D., as well as some of my friends and family, had their 360′s crap out on them. It’s pretty disheartening that consumers will get up in arms about exclusives and other BS but take such a high failure rate lying down. With over 30 million systems sold worldwide this situation really needs some seven on your side-type treatment. Microsoft isn’t being held accountable enough for their follies.
Game Informer: Xbox 360 At 54.2% Failure Rate [Joystiq]

I had 2 Xbox’s crash on me, before I made up my mind.
I’m Rollin wit’ Sony. Expecting a company with PC issues to master console gaming. What was I thinking?
wow,that’s a staggering number!!
I have a 360 Arcade and so far so good but I’m considering a PS3 though as my PS2 is 7 years old and still solid and the prices are more decent than a year ago:)
I have my Original Xbox 360 and it’s holding on but I know at least 15 people that have had to replace theirs
I just jinx myself SMH
It’s the fanboy syndrome. Completely ignore every flaw because your system “doesn’t have any”.
Even when considering 360′s failure rate, it’s still superior to PS3…. games and online-wise
I finally got around to playing Resistance….what a hunk of shit
Too many brand groupies. Only games I fucks with are Madden, Live, MLB, Gran Turismo and GTA, so at that crap-out rate, I see a PS3 in my future.
I have 2 RROD’d Xbox 360s sitting in my room. I plan on beating the both of them with a baseball bat Office Space style.
I had an xbox for a year before it crapped out on me. it wasn’t rrod or any other error, but it wouldn’t read games. I took that shit back to walmart and told them i had gotten it for my birthday and so i didn’t get a gift receipt and they gave me a new one, no questions asked.
I think this is bullshit. I’ve had my 360 for over 3 years now, never had a problem. I know quite a few people who own 360s and none have had the ring of death.
@YE
Then I should’ve bought it from the store yall did.
just got my red ring…
guess the slimps3 is in play now…
My 1st xbox I copped off ebay straight did this. so I sold it. My elite works great tho.Love xbox
how is it only 52%
I am not a gamer so I am reading with the true intent of seeing it from all of your perspectives (truly).
But this statement stood out to me the most:
“Even when considering 360’s failure rate, it’s still superior to PS3…. games and online-wise.”
54.2%? Over half the chance that when you purchase the console it will die and you still would buy it?
Wow.
As said, I am not a gamer so perhaps I simply do not get it… but if someone informed me that I could buy a particular new car or home that had a 54.2% chance of the car’s engine completely dying or the roof caving in on the home… I am probably going to look elsewhere.
That goes for anything really… a new digital camera, television, etc.
54.2% is just far too high when you have a 10.3% alternative readily available.
Sure it may be a Cadillac as opposed to a Mercedes. Or a 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath as opposed to a 5 bedroom 3 bath, but ummm…
MS should be ashamed of that figure.
not a good look for microsoft. especially with the announcement that sony is slashing the price on the ps3
I thought it was more than 50-something percent.
Also, remember, 360 is AMERICAN designed. PS3, JAPANESE designed.
LMAO @ Shail
Just dropped by to say I don’t like Microsoft despite typing this on a laptop w/ Vista. Oh the irony.
Back in the day my PS2 got the DRE after 3 years. DRE was a problem for early PS2′s and you were basically screwed if your one year warranty ran out. I was dumb enough to buy another one but it didn’t have any problems. If I held out a year I would’ve gotten it fixed for free thanks to Sony’s settlement to the DRE class action suit.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6139482.html
Perhaps it’s much harder to take Microsoft to court since, to my knowledge, two attempts at a class action over the 360 failed. But something like this has to happen.
^ Fan boy. LMAO.
^^^ Is the last person who should be calling anyone a fanboy hahaha.
On a completely unrelated note, my old 8-bit NES didn’t stop working until the late 90s. There are plenty of Super NES’ still going strong, and my Gamecube still works as well as it did when I bought it back in ’02.
Microsoft needs to learn from Nintendo when it comes to making consoles, for real.
My kids still play their Super NES……….when Im let them.
i dont see what surprises you about the 4%.
hell, look at all the people that kept buying PS2s.
quick ?….
is it just the Pro that ends up getting messed up time after time again?
or are the Elite SKU’s prone to the malfunctions as well?
@ Random Guy:
Yeah a lot of people forget that the first run of PS2′s were screwed up. I doubt the failure rate was as high as the 360 but it wasn’t anywhere near as good as PS3′s. The bottom line is this; corporations keep getting away with this largely in part of consumers letting them.
@ PSA
Honestly it’s all over the place. It used to affect the launch 360s the most but later revisions still got RROD. If you REALLY want to cop one you might as well get a store warranty or holla at walmart and keep the receipt. MS is phasing out the Pros anyway so you’ll find Elites or Arcades in the stores unless they got leftovers laying around.
Like your page, good reading, thanks.
Nice blog adding this to my twitter now
Great reading, thank you
Remember that “54% of 5000 people experienced a system failure” does not mean “54% failure rate.”
If you assume for a moment that those users may have had *multiple* failures, the rate actually gets *higher*.
;P
The failyre rate is pretty bad for xbox but my take on this is that the console is a good console – all powerful console run hot and issues like that arise. The guy in the following article also talks about failure rate admitted by MS (reportedly)

It is unbelievable! now there is a cool way to fix your RROD I just found out last thursday. Check my link posted. If it does not work try rrod-fix-pro dot com.
I feel a lot more people need to read this, very good info! . . . . . .
