When I woke up today I was only sure of one thing.  Tiger Woods would win the PGA Championship.  Golf ranks behind Basketball, Football, Soccer, Baseball & Hockey (In that order) in regards to watching sports on television and Tiger holding the lead after 3 rounds in a major championship is a akin to a victory lap.  Earl’s boy was 14 out of 14 in his previous major’s when leading going into the final round.  Up two shots to start the day, a funny thing happened on the way to major number 15.

Tiger lost.

By three shots to Y.E. Yang.  First of all, congrats to Y.E., who isn’t ashamed to admit that he played the round of his life.

“It’s not like you’re in an octagon where you’re fighting against Tiger and he’s going to bite you, or swing at you with his 9-iron,” Yang said through an interpreter. “The worst that I could do was just lose to Tiger. So I really had nothing much at stake.”

“This might be my last win as a golfer. But it sure is a great day.”

But the bigger story here is Woods not being able to close the door.  He’s heralded as much (if not more) for his mental acumen and intimidation of his peers, than his skill level.  To lose to a journeyman like Yang is befuddling, but not surprising.  Is Tiger losing his edge?  I doubt it, the worst people to go up against are the one’s who have nothing to lose.  Y.E. definitely fit that criteria.  So Jack’s record is safe a bit longer and Tiger has the motivation to come back next year and wreck havoc on the Tour.

And remember… Yang didn’t win the tournamnet, Tiger lost it.  That’s all we’ll  (Tiger included) will be hearing until next year.
